for music you can get into .MOD files, theres millions online and you can edit them and make your own also. you can also emulate computers like C64 and Amiga for endless fun.
Linux was just being invented when I was in college… But if your profs want certain files traded as MS documents Windows will make your life easier. While docx is opened/saved by LibreOffice etc, there are formatting things that can trip you up like default margins, missing fonts (on either end of use) this means what you send somebody may not open and look as intended (even if the issue is actually on the MS user end). It makes things frustrating unless they only want pdf. Also powerpoints get wonky too.
Turning in a docx is very bad practice. It is best to convert to PDF for both security and compatibility. Docx are never going to render properly in the browser.
Many of the online dropboxes for assignments render docx (and pdf files) and many instructors will want the docx for the metadata display (ie author, time taken to complete assignment, etc).
The metadata is very easy to spoof and it pretty much arbitrary. Docx isn’t a standard format in practice if you are using Word. It is sort of fine with other programs but PDF is best.
Docx is the literal default format for Microsoft Word for almost 20 years now. PDF can be whatever, but if it is not what you were instructed to turn in, thats a failure no matter how close to your original intent it renders.
Maybe that was the case historically but these days I can’t imagine a professor wanting that. It would break all the grading process as docx isn’t supported properly by a lot of the online tools.
Even if they did I imagine the students would create some issues with Macros. You’d end up with documents that are behaving like malware if you open them in desktop. That wouldn’t be a problem with Word online but word online isn’t really usable.
I know I can’t actually help you, but I have to say, I’m excited for you. You sound like you have carefully thought through your ideas, and concluded “I don’t personally have a future in India”. You are in a tough spot financially, but I can tell you have the fire inside you. You’re going to find a better country to live in, and change your circumstances, like so many Indian ex-pats before you! You can do it.
I’ve been using exclusively Linux since high school, and now I’m doing a PhD in math. It’s always been pretty smooth. I used to have a separate Windows rig for gaming, but don’t really need it anymore, now that Proton works very well with most games. (I don’t really play AAA games, so that helps.)
Coming to the point, for academic stuff, I mostly needed to use a PDF reader (Zathura and qPdfView), LaTeX, and some computation and graphing software (mostly SageMath). I sometimes needed to use DOCX files, but LibreOffice works well for that. Most other software I need from time to time are usually Linux native.
Also, many universities provide access to O365. I’ve used it in some rare cases where I needed to provide input in some collaborative document. But in most cases, I was able to convince my friends/colleagues to use Google Docs instead.
Unless you do CAD, or some creative work, Linux should be perfect for your usecase.
I’m surprised you use Google. I would assume people on Linux are avoiding big tech as much as possible. I personally don’t use a Google account so I just use the o365 school account to edit collab documents

America needs Ukraine to buy obsolete weapons now, use them against Russia’s current military capacity so that there’s real-world applications for next generation weapons. Also, all the strategies designed to contain a more militant Russia needed to be gamed out. Ukraine will be paying this war back for generations. Think Haiti’s reparations to France, but with bigger numbers.
A years-long conflict also “softens” Russia up for the next round of sanctions — maybe they’ll be effective this time!

One winter evening I got a notification about possible fraudulent charges on my credit card. I had not in fact gone to Redbox twice that day, so I told them to replace the card. I got home and really had to pee so I beelined it to the bathroom. It occurred to me that it was really cold inside for some reason, and when I got out of the bathroom I noticed the living room window was open. Then I looked around and noticed that on my way to the bathroom I had walked past a bunch of drawers and cabinets that were also open.
Luckily not much of consequence got stolen. Whoever it was probably didn’t have a car because everything that was taken was small. We had a nice TV and my ex had a nice computer that were both still there. On my end, I was missing that credit card (I had accidentally left it on my desk after making an online purchase) and my wedding and engagement rings. But I also once (when smoking one of my beedis like the "boss bitch" I was) saw something in the shadows and legitimately shouted "CREEPER, NO CREEPING!" Thank baby jesus that my buddies were outside with me cause it actually was a real ass creeper slinking around like a mother fucking creeper. And I think if it wasn't those dudes, it most def was that mother fucker. But either way, nasty people can get fucked.
EDIT It suggested “Zoom zoom” on a bicycle accident memorial, which can be seen as insensitive as it could hint at either the cyclist or someone else carelessly “zooming” ahead too fast.
