I didn’t try it myself yet, but judging from his other videos, he’s not a complete idiot, so I assume it’s solid advice.

2 spare drives and a safe deposit box ($10/yr). Swap the bank box once a month or so. My upstream bandwidth isn’t enough to make cloud saves practical, and if anything happens, retrieving the drive is faster than shipping a replacement, nevermind restoring from cloud.

Of course, my system is a few TB, not a few dozen.

zephyr , to youshouldknow in YSK - X percent of Y is equal to Y percent of X. So, if you want to find out what 7% of 50 is, you could instead find out what 50% of 7 is, which is 3.5. This means that 7% of 50 is also equal to 3.5.

Percentage is just a fancy form of decimal point. I just multiply them together then move decimal digit to the left twice.

This is true for quite a few other things as well. For instance, “hertz” really just means “per second”. However, it’s easier to write/type “Hz” instead of “s^-1”.

I’m from the US. While I have travelled to locales where they are commonplace, I never actually tried one. When lockdown and the tp crisis started, however, I purchased one online. I now hate having to use any lavatory that doesn’t have a bidet.

Q - Doesn’t it feel weird? A - No. Some people are worried that it may feel sexual. It doesn’t. It’s just a localized shower on your ass, which is something you hopefully do regularly.

Q - Won’t it just push detritus away from the epicenter and make a mess? A - It can, if the bidet has narrow spray. Mine does this. Just do a quick shimmy that makes the jet draw a decreasing radius spiral.

Q - Doesn’t everything get wet? A - Some bidets have air dryers, but in the absence of, yes. Keep tp in the lav to address this. The quick wipe to address this still saves a ton of tp.

Behind the Bastards, a deep dive into the various shit people of history. Episode one is Saddam Hussein: Erotic Novelist.

There’s nearly 700 episodes, and I’ve yet to run tio a dud. Loads of great guests. My only gripe is that it’s a touch Amerocentric, but other than that I’d recommend it to basically anyone. Not kid friendly, in case that wasn’t obvious.

I think it’s only fair to add that this podcast has a very left leaning bias. I’m not saying that that is bad, just being objective.

Nilz , to selfhosted in Welcome to [email protected] - What do you selfhost?

Hi there. My first post in this community.

I’m currently running:

  • Pi-hole
  • Plex Media Server
  • Grafana
  • Torrent server
  • Monica
  • Shaarli
  • Matrix instance
  • Arch package cache
  • Several game servers such as Minecraft and Terraria
  • VM running Volvo software to troubleshoot my cars.

**My hardware:**I used to run it all on a Supermicro x9drd-7ln4f-jbod with dual Xeon E5-2670 v2 with 16x16GB ECC ram and 6x 3TB disks in raidz2 for storage and 2x 60gb Intel SSDs for OS. I started with less and upgraded towards this configuration but it was consuming 300 watt idle which was just unacceptable.

So earlier this year I upgraded to an ASRock Rack x470D4U with Ryzen 7 5700x and 4x32GB ECC (non-registered) ram and 6x 2TB SSDs in raidz2. 1 ssd is in the nvme slot on the motherboard, 4 are in a 4x4 bifurcation card in the 16x slot and 1 more in a 4x riser. All PCIe lanes of the CPU are used. This setup is not possible with an AMD CPU with integrated GPU since it will take up 4 PCIe lanes (you can guess how I know). It uses about 20 watt idle without any containers and VMs running. I initially didn’t want to move away from Supermicro but the ASRock Rack motherboard has IPMI so I’m not missing out on much.

Hardware and software suggestions are welcome :D

Scored myself a bidet during that TP shortage at the beginning of COVID lockdown and it’s been a game changer. Get one because your butt will especially thank you after a spicy Thai or Indian night. Spicy poo and mud butt? What are those?

I still use TP, but it’s now for drying off.

sombrero , to gaming in PC Games to play in local co-op?

I was a bit confused when you said local co-op. It implies 2 computers on the same local network(connected to the same router, no internet connection required). I think the term you’re looking for is split screen gaming.

When I looked at pictures of Spelunky games like Clonk and Liero popped into mind, I think there are options for split screen multiplayer in those games, they’re old school PvP games.

My friends call that LAN play or LAN co-op. To me, local co-op has always been a more general phrase, covering all of the above.

sphere_au , to technology in Lemmy needs two things to be successful

I think these are “nice to have” features rather than absolutely essential, but:

For 1. I could deal with just being able to download my list of subscriptions and upload it to another server. That’s the only bit that’s really slow to copy over by hand.

For 2. I think the main thing that really would benefit is the ability to search all active communities on all servers. The way it is now is alright if there are only half a dozen really active instances whose communities I might be interested in, but it doesn’t scale if there are hundreds of servers to check out. Probably the more important of the two IMHO in the long run.

Being able to download your own data would be a start

Beehaw admins really seem like a bunch of cocky and snoby people. First the requirements for registration - need to write a short essay why you are worthy of joining the sacred community. Now this, leaving fediverse which looks like trying to separate from cousins living outside of their town. Just defederate and vanish in obsolescence of interwebs.

artillect ,
@artillect@kbin.social avatar

You don't have to write a short essay, I didn't write much more than "I heard about you on reddit and I wanna check it out" and I got accepted

the_itsb ,

That was my answer for why I wanted to join, too! And I answered the “what will you contribute?” one pretty simply too, with the same things I try to bring to any conversation: my knowledge and empathy wherever they can be helpful.

I took the questions as the same kind of very basic filtering that my husband does for his tractor enthusiast Facebook group; he’s not looking for essays, he just wants to know people will actually read (and follow!) the rules and not be jerks.

rknuu ,
@rknuu@beehaw.org avatar
  1. The account registration process exists to weed out bots. We're not the only ones to implement this kind of sign up. An essay really isn't required, unless you misunderstood the purpose of the sign up. We just tied it to understanding what we consider are our rules for our instance.
  2. We haven't left the fediverse, posts and comments to and from beehaw still flow to the vast majority of instances, and we do wish to rejoin these two specific instances at a later date once we have the right processes and tools to work though the problems we encountered.
  3. If the admins were cocky or snobby, they would have defederated without any form of announcement or transparency on what was being done and why.
DaughterOfMars ,
@DaughterOfMars@beehaw.org avatar

Can we please get rid of these people who insist on remaining uninformed and then going out and spreading their ignorance by attacking others? It's contrary to the vision of this instance to allow them to continue this behavior.

rknuu ,
@rknuu@beehaw.org avatar

This is where the fediverse is both powerful and a bit of a challenge to moderate. The best way to deal with these things is to be vigilant in sharing information that supports the contrary; since there's no real way to filter out bad information unilaterally (and even if so, I'd find that to be a dangerous precedence as who constitutes "good" and "bad" across the federated instances).

While the post was quite toxic towards the admins, the opinion of the user was done in what I see as exasperation at the situation without necessarily understanding the logic of these choices made for the beehaw instance as a whole; so there's an opportunity to redirect them to a different path or understanding. I'm aware that there are likely several others who share this opinion and may learn from this (just taking a moment to review some of the kbin.socal and lemmy.world threads on this subject shows this as a common concern). Moderation and intervention is more about systemic patterns of an individual's behavior that clashes with a community's ethos. Following the ethos of our admins, we take a measured response based on history and engagement.

As for now, things appear to have resolved through disengagement, so mission accomplished: we got the information out there and addressed their concern (and possibly inform other lurkers and the various instances that federate with us on this point).

Gaywallet ,
@Gaywallet@beehaw.org avatar

As an fyi, feel free to remove redundant comment threads - if twenty people come in and just post "defederation bad", after a certain point you can clean it up as noise.

ag_roberston_author ,
@ag_roberston_author@beehaw.org avatar

"A short essay" is required? That's a blatant lie.

I wrote "it was on the recommended list at join-lemmy.org" and got accepted.

retronautickz ,

Funny the thing about the whole short essay thing, because I basically only wrote “I wanna try Lemmy and I want an active instance where I can be active in”

Beehaw didn’t left the fediverse, it defederated from two Lemmy instances over the more than 20000 that exist in all the fediverse. The number of instances that Beehaw defederates from (which, of course, is bigger than two, as there are intances that are globally defederated) is tiny in comparison with the size of the whole ActibityPub -based fediverse.

Make sure you understand how the fediverse work before resorting to lying.

Numuruzero ,

I think with the registration questions they’re just trying to solve two things: preventing bots from signing up, and preventing trolls. It doesn’t seem so bad, really.
