FlyingSquid , to news in Haiti: US guns pour into Port-au-Prince, fuelling surge in violence
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

But I keep being told that an armed society is a polite society!

BestBouclettes ,

Mutually assured destruction only works when none of the parties involved are batshit insane

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t think of a real-world example of that.

21Cabbage ,

Hell I’d argue mutually assured destruction drives people batshit insane.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I do not disagree at all.

21Cabbage ,

Still, seems like an improvement on the path humanity was on of having periodic global bloodbaths over individual human egos and the nationalism others attach to it. We still have bloodbaths over those issues, don’t get me wrong, just smaller scale overall.

bhmnscmm ,
@bhmnscmm@lemmy.world avatar

It works until it doesn’t. Then we all face annihilation.

21Cabbage ,

In my opinion the only real move is to hope is things keep spiraling upwards.

ours ,

And nobody please mention Switzerland as an example. Yes, we have lots of guns but they aren’t meant for self-defense outside some very narrow exceptions. Thankfully we can trust our police to do their work and they are usually very well trained.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Too late.

lemmy.world/comment/8873503

Unsurprisingly, he also talked about “gun grabbers” in Switzerland.

SupraMario ,

Considering only the gangs have guns here…not really an armed society is it?

exanime , to news in Boeing: How much trouble is the company in?

Likely not a all… The only chance these behemoth companies get punished is by the public turning on them but they have already insulated themselves from that (most people would not know how to avoid their planes when booking the next vacation on Expedia)

In a properly working environment, even a Capitalist one, the government should intervene, jail the board, and either nationalize it or auction it off for parts… The most important part is really the jailing of the board

Sir_Kevin ,
@Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Boeing and the american government are too deep in bed. Nothing significant will happen. Maybe a few executives get fired just to satisfy the demands for action. In fact the american government will likely bail the company out when things take a dive (their stock as well as their aircraft).

exanime ,

Sadly, I believe you are 100% right

Etterra , to worldnews in Paul Alexander, the polio survivor who spent over 70 years in an Iron Lung, has died at 78

The worst part is that if you’re stuck in that situation and want to get out of it via suicide, you literally can’t. Now he’s finally free.

jose1324 ,

Didn’t he choose this? There are modern replacements for the iron lung, when he was still able enough to get out of it he could’ve switched I think.

Shou ,

He was able to leave the contraption for short periods of time. He was able to breathe on his own, but not well and would become fatigued quickly. He wasn’t as stuck as it seems.

agegamon , to news in Russian opposition leader Navalny has died, prison service says

Putin might as well just say the quiet part out loud at this point. Classic sociopath dictator, gotta pretend blood isn’t on his hands.

Rest in peace Navalny. You and your people deserve better than this.

jarfil ,

Part of the strategy of a terror state, is to have people fill in the blanks themselves. That way they can never know whether “let’s have some tea”, “let’s go for a walk”, or “have you looked out the window” are actual death threats or not, keeping everyone in a constant state of paranoia, that makes them try extra hard to not displease the dictator.

Ostrichgrif , to news in Jewish students sue Harvard over 'rampant' anti-semitism

“It comes just over a week after its president, Claudine Gay, resigned in part over her handling of antisemitism.”

Is this just blatant misinformation or am I out of the loop? I was under the impression that she resigned over plagiarism while some people online criticized her for “antisemitism”. I haven’t read anything about antisemitism being a primary cause from any publication but this one.

Sami_Uso ,

As with anything you read about Israel, the facts are always distorted just slightly enough to completely change the message without flat out lying. It’s not just you, there’s a major funk around any Israel based news stories coming out of the mainstream media.

KinNectar , to world in Amazon drought: 'We've never seen anything like this'
@KinNectar@kbin.run avatar

The Amazon is a planted forest, it is looking more and more like it will need aggressive planting to keep it healthy. We should support the indigenous Amazonian in this work for all our sake.

ripcord , (edited )
@ripcord@kbin.social avatar

There's lots of evidence of domestication, cultivation, tending over the last 13,000+ years. But calling it a "planted forest" - like as if the majority of plants out in the Amazon were seeded/planted manually by humans - seems like a huge stretch.

burgersc12 ,

According to this paper, about 1/5 by people

ripcord ,
@ripcord@kbin.social avatar

Ok, but that's still really far off from being a "planted forest".

Fermion , (edited )

Other countries should also be looking at adding forest area and wetlands in a strategic fashion to improve freshwater retention. Deforesting clearly changes local climates. So we should be able to do the reverse as well.

Historical accounts make it sound like the vast majority of land east of the Mississippi in the US used to be old growth forest. Between the chestnut blight and over 200 years of logging, most of the old growth forest is gone.

India has had some notable successes with a grassroots movement to get rural communities to do small earthworks projects to colllect water during the rainy season and let it seep into the ground. They have demonstrated a notable reduction in crop failures during the dry season resulting from the community action.

kaibae , to news in Russia bans anti-war candidate from challenging Putin

Ah yes, “elections” in Russia for “president.” Coming soon to the US if Republicans get their way.

Gamers_Mate , to news in London Gaza rally: Rishi Sunak vows to hold Met chief 'accountable' over march

The prime minister has criticised the timing of the demonstration in London as “provocative and disrespectful”. If he thinks Protesting for a cease fire on Armistice day is disrespectful. Wait till he finds out what Armistice means.

rynzcycle , to news in Wagner boss Prigozhin killed in plane crash in Russia

Ok, I'll do it...
He's alive and well and this is a bit of theatre agreed upon between Putler and him to save face in all directions.*

*This is a conspiracy theory and not at all based on facts, don't quote me or take it too seriously

kembik ,

A plane crash can make it easier to claim an alive man is dead as there may not be a body.

I could see this as a means to keep Wagner troops loyalties in check, or just to keep everyone guessing. The most likely scenario though is that Putin did what Putin does which is assassination.

heartlessevil ,

The body doesn’t magically disappear. Although it is probably in many, many pieces, this can be confirmed through DNA testing on small samples.

Mangosniper ,

DNA testing that Russian investigators will do in Russia. And as we all know, they are trustworthy as fuck

heartlessevil ,

Wouldn’t they want to do that to show off their work? Or I guess not so they can distance themselves from it and pretend it never happened.

argv_minus_one ,

People are totally going to take that seriously.

storksforlegs , (edited )
@storksforlegs@beehaw.org avatar

I think its equally likely he was shot down/plane sabotaged, this is fake face saving thing, or the plane crashed due to shoddy mechanics. Whatever the case, the uncertainty works out in Putin’s favour.

And if this is a fake-out, I think it’ll be found out pretty easily. He is not so adept at disguises.

JCPhoenix ,
@JCPhoenix@beehaw.org avatar

Idk, I kinda think he looks like Admiral-General Haffaz Aladeen in that second photo.

teft , to worldnews in Bank glitch let customers withdraw extra cash

Under no circumstances would I assume that money I receive from an ATM is not linked to my accounts. I would also assume that the bank is gonna get theirs because generally speaking, they do.

“These transfers and withdrawals will be applied to customers’ accounts today.”

If they do 1-2 publicly, then everyone will expect it. It will just generate more press. I bet they defend none and fold.
