original_reader , to world in Supermarket sandwiches linked to E. coli outbreak

Why would anyone buy prepacked sandwiches anyway? They’re expensive and you obviously never know what you get.

What’s the issue with buying some bread and preparing some at home? Cheaper, healthier and really doesn’t cost much time at all. Plus, this doesn’t use as much plastic.

Arigion ,

As you already implied: when you’re not at home but travelling.

EnderMB ,

Meal deals are a British staple. Many office workers will grab a sandwich, a snack, and a drink during a lunch break. That’s probably why this has made the news here, because if you wanted to poison the most people at the same time this is probably the best way.

autotldr Bot , to world in Supermarket sandwiches linked to E. coli outbreak

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Food manufacturers are recalling at least 60 types of pre-packed sandwiches, wraps and salads sold in major supermarkets because of possible contamination with E. coli.

It is understood these are items containing salad leaves.Retailers involved include Aldi, Asda, Co-op and Morrisons. Some 211 people across the UK are known to be affected by E. coli currently - up from 113 last week.

Experts had previously said a continuing outbreak of E. coli was linked to food that was widely and readily available - but had not pinned down specific items. One of the suppliers involved, Greencore Group, has recalled 45 different products, external so far. These include an Aldi chicken fajita triple wrap, Asda smoky beans and cheddar cheese wrap, Boots chicken salad sandwich, Sainsbury’s Greek style wrap, Co-op ham and cheese wrap, Morrisons gluten-free sandwich platter and an Amazon prawn layered salad.Manufacturer Samworth Brothers Manton Wood has recalled 15 products., externalThese include a Tesco chicken salad sandwich, Tesco tuna crunch sub and Tesco spicy bean wrap.A third manufacturer is expected to announce a recall as soon as Saturday.Darren Whitby, head of incidents at the Food Standards Agency, said: “This is a complex investigation, and we have worked swiftly with the relevant businesses and the local authorities concerned to narrow down the wide range of foods consumed to a small number of salad leaf products that have been used in sandwiches and wraps.

"Andrew Opie, at the British Retail Consortium, said: "Retailers affected are taking swift action to remove these products from sale and are working closely with the Food Standards Agency to take any further action needed to minimise risk to their customers."E.

E. coli are a diverse group of bacteria that normally live in human and animal intestines. Some types are harmless but others can make people seriously ill.Tests have shown that the type in this outbreak is called E.coli STEC O145.It produces a Shiga toxin - which can attack the lining of the gut.Symptoms can include diarrhoea that can be bloody, stomach cramps, fever and vomiting. It usually takes a few days from being infected for symptoms to show. Most people recover well, but some - such as young children or people with underlying health conditions - can become very unwell.

There are things people can do to reduce the risk of infection.Regularly wash your hands with warm water and soap — alcohol gels do not kill all bugs that cause diarrhoeal illness.Wash fruit and vegetables and cook food to the temperatures suggested. If you have symptoms, you should not prepare food for others and should avoid visiting people in hospitals or care homes.People should not return to work, school or nursery until 48 hours after symptoms have stopped.

Definitely a partnership of convenience. As a group with prominent historical ties to National Socialists, it’s wise to limit their military power. OTOH, they have been extremely effective in fighting Putin’s army.

The enemy of my enemy…

jonne ,

Because nobody learned anything from operation Gladio. Once the war is over these guys will be doing terror attacks all over Europe with weapons they stashed and the US will act all surprised again.

TheBigBrother , (edited ) to news in US lifts weapons ban on Ukraine's Azov brigade

Seems just like an ideological alignment… why not supporting them then?

This makes me believe Ukraine it’s running out of grinder meat, for the US to ally with their ideological peers openly beside the appearances of “American freedom” being so important and being publicly condemned for it.

TheBigBrother ,

Being recluted for a pardon and 10 times the minimum wage than rotting into a prison seems like a fair deal at least for me.

I think lifting a ban of doing business with neo-nazis it’s several times worst.

Why would you lift the ban if you are not planing to do business with them?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I was responding to your ‘running out of grinder meat’ comment.

What would you call recruiting women in prison to fight in your war? It isn’t Russian feminism.

TheBigBrother ,

Why wouldn’t you? They are prisoners it’s better if they fight in the war than having them rotting in their cells… I believe it’s more human to offer them a way to redeem themselves and do something good for their country…

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Can you name another war in which a military which is not desperate for troops recruits women in prison?

TheBigBrother ,

Better to lose a war than doing business with fascists.

finley , (edited )
TheBigBrother ,

Not exactly… personally I don’t like Azov battalion it’s actually neo-fascism, but whatever…

finley ,

riiiight… defending Ukraine against an illegal Russian invasion–so fascist! /s

when you stop regurgitating Putin’s talking points, maybe someone will take you seriously.

TheBigBrother ,

Seriously… just see at the Azov battalion symbolism… you don’t need to be a genius to realize they are neo-nazis…

This article reads like it was probably put together to generate support for more IDF attacks on Lebanon.

Taco2112 , to news in Snow in June on Scotland's mountains as Arctic air sweeps in

Let me start by saying, I believe in human caused climate change, I believe it’s the biggest threat to the world at large currently.

I have to ask did any the doom and gloom people in this comment section read the article? Specifically the part where it says that it’s happens there every three to five years? I live in Colorado and have experienced snow in the mountains in summer. In fact Arapahoe Basin is still open to skiing for another two weeks this year. Sometimes it’s going to snow in the mountains in June.

I’m going to finish by stating once again that I believe that climate change is a threat that all of humanity faces on a daily basis, I just don’t know if “semi regular summer snow hits highland Scottish Mountains” is the apocalyptic omen that people here are saying it is. There’s plenty of those if you look around: scientificamerican.com/…/antarcticas-doomsday-gla…

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Three rusty water-trucks stand at the edge of Kibbutz Malkiya, on Israel’s border with Lebanon; little bigger than a family car, they look like something out of an old cartoon.A collection of industrial leaf-blowers is stacked nearby.“This is all we have,” resident Dean Sweetland explains.

“We have just these - and the leaf-blowers - to blow the fire back onto the dead areas.”Dean, a Londoner who moved to the kibbutz eight years ago, is one of a dozen residents left to tackle recent bushfires in the area, sparked by Hezbollah rockets from Lebanon.“We’re on our own,” he says.

From the back terrace of his home - built from shipping containers, a few hundred meters from the Lebanese border - Dean Sweetland points out the plumes of grey smoke rising from the hills nearby, to the sound of distant bombs and fighter jets. Most of the other residents of Kibbutz Malkiya were evacuated in the days following the Hamas attacks on Israel on 7 October, when its Hezbollah allies in Lebanon began firing on communities here.

Families evacuated eight months ago are still living in temporary accommodation further south. The blazes here are a vivid reminder that the Israeli government’s promise to secure these northern areas and get residents back home is still unfulfilled.“We feel like we’re the forgotten people,” Dean says.

“They don’t care about the north.”The attitude among many in the country, he says, is “let it burn”.“I think we have to take out Hezbollah for 10km, maybe more,” says Yariv Rozenberg, the deputy commander of Kibbutz Malkiya’s civil defence team.“You can’t kill them all, and they won’t leave from here.

Before a meeting of the war cabinet to discuss the situation on Tuesday night, the Israeli military’s chief of staff, Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, said the country was “approaching the point where a decision will have to be made”.The armed forces, he said, were “prepared and ready to move to an offensive”.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, visiting troops and firefighters in the northern town of Kiryat Shmona on Wednesday, said the government was prepared for “a very strong action in the north.”“One way or another we will restore security to the north,” he said. Many believe a ceasefire in Gaza would help cool the situation further north.“Gaza is the key,” Dean says.
