Paper is renewable. The fuel used to transport it is not. And let’s not forget the energy that goes into manufacturing and printing on the paper.

We haven’t been able to find a Walmart Pickup location that doesn’t use way too many plastic grocery bags, so we finally got around to buying and using reusable bags, and it’s so much better! I can actually bring in the groceries in one trip now. I’m never going back. IDK why the shoppers at Walmart insist on putting only 1 or 2 items in each plastic bag. I understand keeping some items separate for food safety, but this is ridiculous! I used to live close to my grandma who crochets plastic grocery bags into sleeping pads for unhoused folks, but we moved away from her and have no use for 20-30 plastic bags a week.

Beginner looking for NAS advice (kbin.social)

I'm looking for advice on how to get started with a NAS, probably Synology since it's beginner friendly and often well recommended. I'm thinking of a 2 bay case with 2x4TB HDDs in RAID1 setup. What do I have to look out for in a device to get the best bang for my bucks?...

I highly recommend timeshift. It makes it easy to make system snapshots (think system restore points) at regular intervals so that if you try something and it breaks your system, you can restore it to a working state. It has saved me hours of work from all of the reinstalls that I didn’t have to do. I wish I had something like this when I first started out with Linux. It would have saved me dozens of Linux installs.

Buying $109 worth of Bitcoin back in 2014. I was going to buy a year cloud mining contract, but the company (hashop) went out of business before I could. (I dodged a bullet there) I then proceeded to spend bits of it here and there (coincidentally, my second worst financial move) until I had about $70 worth left, which I put in a paper wallet and forgot about. In 2020, I was able to sell most of the Bitcoin, and bought a vehicle, which helped me get through college and made me more eligible when I met the girl who would become my wife. All this to say, I made some dumb decisions that just happened to turn out well for me. YMMV

Games with characters you miss most after completion.

It’s a bitter sweet feeling afterward, but I love it when a game has characters where, after the game is over, I miss seeing a part of their lives. Be it due to the characters themselves or the interaction they have with one another, exiting their world feels more like a loss than when normally putting a story away....

Noah Kekai talking to Faith in Mirrors Edge CatalystI just restarted my save in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, and man did I miss Noah! It’s good to have him back, at least until I finally run out of side quests and have to play the mission where he is callously ripped from my life again!

Younger users of Lemmy: Did you ever love a game that you just really sucked at?

So I was watching a few youtubes and remembered how the vast majority (of like the ten) nes games me and my sister had were hard as all hell. I loved to play Little Nemo and Street Fighter 2010 but I am pretty sure I never made it past the third level of either. Let alone infamously hard games like The Lion King....

Overwatch. I’ve played since 2018 and I still haven’t climbed out of Bronze. I love the story and character lore a ton though!

Yes, some unions do that, but not all. Some are company or situation specific.

I always bypass ever launching Edge by installing with winget install mozilla.firefox

Or just install Linux.

My main complaint is that the message is so big, and that it covers so much of the screen.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I dislike sites suggesting a monthly donation my default.

If one must use liquid accelerants, kerosene or (gasp) charcoal lighting fluid are good choices because they don’t turn into gas as readily or burn as quickly as gas. Again only of you must. Solid fire starters are more reliable and safe anyway.

Load them in mixxx, and then hit the 16- or 32-bar loop button on the sections you want to repeat.

It’s a great, foss DJ app. It gets better every time I pull it out to tinker with it. I’m not a DJ, but it’s a powerful tool.

Can you recommend books with meme culture humor?

No, I am serious about this. I wish to get back into the learning of reading, but as a beginner I am repelled by the intense use of vocabulary, literary devices of classical literature books or intense and difficult-to-follow storyline of modern day fiction. I want to read a book that is clearly made with people like me in mind....

Actually, the book has a completely different set of clues for the egg hunt, and you get to know the characters a lot better.

They have a point. After the Win10 EOL, the only secure option for hardware that doesn’t meet Win11 requirements will be Linux.

One of the first things I noticed about the app Connect for Lemmy is that it has a word blacklist. I haven’t tried it, but I see it there is settings
