No. It’s like expecting construction companies to enforce traffic laws because they build the roads.

terminhell ,

The owners of…the sites. How they do that, is up to them. But again, I’ll go back to my construction analogy: There’s a burgaler entering your house, who do you call and why? Not the people that built it.

terminhell ,

For the other men that see this: The stabbing is the pain of cramps. Had to ask my wife on this, as I wasnt sure what was meant.

terminhell ,

I don’t understand? I see these kind of vending machines often in gas station restrooms all the time.

terminhell ,

Where’s the racism? Is it the vague Asian marketed stuff? It’s a stretch I guess, of that’s it.

terminhell ,

Mental Outlaw has a video about post YouTube Vanced. Basically: Kiwi browser + sponsor block + ublock + a violent monkey script to allow audio playback when your screen is off.

And honestly, it’s been working great for over a year. I’d rate the overall experience as good if not actually better than Vanced tbh.

I mean, if diverting life support power would make the FTL engines work, so you could effectively teleport from A to B in seconds or minutes, it could be worth it? Especially if the destination is a safe harbor for repairs. Then resume life support. Not likely to cause instant death?

terminhell ,

Just a reminder of the 3-2-1 backup model.

Semi important things are backed up to my home server. Super important stuff is also stored on a big name cloud service.

Also, don’t forget paper exists. For smaller documents, it could be worth printing them, and putting them in a water/fire resistant safe.

Leaked Zoom all-hands: CEO says employees must return to offices because they can’t be as innovative or get to know each other on Zoom::Zoom CEO Eric Yuan discussed the benefits of in-person work in a leaked meeting.

terminhell ,

I don’t want to ‘get to know’ my coworkers. I’m not there for friendships, or a pseudo family. I’m there to do a job and be paid for it.

But, this might just be my introvert side.

terminhell ,

The legion series is terrible. Same for HP omen, and Dell alienware. The OEMs just cut too many corners for “gaming” stuff. I’ve repaired them all. Desktop and laptops, across all these brands.

terminhell ,

Don’t know, I’ve only worked on the 3 brands I listed.

terminhell ,

From another post about this yesterday, I found in the specifications section of their website, a “what’s in the box”: No mention of a keyboard. So the base model has no keyboard. So ya, choosing the layout is also opting for the keyboard, and, adding an extra ~$100 to the price.

terminhell ,

It’s what we get for not buying it XD

terminhell ,

Comment I was hoping for. Missed opportunity on their part XD But Spam being bros either way.

terminhell , (edited )

Wow, the price and openness of both the firmware and warranty make this a very enticing product. I’ve been casually looking for a new laptop, something to just watch youtube, browsing and manage my home lab with.

I checked out the actual product page, and it’s a bit confusing in the configurator. Seems like the default power adaptor is non-us by default. Easy enough to change, no cost variance. But the keyboard section is confusing. Additional layout options for +~$110. Does that mean a secondary keyboard? What’s the default?

EDIT: Any keyboard is not included, after finally finding the “what’s in the box” in the specifications section. So, factor in an extra $100 in the price if ya need it.

This is a welcome change tbh. All these other platforms push rage bait and crap just to drive engagement numbers.

It’s refreshing to go back a little to how the Internet used to be. You had to go and find what you liked, not have a million things pushed on you.

terminhell ,

It wasn’t always the case. Windows 3x gui had to be started from a dos prompt. But this anti cli sentiment swings both ways for all OS’s.

The bigger issue I have though is a general unwillingness to learn how to do things beyond click icons for apps. Devices now are engineered to be as simple as possible. Which ya, for most people is fine. But these devices in turn are generally way more challenging to fix. So it encourages just buying a new one instead. Creating more ewaste for something that should be easier to fix, all because of software, or physical assembly.

terminhell ,

I used to run a forum for my friends. On my own hardware for a while too. I too miss forums. I may look into doing it all over again, just cuz!

terminhell ,

I’ve been getting the g power series for a while now. Battery life is important to me in my field of work. And for ~$200 it’s hard to beat. No, it doesn’t have a great display, or even true 5g. No OLED or high refresh rate. It does have a 5000ma battery that can last two or three days of use. Head phone jack, SD card slot. Features somehow missing from premium offerings?

terminhell ,

Not exactly, though I see your point. I think it would be more accurate if McDonald’s charged for ketchup, mustard, salt, drink cups, lids, straws etc.

terminhell ,

Yep. The xerox one I got has done pretty well too. No drivers to download, for any device or OS in my home network. Shit just works.

terminhell ,

Worked at office Depot when this first rolled out, around 2013 or so. It was a hard sell then too. Was another reason I pushed lasers to people.

terminhell ,

Not my cup of tea, but I’m here for those that it is XD

terminhell ,

OMG I’d be so pissed. Like, I’d weather just pick them up myself, or track the bus down and pull them off of it.

For a time, I lived an hour from my school. Caught the bus at about 530am, and got home at like 5ish. Very rural area in the Mojave desert. But this is just so bad.

terminhell ,

As an almost 40yr old now father, this is such a hard choice. Except Jesus. I’ll never get to see that magic of the face of my child (4yr) the first time we would walk in. Or, the magic of my own face every time I went into a RadioShack. Blockbuster was just a cool place overall.

State of gaming on linux?

I used linux in the past, both privately and work-related, but the last time was over 10 years ago, so I’m a bit out of touch. I am in need of a new PC, but it’ll be a good year before I have the funds, so for now I am making due with an i5 7500 and a gtx 1660. I do have 32 GB so there’s that. I finally feel confident...

terminhell ,

Skyrim with proton GE will work just fine. Modding will be trickier. Vortex can be setup, with lutris. But I’ve ran into issues when it comes to external programs like resaver, loot, nemesis/fnis.

You could slap in a cheap second drive and see what happens. Compared to 10 years ago, it’s so much better.

Cyberpunk, Baldurs Gate 3, Sims 4, Minecraft (not a shocker, just need Java for modded), it’s been great.

terminhell ,

Stop buying these games. Or at least from EA

terminhell ,

I think this will vary too much between OS and hardware. For me, Vulkan feels better overall. Dx11 looks slightly better but less performant.

But I’m running all AMD hardware, Linux steam with proton.

terminhell ,

Fedora and Wayland for me. So idk.

terminhell ,

OP memes, but this unironically would slap.

terminhell ,

I always heard a big factor was the land/environment itself.

terminhell ,

Seems like the pre release was more demanding/less optimized. Running Fedora 38 and proton. Combined with the Vulkan option it’s been fantastic. And I think this weird glitch I was having two nights ago has already been patched ʘ‿ʘ

Specs: ryzen 5 1400, 16g ram, and a Radeon 5500xt. I had bumped a few options down on ultra, shadows to medium, and fog medium. Didn’t need to, but it’s helped without any noticeable graphic difference.

terminhell ,

Being familiar with dnd 5e will give you a head start in the basics. Things like how ability scores and combat/social interactions can play out. But not necessary. They’ve changed quite a few minor things that deviate from the tabletop game that I’ve found myself having to actually unlearn dnd.

Monks are actually useable. Went with a 4 elements subclass. So I have a mix of spell-like abilities for range, and can still smack things with my staff and fist.

The main thing is, being aware of the micromanaging you’ll have to do in combat. Don’t be afraid to use consumables. And explore! I’m still only in act 1.( I’ve had pre release for over a year, so I’m taking it slow to see what changes are in the actual release).

terminhell ,

Yup, and action economy is still king 👑. Action surges, flurry of blows etc. Even at lvl 5 vs lvl 2 goblins can still be dangerous if your group is outnumbered.

terminhell ,

This is becoming more common in the enterprise. And it makes so much more sense in that environment (and where M$ makes most of their money - business side, not consumer).

The consumer market would be trickier to implement with this model. Large portions of the US are still stuck with trash tier isp service.

terminhell ,

Hard to say. In the enterprise it’s still a windows base that’s heavily locked down with group policy. You then use that to connect to your virtual environment.

For the consumer side though, maybe an embedded windows that’s effectively read only, that would then give the option to connect. Or, something like pxe boot handled by eufi. I highly doubt theyd try to leverage something like Linux or even bsd for it. But again, the consumer market would be a harder sell for this, due to our overall garbage internet.

terminhell ,

I think the the divide in this is Thought vs Action. You can choose to think of whatever. Imagine things whether possible or not.

To be able to act on those thoughts could be an entirely different thing.

But even with thoughts, we’re still limited by our humanity. For you and I, we could likely find common ground on many things. Come to similar conclusions. But trying this with any other animal and it all falls apart.

[Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

I’m helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because “Linux can’t play games” despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones....

terminhell ,

No, no it’s not. Maybe with a standalone iso. But an out of box machine from the majore OEMs like Dell and HP, it’s not. Even if you never connect it to the Internet it can be nearly impossible to get around.

terminhell ,

I guess we’ve just had opposite luck. Cuz I work for an MSP, and deal with clients that insist on buying their own computers. 90% of the time it will be win11 home, and I’ll have to hope that the version of windows doesn’t include the various patches that close out the “I don’t have internet” option like win10 has. And lately even the F10 option to invoke the terminal is patched out. I’ve ended having to change secure boot options, then registry edits, then I can do the F10 option.

terminhell ,

I started off using jerboa. Just installed sync to see what the fuss is about. At the core it’s pretty much the same. One thing sync does better, at least on my phone, is smoother loading/rendering of content. There were times id actually use Lemmy web instead.

With that said, my favorite reddit app Boost, is working on a Lemmy client too. So I’m looking forward to that as well.

Am I ditching jerboa? No, not yet.

terminhell ,

Good. I’ve managed to block tiktok and all meta services from my network.

terminhell ,

This is more or less how I got started. I’d order a few of them, and my computers class teacher was super cool. Let me install it on some older machines destined for ewaste.
