The moral difference is the degree to which the creature can suffer and the capacity for it to flourish.

Suffering is a subjective experience, impossible to see any but your own. I experience so it’s likely humans do, other animals are similar and different to various degrees. Do you doubt the size of the animal’s brain or the configuration of their nervous systems has something to do with their capacity to experience suffering?

Flourishing considers the best potential life vs the worse potential life. Is it full-filling to be a cow just eating grass with the herd? Not in comparison to a human’s potential experiences. Could a pet cow have a fulfilling life with a loving owner as a pet dog? Not in all the same ways as it’s different, but perhaps it could have an equally high peak. As much as I know about a tuna fish, they won’t form as a meaningful bond with their owner - their peak life is not as high as a dog.

Why say “in 24 hours” when it’s a ban wave. They detected the cheater long before “24h”.

I’d rather the freedom of dedicated servers, playing how we want and long after they abandoned the game or disabled matchmaking.

Long ago there was an email from an MMO saying the player “cheated” for going into a high level area as a low level character and sucessfully looted from chests.

Firefox in the meanwhile but long term we need to move away from the unfathomably bloated web protocol standard/browsers.

I believe the rant demonstrates there cannot be more competition for browsers and therefore justifies the idea that browsers will stagnate and come to an end. I think the solution will be to move away from one application doing many things to using separate software dedicated to narrow purposes.

I wish I’d said “web standards” instead.

Including those but also all specifications defined by the W3C. I would post other examples here but I’m out of my depth.

Adding features endlessly, heedless of danger of the inate security issue from the complexity, makes for an uncompetative and ultimatly unsustainable ecosystem.

The alternative I believe in is to use seperare apps for each segmented feature (the dedicated video player plays the video, the browser merely fetches it).

When is rebranding ever good for users/consumers?

tabular ,
@tabular@lemmy.world avatar

That rebranding seems to me as just hiding past misdeeds. I’m not charitable enough to take apologies from companies at face-value, there would need to be some effort to explain and show change too.

tabular , (edited )
@tabular@lemmy.world avatar

Could be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I actually hate rebranding by itself too. I see a totally new name as just trying to escape their bad name, likely earned by their previous misdeeds.

Uncharted territory: do AI girlfriend apps promote unhealthy expectations for human relationships?::Chatbots such as Eva AI are getting better at mimicking human interaction but some fear they feed into unhealthy beliefs around gender-based control and violence

Where are they getting the training data from? If Twitter posts then no one will date the “AI” anyway.

The types of people I’d personally want to date probably don’t give out their data so easy.

For some “everyone” not talking to you is a perk.

The people I most care for use Discord. I worry I will lose constant with most of them if I stop using that too but I’ve never tried to get other to use something else.

A value in faith or sacred writings is in no way more “human” than a disdain for the illogical.

Does Framework do anything regarding FOSS drivers or firmware?

tabular ,
@tabular@lemmy.world avatar

It’s good to know it uses drivers already there. Sadly being part of the kernal somehow doesn’t guarantee the driver are not proprietary binary blobs.

What is your machine naming scheme?

I’ve ended up with a number of machines on my network, and a need to name them all in a somewhat logical way. For several years I had them named after the planets, which worked well until the PCs for myself, my girlfriend, servers and Raspberry Pi’s quickly summed up to more than the eight planets. I’ve broadened it...

tabular ,
@tabular@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve not played for years but I still have a YuGiOh cards naming scheme.

Other than the impractical task of reverse engineering then you can’t be sure what proprietary software is actually doing. Every update is more changes you’re not in control of. At best you can only say proprietary software has not been found guilty of “being a scam”, etc. When you have the source code then you (or 3rd parties) can find if it’s innocent.

With a universal basic income artists would be free to choose to make art for fun instead of survival. Given enough job destruction in transport a UBI-like solution may be manditory as there are not enough jobs for humans generally.

This add-on needs to:

  • Store unlimited amount of client-side data
  • Access your data for sites in the googlevideo.com domain
  • Access your data for sites in the youtube.com domain
  • Access your data for sponsor.ajay.app
  • Access your data for dearrow-thumb.ajay.app
  • Access your data for www.youtube-nocookie.com

This add-on may also ask to: **Access your data for all websites

Is there a better option than for it to need unlimited amount of client-side data? Also, why “Access your data for all websites”?-

If the objective is to avoid being forced to accept changes to software you use… why choose another person with the same power over you rather than free software?

tabular ,
@tabular@lemmy.world avatar

“Firmware” is a terrible name, it’s exactly software.

tabular ,
@tabular@lemmy.world avatar

This treats the software as if it were a physical chip which can’t be practically changed due to the physics of microchips. The imutability of the storage medium is just a choice of the manufacturer. Sometimes this is a good cost saving feature and sometimes this so they can include anti-features such as preventing repairing your device (e.g. OneWheel).

If my review is so valuable why not pay me for it. A real “paid review”.

tabular ,
@tabular@lemmy.world avatar

Minimum wage might not be needed if we instead used universal basic income. Low paying jobs wouldn’t be automatically exploitative since they would still have a minimum income. Perhaps some of those low paying jobs may even bd desireable for certain people over the current minimum wage jobs (e.g. lower or very infrequent hours).

Being able to easily switch back to Windows hindered my attempt to learn Linux. When I wasn’t in the mood to learn a new concept, or failed to get something working after a few tries, then I’d just boot right back into Windows. I was able to push on when I deleted Windows in a rage and now the alternative to getting over the Linux hill was going back down and doing the “no, no, no, no, fuck off” dance that is the Windows install process.

Websites recommending Ubuntu to noobs didn’t help me much. The panel being stuck of the left size of the monitor after my friend boasted about customization on Linux really grinds my gears. Linux Mint was much better coming from Windows, and I’m still on it years later.

My Experience Switching From NVIDIA To AMD (lemmy.world)

TLDR: From my experience, in 2023, the Mesa drivers with an AMD GPU provide an experience that is way better than NVIDIA with their proprietary drivers. And if you’re helping a friend get into linux, and or linux gaming I think you should steer them towards an AMD GPU....

There are people out there selling broken cards but if the mining card works then is there really any evidence that it’s less performant or any more likely to fail than a lightly used gaming card?

I’ve almost always bought new but I’d prefer to buy used now to save money and hopefully find out if it has any coil wine. That’s if used prices were any different than new (Ebay’s UK used prices are dumb).
