Google says AI systems should be able to mine publishers’ work unless companies opt out, turning copyright law on its head (www.theguardian.com)

In its submission to the Australian government’s review of the regulatory framework around AI, Google said that copyright law should be altered to allow for generative AI systems to scrape the internet.

Unless we want to expose all 7 million+ people who voted for and passed prop 8 in 2008 and cancel them all into oblivion.

I’m ok with holding them accountable. I say that as someone who was bigoted (in a light way - no wish for harm, but just thought it unnatural due to how I was raised) against LGBT people when I was younger.

If you want to call me out for what I thought when I was 18yo, I can proudly accept culpability and tell you that my values have changed. I can explain why they changed. I can defend me of today while throwing me of the past under the bus. By the time Prop 8 was up for debate, I’d long-since evolved. This fucker hasn’t grown, apparently.

some_guy ,

I tried to read this, but without proper context and what seems like bad writing (to me), I gave up a few paragraphs in. Can someone summarize what this means?

some_guy ,

I actually thought it was pretty clever. Now to work in the “blood libel”.

Also, did you know Jews are JEWish?! Be sure to like and subscribe.

some_guy ,

They aren’t going to be able to sell them to AI farms. That ship has sailed. All the valuable content was scraped before there was a cost imposed. Spez is high on his own farts if he thinks anyone is gonna pay their stupid API fees for that.

some_guy ,

Such as a group of four people who stop in the middle of the sidewalk to chat and don’t notice / make room when someone is trying to walk by. I shouldn’t have to ask you to make room. I will, but you should be self-aware enough to allow others to pass.

For example, people who only turn on their left turn signal when a light turns green. Asshole, if you’d had that on before, I would have changed lanes when approaching a red light. Now I’m stuck because the other lane is full of moving cars and I’m waiting for you to turn. Does it ruin my day? No. But it’s still inconsiderate.

People don’t think of others nearly enough. It’s truly one of my greatest irritations.

some_guy ,

Rinse them? I spear them right out of the jar. I love 'em. I’ll try rinsing one today to see what that’s like, but I suspect the oil and salt is a big part of why I like them.

some_guy ,

With a fork or spear. I dunno who the fuck would dip their fingers into the oil, but I don’t want to shake their hand.

In every reported case where police mistakenly arrested someone using facial recognition, that person has been Black (www.businessinsider.com)

Was this AI trained on an unbalanced data set? (Only black folks?) Or has it only been used to identify photos of black people? I have so many questions: some technical, some on media sensationalism

some_guy ,

I don’t know that facial recognition should be illegal for cops to use (though I don’t want them using it, overall), but there should be guardrails in place that prevent them from using it as anything more than “let’s look into this person further.”

Put differently, a report of a certain model car of a certain color can tip them off to investigate someone driving such a car. It isn’t a reason to arrest that person.

some_guy ,

I checked your name to see if you were a contrarian from another thread. You aren’t.

Then, I thought about the name you chose. Did you mean to spell Dessert (the treat after a meal) or was that a misspelling? Then, I considered that regardless of the intent in spelling, your name appears to refer to a war (Desert Storm: USA vs Iraq in the 90s). Even if it’s playful (Desserts Storming me, yum!), I dunno. At this point, I don’t suspect we align in ideologies. I’ll stop analyzing here.

some_guy ,

Here’s a handy trick that I use on sites such as this one. Between when the article loads and the paywall restricts it, hit a button to display the article in a Reader mode. Safari has this. I believe Firefox does. I think you can get extensions to add such a feature.

When the article loads and then gets paywalled, this works. When the paywall is immediate it doesn’t.

What are your thoughts on restricting children’s access to pornography online?

There are a lot of GOP-controller legislatures in the USA pushing through so-called “child protection” laws, but there’s a toll in the form of impacting people’s rights and data privacy. Most of these bills involve requiring adults to upload a copy of their photo ID.

some_guy ,

Agreed. Parents can install tools on devices (or use the ones that are built-in). Kids will find ways around that and that’s fine. Kids have to put in some effort and learn how to outsmart vendors and their parents. This will add to their problem-solving skills. When they finally get to the sex, they’ll be fine.

It’s really about teaching kids to have a healthy attitude about sex and sexuality. Republican kids will be taught that it’s bad and they’re bad for thinking about it. They’ll be fucked up in various ways. Proper parenting will teach kids that not everything they see on the internet is healthy to pursue and help them approach the topic in a mature fashion. Those kids will turn out like the rest of us who grew up with porn online. Fine.

some_guy ,

That doesn’t make the rest automatically trustworthy. Just not genocidal. Though I tend to agree with Progressives and Socialist Dems or Socialists more often than not. Regular, middle of the road Dems, not as much.

some_guy ,

You’re apologizing for racism without outright saying it all over this thread.

I live in the Bay Area and love all the natural beauty in all directions. We can hike a different trail every weekend during the months when it’s not unpleasantly warm or chilly and never repeat. The tragedy of it all is that it’s attached to the rest of the country, by which I mean red states.

Time for an educational link: www.whoismakingnews.com/#welcome

Aw, jee shucks. It’s not who they told me it would be! /s

some_guy ,

To be fair, though nutbag Caviezel talks about adrenochrome, the film omits that. I listened to two different podcasts review it (one of which is QAnon Anonymous, and anti-conspiracy show). But everything else you said is correct.

Good link. I hadn’t seen that article. Skimmed it and got a better sense of what real anti-trafficking folks think of it.

some_guy ,

Getting cranky and lashing out doesn’t convince anyone that you’re correct.

some_guy ,

I literally listened to this part of a conversation in early 2021:

A: I try to tell my brother, but he doesn’t listen. He said he just got home from a funeral for a friend who died from COVID and didn’t want to talk about it. I told him, your friend died with COVID, not from COVID.

It soured my mood so much that I couldn’t enjoy the fun thing I was on my way to.

some_guy ,

I have a simpler theory. He got arrested and journalists checked his socials when trying to write a story. He talked about this very subject online. Hey, look! No sinister motives needed1

Your version has journalists cross checking a list, trying their very best to discredit people involved in exposing the truth. That’s a sign that you’re not coming at this with clear thinking.

some_guy ,

Child trafficking happens predominantly via someone the child already knows (family or family-adjacent). It’s very rarely in the form that this film projects with random people snatching children off the street. The film depicts an almost fictional version of the issue. This is regardless of whatever good intent the backers may have had. But you have revealed yourself to be deeply enmeshed in your perception of the issue and I’m replying to point this out to others rather than to you.

some_guy ,

I listen to experts. You clearly listen to message boards. I’m done engaging with your QAnon-flavored rhetoric.

some_guy ,

No, but we can trust him this time. All those other lies were completely unrelated. /s

Well, Rudy had a number of embarrassing moments in public that I think caused Trump to lose any respect he might have had for the former mayor. Two that I can think of, the hair dye sweating down his face and the fart picked up on mic in a courtroom.

But his worst offense, in terms of how Trump views people: he lost. He’s a loser.

some_guy ,

You beat me to it on that last line, but I’ll highlight some others [emphasis mine]:

Berry is even more pointed about his concerns in the convoy’s private Facebook group where he and others have shared graphics claiming “the World Health Organization and the United Nations are instructing elementary schools around the world to have pedophilia normalized.”

Phillips says Sager’s comments point to the influence of “sovereign citizen ideology.”

As soon as I saw the headline, I wondered if Romana Didulo would be mentioned. She’s a conspiracy nutbag who declared herself the Queen of Canada and started her cult of followers caravanning back and forth throughout Canada. She’s been active since 2020. There’s a fascinating look at her org at Vice. She wasn’t mentioned in the original article, however.

some_guy ,

It’s those fuckin’ numbers, man! I keep trying to make them do what I say, but they keep responding rationally. I want 2+2 to equal 5, but they won’t fuckin’ listen!

Maybe later... how about never, you fucks?

It is endlessly frustrating that companies have universally decided that they won’t let people say “no” to stuff, ever. There are no longer options to reject stupid-ass new “features”, only postponement until next time you open the app/website/program. They’ll continue pestering you for the rest of your life. I...

Discord has been hassling me about whatever name changes I read about. I only open it once or twice a month, so I’ve been able to delay taking whatever action so far. If I was in there on a regular basis, that’d be a big pain in the ass.

ETA: Oh, and the IMDB app keeps asking me to sign up for an account. I’ve been saying no for literally years.

He constantly complains about how slow it its. He’s right again. Crap Software Vendor says it’s my platform that makes their software slow and buggy. I’m...

I visited a friend who lives far away. He was very proud of his setup for streaming HQ porn to a huge television in his basement. I got the sense that he hasn’t watched porn on his computer in quite some time. He’s married with kids, just the basement is entirely his fun zone.

some_guy ,

and it wouldn’t be a very nice hotel.

I worked at Apple while living 45 miles away about 10y ago. I got into a habit of staying in hotels like the Hilton when I had to pull long hours. The cost was less then than it is now. Even now, a quick search on Google Maps show these hotels to be in the $200 range or less. Probably cheaper on weeknights. It’s not one-for-one analogous to Mountain View, but it’s the same general area.

I’d rather double the cost and have my own space away from my employer if I had to crash nearby because it didn’t make sense to do a long drive. I especially would rather double the cost than give back part of my paycheck to my employer. That’s just insane mechanics, imo.

[Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

I’m helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because “Linux can’t play games” despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones....

some_guy ,

At that point, I think it’s fair to send said family member to Geek Squad and explain that you can’t invest any more time in the project.

some_guy ,

Bah! I’m in the habit of spending those calories (history nerd) and did so before reading your comment. Still, your comment is appreciated. Also, thanks to @Cleverdawny for clueing my into something I hadn’t known.

What I know of it is mostly from the HBO mini-series that aired a few years ago. Did it really have that much impact on the fall of the USSR? My understanding was that the gradual attrition of competing with the West was the ultimate cause. I’m interested to learn more. Gonna go read some wikipedia on it.

It’s easy to check a fact before putting your foot in your mouth.

Twitter.com’s unique visitors declined 3.3 percent YOY in March 2023.

One of my favorite aspects of Lemmy is that bootlickers are very easy to spot and don’t have loads of other bootlickers to support them.

some_guy ,

Similar to the misperception of the USSR from outside before the collapse.

some_guy ,

Tankie is sufficient. Filthy scum is a bit too far, imo. Like how I called a Musk apologist a bootlicker. But I didn’t say anything further. Let’s try to remain civil.

There was Rainbow Man, who famously went to sports games across America, holding up a sign that read “John 3:16” in an attempt to convert people to Christianity. He later died in a hotel shoot out where he took a maid hostage in his hotel room full of guns.

^ Emphasis mine. I was curious about this and did a search. Turns out he’s still alive.

A Freudian Slip or a joke? Either is funny to me.
