Or is it, “you’re saying empty platitudes,” energy? I think the latter.

some_guy ,

Good luck! Don’t get discouraged learning new things.

some_guy ,

There are lots of people with absolutely nothing. There are lots of people who live in places where this is a lot more money than it is where you or I live. There are lots of people who are desperate and want to take care of loved ones in both scenarios.

Also, there are shitheads who just don’t care. I don’t know which one this is.

some_guy ,

I don’t need to read it to know that it’ll be bad.

You reminded me of when a partner and I entered a grocery store to buy sun screen lotion. I narrated my thoughts figuring out where it would be and found it immediately. She commented on how she’d never have found it that quickly. All I did was make logical deductions based on my knowledge of grocery stores.

Truly, people think differently. What is natural to me might be alien to another.

Signed up for $5/month. I have a ton of Patreon subscriptions, mostly for podcasts but also a couple of software projects. I tried to donate to my instance to help cover hosting, but it was only PayPal (who stole my money many years ago and made it impossible to contest). I hadn’t ever considered donating to the devs, so thanks for making this post.

Put it on the blockchain! /s

Break my fucking heart. What a cutie.

This isn’t news, but I’ll accept that there are people who still haven’t learned this and suppose that it’s still worth publishing.

Seems like in 2019 there was a lot of energy / press about companies moving from China to India. The past year seems to suggest that India is unprepared to handle the load. I’ve seen articles like this one about manufacturing and I think another issue, but it’s early and I just woke up. Point being, we’re gonna rely on China for a bit longer than planned.

Anyone know how it’s going elsewhere? The only other country I know of as a China-exit is Vietnam.

I remember trying to explain that I saw fractals on the shadows, but couldn’t recall the words. “It’s the shapes that come from math equations…” “You’re tripping and you see math?!” Total failure to communicate.

some_guy ,

She parroted a well known line about, “the beatings will continue until morale improves.” This is a not-uncommon way of saying that a situation sucks, especially as relates to power-dynamics. Complete bullshit to characterize that as anything else. I will think twice before donating to the ACLU again.

some_guy ,

Too many conservatives making the news, I bet.

some_guy ,

The tragic thing about Candace Owens is that she’s smoking hot. Every time I see an article about her I think to myself, “All right, let’s see another pic of the hot shithead.” I can’t help myself.

I’m not into blonds. But that’s a reasonably good comeback.

Exclusive: Texas AG Ken Paxton could see criminal charges dropped in deal with prosecutors (www.statesman.com)

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is nearing a resolution to the 9-year-old securities fraud charges that have dogged his tenure as the state’s top attorney through a special agreement with prosecutors, the American-Statesman has learned....

The DOJ is looking into the possibility that RealPage is facilitating price-fixing among some of the large residential property owners and management firms that use the company’s product, according to the people, who were granted anonymity to discuss a confidential matter.

A handful of property management companies own all the new apartment buildings in my city, so I’m all for this.

RAID. No question. Or two individual drives each alternating full backups, which is what I do.

I just plugged in a new drive to replace an SSD that locked and wouldn’t write new backups. It failed a format attempt. I immediately ordered a replacement. Remember the rule: one is none.

And for fucksake, have an offsite backup.

some_guy ,

As they should. It’s well established that every one of the guys who did 9/11 was an out-of-the-closet gay guy who loved sucking dick.

some_guy ,

Previous reports have shown that hostages were treated well. What propaganda have you been imbibing?

PS: Sexual assaults on Oct 7 have thus far not been corroborated by anyone. That was all bullshit.

some_guy ,

What the actual fuck.

some_guy ,

Poor guy. He appeared to be completely unfit for the job, had to walk a super tightrope about not pissing off his own crazy party, and still got nuked by one of the craziest / stupidest members of his team. Can you imagine the stress? Fuck him. Let him stress. Wretched piece of shit.

some_guy ,

They need to be reigned in, but this isn’t gonna do it. The DOJ is arguing stupid shit and shit that isn’t accurate. What we need is regulation, not shitty attempts at weak lawsuits. DOJ even refers to Apple’s plan to allow alternative stores in Europe as though that was won through a lawsuit. No, dummies. It was legislation.

Peyton called Deshotel’s actions against him “very malicious”, adding that he has seen no indication the diocese ever sought to excommunicate any of the more than 40 priests and deacons whom it has included on the organization’s list of credibly accused child molesters. Among those on that roster is Gilbert Gauthe, who pleaded guilty to abusing numerous boys before being sent to prison in the mid-1980s in a case that is widely considered to be “patient zero” of the US Catholic church’s ongoing clerical molestation scandal.

“It’s totally unnecessary,” Peyton said of his excommunication, which was first reported by the Lafayette news outlet KADN. “And I’m afraid it will make abuse victims and their families afraid to come out.”

[…]

“[This] has deeply shaken my faith and trust in the institution to which I have dedicated a significant portion of my life,” Peyton said in his resignation email to Deshotel, which was shared with the Guardian. “This decision is not a rejection of my faith in God or my commitment to living a life guided by Christian principles. Instead, it reflects … a desire to distance myself from an institution that, currently, falls short of the values it professes.”

[…]

“That’s not Christ-like,” Peyton said. “That’s … a fancy way of the bishop … telling me to go to hell.”

Will they learn the right lesson? I doubt it.

One of the reasons that we have problems with the far-right is that they keep getting fucked over by institutions (just like the rest of us), but they fail to see the writing on the wall. They ascribe the reasons to Woke, Trans People, Diversity, Whateverthefuck. They rebel against society rather than rebelling against the system itself. The system stopped working for me. Something broke the system. Rather than, The system stopped working for me. The system is bad.

First actual good news I’ve read this morning.

some_guy ,

Nice to see some good news and sensible legislation.

I spent years where I was in a terrible depression and ate Hungry Man meals on a very regular basis. I still enjoy this one, the chicken with mashed potatoes and corn meal. I stir the corn into the mashed potatoes. The salisbury steak meal is also tasty.

I buy these at my local bodega about twice a year, now. Most meals are home-cooked by my partner, but she allows that I sometimes just want my crappy junk food because I grew up in the midwest of the USA and that’s how we ate. This is one of those “makes me happy” foods that requires no effort.

Disclosure: I also like SpaghettiOs

Edit: I don’t eat the brownie. I just don’t remove it and let it overcook and char.

You can write off any money that you light on fire.

It wasn’t a boisterous laugh, but this was my first out-loud laugh of the day. Even if a bit forced because I need to get out the door. Congrats. Thanks!

And here I spent years on dating apps trying to make myself seem likable when I could have just demanded a rich caretaker.

Longer article than I care to spend time reading. Texas still sucks, though. I’m quite certain that’s the crux of it.

Why do people hate TV shows like The Biggest Loser and My 600-lb Life?

I’m watching both of these shows in their entirety and I don’t know why they’ve historically gotten so much backlash. One reviewer called TBL “a dumpster fire of a TV show” and others seem to think M6L is downright abusive. However, I can’t find anything particularly bad in either....

Get this: The History Channel used to show documentaries about history. Everything is turning to shit. Capitalism rocks.

Police track down escaped Idaho prison gang member and accomplice, say pair may have killed 2 on run (apnews.com)

Police on Thursday arrested two white supremacist gang members — an Idaho prison inmate and the accomplice who helped him escape — following an attack on corrections officers at a Boise hospital, and investigators are looking into whether they killed two people while on the run....

some_guy ,

Skylar Meade, the escaped inmate, and Nicholas Umphenour, the man who police say shot two Idaho corrections officers early Wednesday to break Meade out of custody, were arrested after a brief car chase Thursday afternoon in Twin Falls, about 130 miles (209 kilometers) from the hospital.

If you’re only 130 miles from where you started a day and a half after you escape, you’re terrible at escaping. Must have really wanted revenge on those murders to make them so high priority.

SpaceX forced workers to sign illegal severance agreements, US agency claims (www.reuters.com)

The case is weak because DOJ fails to understand which things to hit them on (App Store). If they wanted to do this right they’d petition experts in the space (Apple pundits and journalists) in what ways Apple abuses people and its size, but instead, they build a shitty case that won’t get them on anything useful.

some_guy ,

Well, that’s fucked. I believe it was on Behind the Bastards that Robert Evans and Guest were alluding to this and comparing it to the Harry Potter kids who were apparently watched out for very well by the parents.

UC delays vote on much-debated proposal to restrict some faculty speech (edsource.org)

The policy doesn’t mention a specific issue, but many faculty see it as an attempt to limit what they can say about Israel’s war in Gaza. The consideration of the policy, which has been in the works for months, comes after UC’s Ethnic Studies Faculty Council and several faculty departments have criticized Israel over the...

A science book and a noteworthy thinker. But probably not terribly far back. It’s not like knowledge of electricity would go terribly far before other technologies (manufacturing, for sure) were ready to enable it to flourish.

How does data sent over the internet know where to go?

I saw a map of undersea internet cables the other day and it’s crazy how many branches there are. It got me wondering - if I’m (based in the UK) playing an online game from someone in Japan for example, how is the route worked out? Does my ISP know that to get to place X, the data has to be routed via cable 1, cable 2 etc....

And the Domain Name (Google.com) get’s converted from words we understand to the IP address. This is the Domain Name System, or DNS. Everyone on the network agrees that Google.com equals 142.250.189.174. If that address changes, the change gets passed through the system until everyone agrees on the new IP address. DNS is how your computer learns the address.
