I don’t think people use Brave for any crypto stuff all that much. I use it to block ads.

The Cooper Davis Act would force tech companies to report suspected drug activity to the government. Experts say it would be a disaster for digital privacy.

How to de-radicalize my mom's youtube algorithm?

She’s almost 70, spend all day watching q-anon style of videos (but in Spanish) and every day she’s anguished about something new, last week was asking us to start digging a nuclear shelter because Russia was dropped a nuclear bomb over Ukraine. Before that she was begging us to install reinforced doors because the...

This is a suggestion with questionable morality BUT a new account with reasonable subscriptions might be a good solution. That being said, if my child was trying to patronize me about my conspiracy theories, I wouldn’t like it, and would probably flip if they try to change my accounts.

I think this is pretty much what it boils down to. Where do you draw the line between having the right to expose yourself to media that validates your world view and this media becoming a threat to you to a point where you require intervention?

I’ve seen lots of people discussion their family’s Qanon casualties to recognize it’s a legitimate problem, not to mention tragic in many cases, but I would still think twice before ‘tricking’ someone. What if she realizes what’s happening and becomes more radicalized by this? I find that direct conversation, discussion, and confrontation work better; or at least that worked with family that believes in bullshit.

That being said, the harmful effects of being trapped in a bubble by an algorithm are not largely disputed.

I guess despite them being Qanon, I still see and believe in the human in them, and their ultimate right to believe stupid shit. I don’t think it’s ever ‘overthinking’ when it comes to another human being’s privacy and freedom. I actually think it’s bizarre to quickly jump into this and decide to alter the subscriptions behind their back like they’re a 2 year old child with not even perception to understand basic shit.

Exactly, no one said that.

I guess what I’m saying is that I’ll think twice before deciding something isn’t for someone to the point where I’d have to interfere without their own knowledge and consent (as opposed to talking to them).

The problem with censorship is that one always assumes they are correct and the other person is deluded. In many cases, like this one, it could be true. In others, it’s not. My point was to take caution when deciding something about someone’s life.

I came here to post this, glad to see this is already here.

Not only Sweden, but the other Nordics have done the same. One thing that bothers me is the clear lack of a proper alternative. On the other hand, I couldn’t give two shits about Google and any of its products. So now Google Analytics is going to lose out in this market, and for what? So many companies will now go into panic mode to migrate away from GA.

Yes, and it won’t be as wild-westy as people may like to think thanks to common sensibilities.

Could it have something to do with inflation?

“Extreme levels of data scraping” my ass. This is probably meant to reduce server costs because Elon put a huge hole in this boat and now he does a very loud “look-what-you-made-me-do” scream. And what on earth would “system manipulation” exactly mean? Sounds like some pseudo-profound bullshit.

And people keep falling for it. It will be a happy day when/if I figure out why people fall for this horseshit so much and how to overcome it.

For me, the biggest mistake he made was put the signup wall without an initial reading limit of 1-10 tweets. Tweets are used as citation by journalists in news articles because people use it as an official platform and many journalists use it to report on what’s happening to a fairly large audience of followers. This is only one example where the signup wall ruins it all. You can’t even go in to read a single tweet. However, look at Medium. I despise it on a personal level due to the quality reduction it caused, but at least it only shows the paywall after your 1sth/3rd/10th article. At least it provides a window to your website from the internet. Elon Musk has slain that dragon too now, and all the windows to look through have been boarded up. He has walled himself and all Twitter users in.

We can never escape this. It’s human nature.

Yeah, there should be simple "how and where do I sign up and find my favourite communities". I feel like there is lots of tech talk here because lots of tech stuff needs to happen before these sites are ready for the full moderation suit and for supporting the most basic aspects of Reddit communities (like flairs)...

Yep, it's email but with a nice interface and open 'threads' which we can post on.

They need to do a better job surfacing ANY KIND OF user-generated content. Seems like this is failing due to Reddit being a fairly old site, thus being bumped up the search results. Lemmy, kbin, etc communities are on newly created domains, giving them minus points on Google’s retarded result ranking system. This system is now effectively hiding the internet from us by holding out good content that doesn’t satisfy it’s ranking algorithm. This system crumbles in the face of new changes because they are treating the internet like a town square rather than an organic community-driven living machine.

snek ,
@snek@lemmy.world avatar

I agree that contributing is good overall, but with how this ranking system works, we might never make it to top Google search results even with good content. People are also spread over several decentralized forums rather than a single site (AKA Reddit, which is how Google likes things to be).

Sound a tad bit radical but the solution for me is to give up on Google and its attention-sucking click farming. I use Brave Search but it isn’t significantly better. Maybe a solution for searching here is to have a search engine that goes through online forums/communities/subs.

snek ,
@snek@lemmy.world avatar

I believe reddit was simply filled with all kinds of people. There is an array of subs to choose from with different interests and activity levels. I find it silly that people on reddit consider themselves “non-normal” and “geeky”. I don’t think you’re that special.
