More like sexual misconduct. It’s still fucked up, but it’s not rape

smolyeet ,

I feel like it would be weird to if you got a vpn for the purpose of downloading isos or making it harder to track you. It wasn’t always available to iOS users either ( I have an iPhone so that’s why I’m mentioning it) , so you already neutered those two bases. It seemed like a niche offering to begin with

smolyeet ,

Idk if I agree with this. I feel like 1000 goes further for a Mac than 1000 on on an equivalent PC, least as far as user experience goes. Windows arm isn’t there yet as far as support from vendors goes. With apple everyone hopped on the train fast , it was a smooth transition for average workflows. It will be faster and/or more efficient. They certainly have their problems , mainly the base storage , and display limitations but at least they’re fixing the latter of the two.

Not everyone wants to navigate a computer with a terminal. Hell , apple silicon Mac’s have outperformed Mac’s that cost 3 times the amount. I think you overestimate the need of a more powerful laptop in that space. The real difference is that Mac has N AppStore and large enough dev base that unless it’s some obscure windows specific software or games , the app likely exists on Mac. Word , Spotify , adobe adobe apps , he’ll even epic has software coming to Macs for hospitals.

If the price just gets so absurd , the common person will just use cheaper and or older alternatives. But it’s not like apple hasn’t been competing in the mid to low range for iPhones. M1 Mac’s are still excellent deals to buy 3 years later and eventually they can offer Macs at a lower price point. They aren’t stupid enough to isolate the common man when other options will always exist

smolyeet ,

I mean they did say few. Generally speaking, every browser is basically safari (WebKit) on iOS and apple doesn’t allow support for 3rd party browser extensions (least natively, Orion supports this somehow). So you’re already limited in that regard. If you don’t use safari , a browser like FF + VPN is IMO a better experience. You also have the option of just using wireguard and controlling your traffic at home/VPS if you’re into that.

WebKit might be open source but the browser deployed by apple is not. That’s like saying chrome is open source. They both use open source engines.

Idk how Reddit links are treated here but here are some good methods (I used the test/fake account like 2 weeks ago)

You can also use Rufus to make an installer that automatically bypasses it but I haven’t used it in a while and not sure if it still works.

The San Bernardino county sheriff’s department was responding to a 911 call on Saturday from a family reporting that a boy, identified as Ryan Gainer, was attacking his family at their home in Apple Valley, east of Los Angeles.

smolyeet ,

If I’m at a point where my life is being threatened and I can’t de-escalate, you best believe I’m calling 911. Cops are called all the time and help in situations like this; this cop was just incompetent

smolyeet ,

Technically, they do this every year.

So many out of touch people in every thread that mentions TikTok. The same shit we did on YouTube , FB , Twitter, vine, etc is the same concept on TikTok. Memes evolve or new ones are born, that is nothing new

Uvalde parents lash out after new report clears city police of wrongdoing during 2022 school attack (apnews.com)

UVALDE, Texas (AP) — An investigation Uvalde city leaders ordered into the Robb Elementary School shooting cleared local police officers of wrongdoing Thursday, despite acknowledging a series of rippling failures during the fumbled response to the 2022 classroom attack that left 19 children and two teachers dead....

smolyeet ,

Uvaldes is majority conservative according to Google, so that wouldn’t have happened. I expect nothing less of Texas

smolyeet ,

After using both (windows personal , Mac work) , I personally find the hot keys more intuitive in some areas and worse in others. Command being the requirement for a lot of shortcuts makes it easier , but stuff like show desktop or lock were annoying until more recent versions.

smolyeet ,

That’s fair. The dots under the application in the dock let you know what is open. I find expose easier to use because you can see them all at once like you can do on windows. I only look at the dock to see what’s open on windows, and I alway group them which is probably why the Mac setup works for me

smolyeet ,

Not investing in AI is a good way to neuter your already non existent user base. Part of why edge took off even more is because generative ai was added. Regardless of our feelings about it, choosing to ignore what’s hot in tech would be foolish.

The fakespot service is pretty useful when searching products on websites. It doesn’t have to be search results or code , but there are useful ways to invest in AI and maybe attract more users to your platform.

smolyeet ,

I mean it’s a website that hosts videos as part of the services it offers. And the video loads fine on mobile and desktop. I would check your network or browser settings. Unless it’s hosted by the actual article writer, hosting it somewhere is basically another social media.

smolyeet ,

Majority of the things I buy, usually aren’t at the store. Or there’s more of a variety. On top of that their return policy and process is pretty solid.

In-N-Out to close first location in its 75-year history due to a wave of car break-ins and robberies (apnews.com)

In-N-Out Burger says it will close its first location in its 75-year history due to a wave of car break-ins, property damage, theft and robberies affecting customers and employees alike at its only restaurant in Oakland, California....

smolyeet ,

For real. I learned about this from a guy delivering my weed when we visited. That’s when I learned what biping was. Never would have known. “You dont want to rent a car in Oakland”

smolyeet ,

not OP, but for me, using an iPhone and wishing it had a few features android had feels a lot better than using android and wishing it had features iOS does. It’s not like they both don’t participate in monopolistic practices

smolyeet ,

They don’t assume the risk? The moment I don’t pay by the third they are threatening to evict me. They charge rent that covers their monthly mortgage payment and then some. It’s the same shit. The place I rent now is owned by progress and it’s 50/50 it seems what they cover. On top of that I have to clean it all (professionally now , that’s new) when I move out. When I moved in the place was 1700 and now it’s 2400. There’s so much risk they’re taking in renting me a place , charging rent , but not getting anything back for it.

‘Front page of the internet’: how social media’s biggest user protest rocked Reddit (www.theguardian.com)

‘Front page of the internet’: how social media’s biggest user protest rocked Reddit::A mass user protest six months ago over technical tweaks had big downstream effects, and now the ‘front page of the internet’ is changed for ever

smolyeet ,

Well that’s the issue. Reddit as a tool/service is fine. The only thing that I have an issue with is the api / third party app stuff and their leadership. Subs like Homelab , league , etc are ones I used heavily and they still function the same more or less. I just lurk more and use Reddit in browser with an extension that helps.

Lemmy and the various instances and apps are cool, but the lack of content(or content creators rather) is what makes it a little depressing. Outside of memes and discussions like this, it doesn’t replace Reddit because the user base is like 10+ years behind. I can show up and find posts from days ago which just leads me to keep using Reddit and rss for new content

smolyeet ,

🤓 just wash your vegetables. Seems easier than relying on hundreds of people

smolyeet ,

For what it’s worth. , my coworker had one and his room didn’t smell. I assume it’s like owning any other in house pet where you just need to regularly clean their cage/tank

smolyeet ,

It’s so that you can’t share your card with friends. You specifically have to live at the same place and have proof when you add them to the account

smolyeet ,

Browsers on iOS just use WebKit. So chromium or quantum aren’t allowed. So all the work Firefox is doing for android isn’t compatible

smolyeet ,

AppleTV 100%. it’s 2nd really only to the shield when it comes to streaming formats , as the Apple TV doesn’t support some of the edge cases (as far as normal users go). Streams most things on my plex server. No ads , stellar performance. My 2017 4k is still a beast and I like the UI. You also don’t really have to deal with apps or services skipping your device because of some bullshit, and if you do it’s not long( hbomax, YouTube TV come to mind).

The only thing it really doesn’t do well is casting like chromecast or side loading but I haven’t had an app that I’ve wanted to install that I couldn’t so there’s that. It has airplay but it also requires you to have an iDevice/Mac but I generally wasn’t a huge user of the feature when I had my chromecast.

smolyeet ,

To my knowledge no but it wouldn’t surprise me if someone found a way to do it. It’s just that chromecast/Google TVs is a lot more friendly and open. You can cast iOS or android.

smolyeet ,

Idk about shorts but for TikTok, creators have the ability to turn this feature on or off, this isn’t the norm.

smolyeet ,

I mean , you can’t exactly go ask a doctor how to use lsd. Sometimes you just want to read up on something based on someone else’s personal experience. The website might be doing some dumb shit lately but it’s hard to replace the vast number of people who have answered exact questions you’re looking for. Lemmy just doesn’t have the 10+ year head start

smolyeet ,

It’s still the best search engine in my experience. I’ve tried using bing and DuckDuckGo. They just don’t cut it and the ai stuff isn’t particular impressive to me. Google just understands the power of defaults

smolyeet ,

lol i was about to say. Updates have been free since what , Lion? Lemmy is just hurr durr non Linux operating systems bad 🙄

smolyeet ,

I’d rather deal with windows and this than to use Linux. Apparently a survey is doing too much

smolyeet ,

You see how that works though. They express windows is apparently worse than Linux because of a survey. But I could say the same thing about I have no idea why anyone would want to use Linux and restrict themselves to an inferior product.

One survey in a browser that’s made by the os developer is fine and people just like to over react if it’s not their precious open source software. Putting up with using Linux seems like even more bullshit if you use any application that doesn’t support Linux.

Either way , they’re free services so who care.

smolyeet ,

We could make a list of complaints about either but most people would still use windows before touching Linux. It’s that simple. Of Linux was that good , why isn’t everyone just flocking to use and develop for it. 🙄

smolyeet ,

I’m just saying none of those are worth the switch to Linux. Not if you use applications that only work or work best on windows and to a certain extent Mac. Chrome and Microsoft do it to each other , it’s nothing new. Download your browser and move on.

smolyeet ,

YouTube has had ads for longer than I’ve been using it. They introduced it in 2007 from a quick google search. I started using chrome in 2009, and Adblock extensions not too long after.

I’ve been here the whole time and I’ve known that ads were a way to monetize the video, but I blocked them because I don’t like ads. For a while it just seemed like Google didn’t care. I just did it because I could and there was no alternative. When they released premium , I went that route. I use and depend on the service for a lot , so I don’t mind kicking them some funds.

But please do continue expecting something for free despite the fact you have an option to watch it for free with ads or to pay for premium because that’s how it always was 🙄

smolyeet ,

Because many of the people on this site are cheap fucks to think Linux is the best os and everything should open source and free. The modern internet is so bad while still taking part in it.

But at the end of the day, I watch YouTube in peace without having to find ridiculous work arounds on all of my devices. So we’re happy and they’re the ones upset

smolyeet ,

They recently broke hwid, but was recently fixed as of 2.2. The other method worked fine still

smolyeet ,

It’s not really a problem though, least not one worth being constantly all over my feed. the solution is in the picture. Allow YT ads or pay , it’s really not the hard.

smolyeet ,

When that happens to YouTube , I’ll change my mind. But until then I’m not going to continue acting entitled to keep using an adblocker because I feel they don’t need the profit. I solved that problem by paying for premium years ago. If you’re concerned about having your data sold, why even use the service. I’m helping support the content I’m watching either with ads or by paying premium. What they do with that information is a separate issue.

Some Walmart employees say customers are getting hostile at self-checkout — and they blame anti-theft tech (www.businessinsider.com)

Some Walmart employees say customers are getting hostile at self-checkout — and they blame anti-theft tech::When Walmart’s anti-theft self-checkout tech alerts an employee of a missed scan, it can cause some uncomfortable situations.

smolyeet ,

I can’t remember the last time I let someone ring me up at Walmart. Self checkout was always faster because most of the attended registers were closed. Most of my adult life I’ve bagged myself and idk if I’d want to go back tbh. The tech is annoying to deal with though

smolyeet ,

Ahh yes the value of getting something for free for almost 2 decades goes down the moment they actually want people to watch the ads or ask people to pay.

smolyeet ,

Better is subjective. But it does have some improvements that I think are worth it. The UI changes (rounded corners , center task bar) are nice but you can change it back to left aligned if you want.

Settings for simplified a tad , esp for things like static ip and dns. Y

Windows remembers your monitor and window locations upon docking and undocking.

Windows explore tabs are nice too.

Overall I wouldn’t go back (I’ve tried) but if you look at the features and they aren’t worth jt then 10 is all you need.

smolyeet ,

Meh. I pondered this but leaving it helps users still using the platform.
