Minneapolis mayor vetoes minimum wage bill for Lyft, Uber drivers: ‘An inexcusable betrayal of Minneapolis workers’::The city’s mayor nixed minimum wages for ride-hailing drivers in a move one city council member called “an inexcusable betrayal of Minneapolis workers.”

Bad journalism that doesn’t explain the current state of things for the drivers. Not everyone is up on the sanctioned exploitation of drivers.

What are they getting now and how does this improve things?

Don’t worry! The reader can find that in a different article.

From Google’s blog:

Last year, our global data center fleet consumed approximately 4.3 billion gallons of water. This is comparable to the water needed to irrigate and maintain 29 golf courses in the southwest U.S. each year.

From the WaPo article:

A large data center, researchers say, can gobble up anywhere between 1 million and 5 million gallons of water a day — as much as a town of 10,000 to 50,000 people.

Wary or weary?

One means you’re watching carefully, expecting a problem, while the other means tired.

Why don’t Lemmings capitalize the beginning of each letter in their title for their posts?

I would assume people would capitalize their titles in posts since that’s the standard pretty much anywhere else like on YouTube or news sites, and that’s what you learn to do in school. Why is it only different on forum platforms like Lemmy or Reddit?

Cant say for sure about Scrivener, but Bibisco has a native Linux version and it runs great on my MX 21.3 laptop. Working to convert my GF too, as we both write a lot and her laptop (same model as mine)gets hot for no reason with Win 10, not to mention its Windows…

I’ll try dropping scrivener into Bottles as a test and report back, but I think a native app is a must for a full time writer.

EDIT: Scrivener doesn’t just install in Bottles/Wine from what I can see. It failed for me, and I’m working on the dependencies, but as another commenter pointed out, the meta filesystem would likely be a deal-breaker for most on-tech-savvy users who need easy access to their files to share them.

I am not seeing any advice already given that I disagree with in entirety, but as a guy with a gorgeous woman who I met at work (our mutual work), and a guy who is also oblivious to ‘signals’, I wanted to share what she’s taught me, and my thoughts on your situation.

We met when I was 36 and she was 39. I worked at a remote location, she was in the main office. My second week on the job, I came to meet everyone and do a day there to learn the ropes. We were the first two in the office that morning. I had no desk yet, so I was talking with her at her desk, and just being myself at work. Tech this, music that, what i did in my last job, how long have you worked here, etc. At one point, she asked me to show her something on her workstation, and I knelt next to her and used her KB/mouse, then stood up and resumed conversation from the other side of her desk.

Months later, she made her attraction to me very very clear*, and we went on a date. She spent the entire date teaching me, because she felt that I was an unfortunate casualty of my own design. I ignored women thinking that they deserved respect (which is fucking true, BTW, don’t forget it) and aren’t eye candy for the work day, to the point where she was sending me tons of ‘signals’ and I didn’t know. Like when I knelt next to her, she thought it meant I knew she liked me, because she loved my wrist hair sticking out of my dress shirt. But I was oblivious. She said she practically wet herself being close to me, and while I was talking, she only heard, “words words words arm hair, chest hair, beautiful hands,” meanwhile, I was like, “here’s how you get that information from the database…” work, work, beep boop. She still dies laughing at me about this.

I said people didn’t find me attractive or charming, and she laughed. She told me others at work had been checking me out too. What? Me?

We finished at our restaurant and stopped to fuel up. She jumped out of the car while I was fueling to show me the woman at the other pump stealing glances at me. I said it was my car she was looking at, and shrugged it off.

She and I have since moved out of the country on an adventure together, and she loves and hates my obliviousness. She says we ‘wasted’ months because she waited for me to act on her ‘signals’ and she was sad the whole time thinking she wasn’t my type, when I did like her, but I assumed that she was only being nice. On the other hand, she knows I’m not checking out other women (though she would love it if I did. What? She just likes knowing I’m happy, and thinks that knowing people are attracted to me makes me happy. Meh. She makes me happy. But I digress).

So I’m not advocating that you go against the advice here of respecting worker/customer boundaries. But it might be useful to examine if you might be similarly oblivious to genuine advances (signals). I never did anything to make her uncomfortable at work, and we ended up together, but she definitely wishes I had been more aware and asked her out on day one. I think there’s likely a way to ask your cute girl if you’re reading the ‘signals’ without being weird or making her uncomfortable. Lots of “I’m sorry if this is out of line,” and also, “I’ll totally understand if I read it wrong” to let her know you’re just confused and hopeful. Or hey, maybe at your restaurant is the right place! I’m on record as not being the best at this…

More funny deets: *The way I finally realized that she was into me was when she called me on my desk line and asked if we could just stay on the phone as long as possible, because my voice calmed her. After an hour or so, I finally (FINALLY) became aware the she was giggling a lot, and doing her best to keep me taking. She said something like, “your deep, sexy voice…” something, something, “makes me feel like a girl again.” Pretty blatant and obvious, so you can imagine the less overt signals I was missing if it came to that. Now, when we’re out, she loves to point out women (and guys) checking me out. She also loves to rib me about not realizing that her coming to work at my remote location with no justification was another signal. She used to email me the most random messages because she worried I was lonely at the remote location. She got a copy of my resume and used to read it at home and think about how “qualified” I was. She secretly recorded me singing to her after a date and played it for her family saying, “this is my future husband.” She drove 30 miles in a blizzard to my remote location when her office was closed to “get something done,” but then chatted with me until my location closed as well.

And I had no clue until our first actual date that the hours we had spent working together were so full of her flirting with me. I knew she was nice to me, and I thought we were friends, but I never guessed more than friendship.

Note: this comment may read like I am a male model who had no clue, but I promise that I’m just that way to her. I’m just her type, is all.

Dude, she’s out there.

I never knew some ladies love hair as much as my amazing partner. Like, I’m talking to her in my towel after a shower, and I recognize the glazed look in her eyes. She hears nothing I say until I cover my chest or arms, then its like, “Hey! Don’t cover up!” (Actually, she just says ‘chest hairs’ and I know what she means…)

She says its like she’s a 13 year old boy seeing boobs for the first time. Every time. And that’s how I feel about her too.

And I’m not even that hairy!!!

Not OP, but I like that libreoffice:

  • Works on Linux without wine/bottles
  • Isn’t 9GB
  • Has no hooks into 0365 or Office.com or any other web junk I don’t need
  • Can be updated in less time than reimaging a workstation
  • Doesn’t change major elements of the GUI including available options and default styles each major update

I also trust the document recovery options more, and enjoy using ‘free’ software when possible

I just started using Linux... any great tips?

I just installed Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (Cinnamon) on an empty laptop a couple days ago and have been experimenting a lot. I’m coming from being a Windows user since I was just a little kid playing old DOS games on my grandpa’s Win-98 PC back in around 2000. My daily driver is currently running Windows 10 but I am pretty adamant...

My tip would be to try a few distros before you settle on one. Ubuntu was it for me about seven years ago, but I used mint for a few years and am using MX with xfce now.

Also, sudo !! is pretty useful when you forget to sudo the previous command. It means “super user do the last command I just boneheadedly forgot to do that to”

I think you missed all the important bits related to the headline:

A businessman cheated a council out of tens of millions of pounds and went on a spending spree with the cash, an investigation has discovered.

Leaked documents reveal how Liam Kavanagh used Thurrock Council’s money to buy luxury goods, including a yacht and a private jet.

The council has been made effectively bankrupt after investing £655m in Mr Kavanagh’s solar farm business.

Mr Kavanagh’s lawyers say all the payments were permissible.

They say they were approved by his company’s finance team and auditor.

Thurrock is one of a number of councils that have got into financial difficulties since the coalition government gave local authorities more freedom to raise funds and invest in 2011.

Woking, Slough and Croydon have all been forced to stop all non-essential spending after losing public money on risky investments.

Private jet IMAGE SOURCE,MARIN GHE/JETPHOTOS Image caption, Mr Kavanagh bought a private jet (pictured)

The Audit Commission - a spending watchdog that stopped councils taking too many risks - was abolished in 2015.

Conservative-led Thurrock Council started investing cash with Mr Kavanagh’s business Rockfire the following year.

The idea was that the council would get regular interest payments from the profits and its cash would be safe because it was secured against the value of the solar farms.

But the interest payments stopped after Mr Kavanagh wound up his companies and the estimated value of the solar farms is less than the council thought.

Administrators are now selling the solar farms and Thurrock is facing a £200m shortfall on its investment.

The council has been forced to cut services and put up council tax.

If you are willing to use Signal, you already don’t mind a tiny userbase, so why not use Session (or maybe Matrix) and enjoy privacy, security, AND anonymity?

Signal has always been clear that privacy!=anonymity and regards people who want both as both stupid and unusual. Its always been a weird dance to watch.

thank you Linux for giving a damn about Bluetooth headphones (feddit.de)

For context, LDAC is one of the few wireless audio codecs stamped Hi-Res by the Japan Audio Society and its encoder is open source since Android 8, so you can see just how long Windows is sleeping on this. I’m excited about the incoming next gen called LC3plus, my next pair is definitely gonna have that.

s38b35M5 ,
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

I definitely love it for the “it just works” (or rather, you have full control to make it work) factor!

I’m not familiar with the latest in BT audio, but isn’t the standard still sub-par in that it has very limited overall frequency bandwidth, resulting in deep sacrifices to fidelity?

I recall a detailed analysis of different BT audio codecs a while back, and the spectrum analysis always showed relatively high noise floor and frequency roll-off (hi-cut/low-cut) within the threshold of human hearing (though admittedly close to the limits). Also, I recall (and this could just be the 2016 tech I am familiar with) that overall bandwidth was limited in that if you played something with low frequency tones, the upper frequencies were dropped, or vice versa. I used to confirm this by using a flat EQ setting, then boosting any range, and you could easily detect the loss of frequency response in the adjacent or distant ranges.

Is this a thing of the past now?

s38b35M5 ,
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve had BT disconnect issues on a 2015 HP EB 840 G2 paired with my ancient Logitech UE speaker. Not sure if it’s the implementation of bluez on mxlinux or my actual bt hardware on the laptop. The result for me is similar to yours: laptop is flaky, so my phone remains my playback source of choice.

Can you please ELI5 tmux?

I am fairly familiar with Linux, I’ve been using different distros for some years now and have done some config editing here and there. Do you have any idea why the files disappeared after reboot?

I suspect the files were actually in a timeshift snapshot, so when those files were deleted, so were the files.

I’ll give your links a thorough read, thanks!

s38b35M5 OP ,
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

Deleting the snapshot files lost considerable data including all files created after the aborted snapshot. The reboot that initially uncovered the problem led to a boot in “basic” xfce, and searching for the work files in read only mode from live boot shows no files/folders created in /home/username after the snapshot. It seems to have behaved like a VMware snapshot that had files living in the snapshot.

s38b35M5 OP ,
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, the paid version (in use here) can create those bibisco2 files, though only the auto-save backups are by default. As you said, by default, the work is in a type of database format with a gibberish GUID-like naming convention.

It’s the auto-save files we’re after.

I’m getting setup with an external drive large enough to write recovered files to, but I don’t like my odds at discerning how to add custom formats based on headers. I’ll watch some tutorials and see what I make of it.

Thanks for your comment!!!

s38b35M5 OP ,
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

It seems the files were all living in a timeshift snapshot file, as photorec/testdisk showed no deleted files, and a few deleted empty folders in the /home/timeshift folder. I think this is just a painful lesson that we’ll move on from.

Edit: Nice edit. You think a militarily equipped 38’ full or center console boat costs less than 100k??? You’re off by a factor of 5-10x.

Where does it say the boats are militarily-equipped? The boat manufacturer sells “normal” aluminum boats. ++

I’m glad I read the piece. Will I read more of the article from this source? Probably not, but as “aid” money going anywhere these days seems to include a huge overspend and some questionable use of funds, I’d rather know about it than dismiss it because of some opinions I can easily ignore.

Edit: ++ doing some digging on “GRAVOIS ALUMINUM BOATS” (who seems to be dba for Metal Shark boats) and they do sell boats with various levels of fitment beyond civilian use. Will update if I find pricing…

Edit2: it looks like a “military” spec 38’ boat can be in the $400k-$600k range. So it would follow that that could easily expand on a government contract. Still am glad to see this reporting, despite some shared misgivings. Thank you for encouraging me to do my own research and not be a lazy consumer of news.
