One of these days… I like my apps. I understand there aren’t as many available for Linux.

riley0 OP ,

Yes. I’ve used all of them, back to XP, & before that, MS-DOS. I bought a new computer a couple of years ago, & W11 came with it.

riley0 OP ,

I tried MAS & got this error msg. Maybe I’ll go offline, turn off antivirus, & try again. If I understand correctly, no remote-control apps will work unless that’s enabled in Windows. https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/pictrs/image/283b6dc4-8b67-497f-b33b-26733fdadfc7.webp

riley0 OP ,

Thanks. Done that. Trying to do it without the cable.

riley0 OP ,

Thanks. That works. Just looking for something a little less cumbersome.

riley0 OP ,

Thanks. I’ve done the iTunes thing & find it cumbersome. Remote-sharing apps require that the OS permit remote sharing. W11 home version doesn’t.

riley0 OP ,

I disabled antivirus, tried again, and was told W11 home was already permanently activated. No upgrade-to-pro option. Oh, well.

riley0 OP ,

Ooooh, I didn’t know about that. Thanks!

riley0 OP ,

I’ve just installed it on both devices. Thanks!

riley0 OP ,

Wow! Thanks!

riley0 OP ,

I know.

riley0 OP ,

Found it. sci-hub.se Get link from JSTOR, then paste it into sci-hub. Startpage/Google/Bing/Yahoo weren’t any help. Yandex came through.

Help with DVD problem, please.

I got a DVD, never used with cellophane intact, produced in 1993 on ebay. I thought maybe, since I didn’t get a DRM warning, it predated DRM, and I could just copy it to my hard drive, so I did. Both the copy and the DVD are now corrupted and unplayable. I want to fix the DVD then rip it to my hard drive. Googling gives plenty...

riley0 OP ,

Yes, although VLC was the only program able to play it.

riley0 OP ,

On closer examination, the performance is from 1993. Discogs shows a 2005 release, and Presto Music seems to be selling a version that says it was released 29th Jul 2013. The back cover of the container I have says copyright 1993. I played it before trying to copy it. VLC is the only app I have that recognized it. Pot Player and Windows Media did not.

riley0 OP ,

It played fine before my attempt to copy it.

riley0 OP ,

Other disc works in same drive.

riley0 OP ,

Just tried it and got “Error ‘Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:ILLEGAL MODE FOR THIS TRACK’…”

riley0 OP ,

FWIW, the same thing happened a couple of years ago with a more contemporary DVD. At the time, I didn’t know I couldn’t just copy it. After using Windows copy function on it, I couldn’t play it. I found a program called BurnAware that fixed and ripped it. BurnAware isn’t able to recover this disc.

riley0 OP ,

Thanks. No dots present.

riley0 OP ,

It’s silver. I’ve got 3 optical drives and no standard DVD player.

riley0 OP ,

Other discs work in same drive. This happened once before, and I used an app called BurnAware to fix and rip the DVD. Apparently it’s part of DRM meanness. BurnAware isn’t working on this one.

riley0 OP ,

Everything is set to region 0. Tried the DLL file and got this, “Your input can’t be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL ‘file:///D:/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB’. Check the log for details.” Checked VLC using other files, and it’s fine.

riley0 OP ,

I don’t think I can rip until the data is again readable.

riley0 OP ,

MKV doesn’t get you past DRM anti-copy, i.e. it won’t let you copy a DRM-protected disc into an MKV container, as far as I know.

riley0 OP ,

I went to the webpage. It says MKV makes ISO backups, so I remembered wrong. In the forum, somebody said they used DVDShrink to make an ISO. I downloaded DVDShrink and ran its media player, which was able to read the corrupted disk. After playing it in DVDShrink, VLC and Pot Player were able to play it, too. Now the first thing on the screen is the DRM warning, which didn’t come up before. Now the DVD is playable and backed up to PC. If you hadn’t been adamant about MKV backups, I’d still have a problem. So TYVM!

riley0 OP ,

I’m sure you’re more technically knowledgeable than I am b/c most people here are. But I tell you for sure though that my copying the contents of a DVD to PC using File Explorer resulted in an unplayable DVD twice. It’s fixable. I’m bookmarking this in case I forget what a mess this causes and do it again. I’d be interested to know the result if you try it to prove me wrong.

riley0 OP ,

Problem solved by DVDShrink. Thanks, everyone.

Anyone know how to test external optical disc drives at a thrift store?

In short I need a cheap external disc drive and dont want to cough up the 20$ and buy online so thrift store it is. I cant really come up with a way to test these usually usb powered drives besides somehow setting up a computer or asking the workers for help (doubt they will). Does anyone have an idea to narrow down if a drive...

Ask to plug it into a working computer they’re selling.

New anti-VPN measures at BBC

Today, for the first time, I couldn’t use iplayer. As usual, I switched country to UK, cleared browsing data, deleted everything from temp app data file before going there. Was using Firefox. Tried same procedure with Epic browser. Same result. Chatted with Nord support. They wanted screenshots of results from dnsleaktest dot...

riley0 OP ,

It used to be that they didn’t throw me out before I got to a program’s page. Today, upon login, they redirected me to BBC’s main page. Google tells me this: “In addition to the measures listed above, the BBC is also reportedly working on a new anti-VPN measure that uses machine learning to identify and block VPN traffic. This measure is still under development, but it has the potential to be more effective than the BBC’s current anti-VPN measures.”

I don’t know whether I’m knowledgeable enough for Tailscale, but I’ll give it a try. Thanks.

riley0 OP ,

thanks

riley0 OP ,

No, I have Nord. At the time I subscribed, I hadn’t discovered all the wondrous things on Sail the High Seas or FMHY. Nord looked like my best bet judging by search engine results.

I just tried Tailscale. Downloaded & installed, then nothing. Task Manager told me their GUI was running, but I didn’t see it. Repaired (via uninstall) & tried again. Same. Uninstalled & reinstalled. Same. Tried running as admin, just in case. Same. I’ll try again another time.

riley0 OP ,

Thanks for the clearest explanation of Tailscale I’ve read.

riley0 OP ,

Thanks. I’ll try it.

riley0 OP ,

I didn’t do it. When I got to the recommended site for a pre-paid online card, I realized I’d have to provide bank info to yet another online site. I’m trying very hard not to do that. If there’s a particular performance you’re looking for, try a search engine, using composer, performer, and date. I often find Yandex is more useful than Google/Bing/Yahoo in finding videos of classical music. People post classical performance videos on VK and on disk space that comes with Yandex mail & VK mail. Western DRM doesn’t get checked as often there.

riley0 ,

There’s one fairly local here. They carry non-perishables, and their stock is definitely better than the dollar store. They used to be called “Freight Liquidators.”

riley0 ,

Thanks, I didn’t know. This is interesting: “…there might be something about the experience of elevated power and status that reduces our willingness to give to others.” Political realism on a micro scale?

Seriously, though. How often do you think of the Roman Empire?

I know this is a joke/meme, but I sincerely think of the Roman Empire a surprising amount of times. I find myself obsessing over how Roman citizens were living just as complex lives as we are today, or about Marcus Aurelius’ life and philosophy, or about how the Republic fell and became a totalitarian state.

riley0 ,

Via imperialism. Then, when their enormous military became too expensive, their empire crumpled. Or maybe it was the lead pipes.
