I was driving my brother in law and he was trying to tell me some news he heard but couldn’t get the specifics so he spent ten minutes searching tiktok for it. I couldn’t believe it

ramirezmike ,

it’s a beautiful city, but those crosswalks are so annoying

ramirezmike ,

this makes so much sense, how do you know all this?

ramirezmike ,

ooph, I just started trying to make a mobile game in Jan 😬

ramirezmike ,

I’ve been doing itch and jams for a little bit, even managed to win one once. I’ve learned a lot but can’t shake this feeling that I’m just making free games for itch. You might be right though… whatever kind of sea of games I think itch is, the mobile sea may be a lot worse.

ramirezmike ,

I’ve been mostly making games for fun and am fairly risk adverse so am planning on sticking with a stable job and making games in my free time.

It’s discouraging, but it is reality. I still want to try, but definitely not putting more than one egg in this basket.

I’ll admit I’m knowingly doing the following haha

https://programming.dev/pictrs/image/4505ffc5-6f05-4d69-b438-ebb6f3d68175.png

hopefully it’ll at least be a positive experience and I learn something from it

ramirezmike ,

remember how white vehicles were always covered with dead bugs? and how people used to put nets on their front bumper?

ramirezmike ,

doesn’t work well with non-native english speakers though

ramirezmike ,

it’s a tough choice but I made a similar one. I shave my head every week or so with clippers with the smallest guard. I don’t like how shiny my head is sometimes but eh, overall it saves a lot of time and money. It’s not a big deal but society makes it feel like it is, especially if you’re a woman

ramirezmike OP ,

that sounds familiar. I was inspired by this post though

ramirezmike OP ,

thanks! likely the one funny meme I’ll ever make 😂

ramirezmike ,

most games are made in Unity. Like, more than half and up to 90% depending on platform.

ramirezmike ,

Sorry if that came off the wrong way, I’m pretty frustrated with Unity myself. I’m just pointing out the difficulty it would be to avoid Unity games. I think donating to other engines and supporting developers who use other engines might help, but Unity is just too engrained in the industry it’ll be years before it actually loses its grip and you’d really just be hurting developers and not Unity by boycotting their games.

ramirezmike ,

that link is pretty vague on specifics. It lists unreal first at the top but it’s not clear that it’s sorted by usage or just by their recommendation on what to use. To be frank, I don’t like unity and I’d personally use unreal over it, but I’m just pointing out that unity makes up a lot of games.

If you scroll down it even says

The most used game engines in the industry are Unreal Engine and Unity. These engines have a large user base and are widely adopted by game developers.

Again, without measuring or indicating which is more. This article has some some statistics from steam and itch and admits it’s difficult to count. The results from itch are more trustworthy because of how the data is gathered but you start getting into “what counts as a game”? There’s more information here on usage including that it makes up 90% of games on VR platforms.

It’s difficult to measure because games aren’t required to publish this information, but depending on what counts as a game (do hobby games released on itch count?) it can be a significant amount.

ramirezmike ,

my childhood friend called him “seh-pirth”

ramirezmike ,

The demonic cat-sith called Big Ears could be summoned (Gaelic taghairm Scottish Gaelic pronunciation: [tɤrʲɤm]) to appear and grant any wish to those who took part in the ceremony. The ceremony required practitioners to burn the bodies of cats over the course of four days and nights.

wow

Are any self-cleaning cat litter boxes any good, or worth the money?

Does anyone have any experience with self-cleaning cat litter boxes? I’m curious if any particular model of self-cleaning litter box is any good. We now have 4 cats and it would be nice to not have to clean litter boxes manually 1-2 times every day....

ramirezmike ,

wait, you have robots?

ramirezmike ,

do you use clumping litter? not everyone does, which can make it messy if you leave it for them to kick up the next time they go. Not to mention the smell… if you’re really leaving your cat’s pee go for days at a time you might be nose blind to the smell it makes.

ramirezmike ,

I feel like your examples aren’t quite what OP was referring to. Those games have pretty great gameplay

ramirezmike ,

OK OP is a weirdo, my bad

ramirezmike ,

I’m in the middle of the boss fights book on Goldeneye and I think it talks about this specific face

ramirezmike ,

GTA games are expensive to make. All that multiplayer bullshit subsidies the single player campaign. I was pretty satisfied with GTA 5 and GTA 4 and didn’t touch the multiplayer. is it a big deal if they continue that pattern?

ramirezmike ,

have you seen Forbrydelsen / The Killing?

ramirezmike , (edited )

I just tried this out a little bit ago. I couldn’t get the Linux version working but I downloaded the windows version, added it to steam, set the proton version to the newest one (.8 I think? it had an 8 in it) and it worked pretty well

haven’t tried changing any settings but beat the first mission without any issues 👍

edit:

actually, check out the steps in the last comment here github.com/fgsfdsfgs/perfect_dark/issues/83

ramirezmike ,

hah, this was me with Grooveshark.

and then I lost everything when it shut down.

and then me again with Google play music. “upload your music, we’ll keep it for you”

and then I lost everything when it shut down.

“oh it’s ok, you can just use [new service], it’s better anyway”

it just isn’t the same, you lose stuff everytime. I don’t think it’s worth it.

ramirezmike ,

yeah, it did not work for me ¯_(ツ)_/¯

ramirezmike ,

this hit me hard on multiple levels. There was a lot of live performances and remixes on Grooveshark that just don’t exist anymore.

But, I also lived where they were headquartered. They had started a “Grooveshark university” for local programmers to learn the ropes and it was really cool. I was self-taught but learned a lot from that experience. Such a shame

ramirezmike ,

I had albums with missing songs, a few albums wouldn’t transfer. I had versions of songs that were different.

I didn’t lose everything but there was enough that I cared about that I no longer want to trust a system where I don’t actually own the music

ramirezmike ,

what does this even mean? “sure they’re fun” and also “not particularly good by any measure” are conflicting statements

ramirezmike ,

Fast food can be delicious and filling, but it’s not good food.

this is a completely different argument. Fast food is “good by any measure” because it’s good by the measure of delicious and of filling. It doesn’t make sense to complement something and then say it’s not good in any aspect.

ramirezmike ,

isn’t it “good” by the measure of it being your favorite?

ramirezmike ,

it’s been a long time since I took biology but my gut keeps telling me that this isn’t some binary thing… like, all these suggestions we follow to me seem to be about minimizing exposure… like if I get 100 individual covid viruses in me through a cheap, cloth mask, my body can fight it off. And that may be a different outcome if I didn’t have a mask at all and got 1,000 individual viruses in me.

I don’t know, I’m not a biologist, I just don’t get how everything is constantly framed as all or nothing. it doesn’t make sense to me.

What games have you played in the last 365 days that stand out to you as the most memorable experiences?

I think the most common answer is going to be Tears of the Kingdom, and that is one for me that stands out for sure, but I will try to add some more unique inputs as well. Many are games that came out longer than a year ago, but i didnt get around to playing until more recently....
