What is intelligence?

Even if we don’t know what it is with certainty, it’s valid to say that something isn’t intelligence. For example, a rock isn’t intelligent. I think everyone would agree with that.

Despite that, LLMs are starting to blur the lines and making us wonder if what matters of intelligence is really the process or the result.

A LLM will give you much better results in many areas that are currently used to evaluate human intelligence.

For me, humans are a black box. I give them inputs and they give me outputs. They receive inputs from reality and they generate outputs. I’m not aware of the “intelligent” process of other humans. How can I tell they are intelligent if the only perception I have are their inputs and outputs? Maybe all we care about are the outputs and not the process.

If there was a LLM capable of simulating a close friend of yours perfectly, would you say the LLM is not intelligent? Would it matter?

platypus_plumba , (edited )

Things we know so far:

  • Humans can train LLMs with new data, which means they can acquire knowledge.
  • LLMs have been proven to apply knowledge, they are acing examns that most humans wouldn’t dream of even understanding.
  • We know multi-modal is possible, which means these models can acquire skills.
  • We already saw that these skills can be applied. If it wasn’t possible to apply their outputs, we wouldn’t use them.
  • We have seen models learn and generate strategies that humans didn’t even conceive. We’ve seen them solve problems that were unsolvable to human intelligence.

… What’s missing here in that definition of intelligence? The only thing missing is our willingness to create a system that can train and update itself, which is possible.

platypus_plumba ,

Is an octopus intelligent? Can an octopus build an airplane?

Why do you expect these models to have human skills if they are not humans?

How can they build a house if they don’t even have vision or a physical body? Can a paralized human that can only hear and speak build a house? Is that human intelligent?

This is clearly not human intelligence, it clearly lacks human skills. Does it mean it isn’t intelligent and it has no skills?

platypus_plumba , (edited )

You keep asking questions like “can a model build a house” but keep ignoring questions like “can an octopus build a house”. Then asking “can a model learn in seconds how to escape from a complex enclosure” and then ignoring “can a newborn human baby do that?”

Can an octopus write a poem? Can a baby write an essay? Can an adult human speak every human language, including fictional languages?

Just because it isn’t as intelligent as a human doesn’t mean this isn’t some type if intelligence.

Go and check what we call AI in videogames. Do you think that’s a simulated human? Go see what we’ve been calling AI in chess. Is that a simulated human being playing chess? No.

We’ve been calling Artificial intelligence things that are waaaaaay dumber than GPTs for decades. Even in the academia. Suddenly a group of people decided “artificial intelligence must be equal to human intelligence”. Nope.

Intelligence doesn’t need to be the same type of human intelligence.

Imagine the whole world looking at Hitler exterminating jews in 1945 and doing nothing about it. That’s what’s happening today.

platypus_plumba ,

Damn.

platypus_plumba ,

Didn’t read the article but I agree. A kid thst age shouldn’t have a defined gender or sexuality.

My niece seemed to be lesbian for some years, and we were ok with it. She recently said she actually likes boys.

Nobody pushed her to do anything or say anything, or represent any political group or social cause. She chose by herself 100% of the time. Nobody guided her or said anything to her. Her mother just listened and said “whatever makes you happy”.

I can’t believe this woman is involving her child in politics like this.

platypus_plumba ,

If she has the initiative, sure. In this case it was the mother who chose to take her kids there to say to everyone “Hey look, my kids are Trans, look at them”.

Just let them grow and label themselves. At that age these things are not written in stone.

platypus_plumba ,

I didn’t have to read the article to see that this mother told her kids what to do and how to feel.

platypus_plumba , (edited )

Just because you’re using the same word (involve) it doesn’t mean it has the same semantics.

She is exposing and labeling her children herself. She’s probably telling her kids what to feel and what they are. At that age a kid isn’t like “Mother I have become transexual, we need to fight the Republicans, bring me to the nearest politician”.

Don’t get your kid involved in politics, don’t tell your kids they are transgender, don’t you dare giving them surgery for their gender… let them grow and figure it out themselves. Just be supportive and loving. You can fight for them, but don’t get them involved in something that isn’t necessarily permanent to them.

platypus_plumba ,

So her kids read the news and said “mother, we need to act, take me there so we can teach this politician a lesson”?

platypus_plumba , (edited )

Yeha, but how do you know if it is something permanent or not for the kid? You don’t know, at that age they are fluid in these regards. So why frame them as “transexual” if they like having long hair or play with “girly” toys.

When I was a kid I thought I was a girl, I would always refer to myself with femenine terminology until I was like 7. If my parents pushed the idea of being transexual instead of letting me figure out that I was actually a boy who likes girls, I’d probably be very fucked up today.

I’m really against telling a kid what they are or allowing them to change their bodies permanently. Once they turn 18, they’ll be able to make these choices with a better understanding and perspective. A 10yo kid doesn’t know shit, they barely understand the world (in general), that’s why they can’t make choices like having sex with adults, getting pregnant, having tattoos, consuming drugs or alcohol, gambling… the list goes on. They aren’t mentally prepared for these decisions.

I understand that it is important to preach love to others, but don’t solidify these ideas in your kids just to make a political point. They may feel later that they can’t change because they became the face of this issue.

Don’t tell a kid what they are, just tell them they can be whatever they want to be, but permanent choices only at 18, once they have more perspective and understanding. That’s it.

platypus_plumba ,

It’s a kid. Do you think a kid knows what transexual means without an adult telling them? Or what a politician or laws mean? Or that the politician was going to be there? Did the kid tell the mother what to say?

Please explain to me how this could have happened, a likely scenario, in which the mother didn’t push this on the child.

platypus_plumba ,

So, the kid read the newspaper and asked to go there?

platypus_plumba ,

For me the problem is that parents can sabotage their questioning period by steering them. Just let them be. For me, this mother taking her kids to something political like this is steering and not letting the kid figure things out themselves.

platypus_plumba ,

Stakes are real, but still, don’t use children for politics.

People understand what a kid is without having to expose them to the world as trans at such a young age.

Did they really change this politician’s mind?

platypus_plumba ,

The problem is that the amount of population doesn’t match the way we live. You could create any ideal society and say that overpopulation isn’t the issue, or create an underpopulated society and say the way we live isn’t the issue.

You’re saying “we just need to fix the biggest issues of our society in in order for overpopulation to be a non-issue, easy!”

platypus_plumba ,

I was thinking exactly this but with the Bible. Not because I like the Bible but because I’d love to see how AI interprets one of the most important books in human history.

But yeha, the Silmarillion is basically a Bible from another universe.

If we had a single time zone, we couldn’t use “am” or “pm”.

These mean ante-meridiem and post-meridiem. So, before midday and after midday. There would be no concept of midday linked to hours that could apply to all locations.

The most apropiate would be talking in 24h format. It wouldn’t bother me if someone said I have to wake up at 13 and finish my job at 21. These are just numbers.

But yeha, it’s still a bad idea because people would have to change calendars constantly because of daylight savings.

platypus_plumba ,

Finally, good news. I can’t believe we need to go to court just to be allowed to have encrypted conversations. It’s MY conversation and MY data.

platypus_plumba ,

Did you read the article? This isn’t for weapons or harm.

An OpenAI spokesperson said it maintains a ban against using its tools to build weapons, harm people or destroy property. It amended the military ban to allow for projects that are still “very much aligned with what we want to see in the world,” Anna Makanju, OpenAI’s vice president for global affairs, said last month.

But yeha… there’s nothing stopping them from changing that stance in the future. But they haven’t done it yet. The article is rage bait.

platypus_plumba , (edited )

I think it is because of the bizarre way the towers collapsed. Just like a controlled demolition looks like. The way the WTC7, that did not get hit by any plane, also collapsed. Supposedly because it caught on fire too.

I think this is really the cause of suspicion, it was just pretty bizarre. A lot of people came forward to explain that a fire couldn’t brind such a massive structure down.

Also, the US is known for doing weird shit behind everyone’s backs. The CIA is constantly doing shit like taking governments down or causing a drug crisis in black neighborhoods. You gotta admit the US agencies are sneaky in general, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were actually responsible for the twin towers. There’s no evidence but I’m pretty sure the CIA was somehow involved with the Nord Stream pipeline

platypus_plumba ,

I think the biggest evidence of structural damage and not a controlled demolition is the lack of explosion sounds. This is what a controlled demolition sounds like, but witnesses didn’t hear or feel explosions:

more demolitions:

platypus_plumba ,

That’s an awful video, he didn’t talk technically about anything.

platypus_plumba ,

I’m not saying it is a conspiracy, I was just explaining why people think it is.

But let’s assume they did place the explosives, they wouldn’t have to be in the place of impact, they would be located in many places, just like a controlled demolition.

Again, not saying that’s what happened, just saying that the US is constantly doing sneaky stuff under the covers, which is why most conspiracies don’t seem far fetched.

Do you really think it is insane to believe the US made up the moon landing as a propaganda campaign against Russia? I believe we went to the moon, but if they came up with official documents saying we didn’t, I would be like “welp, US doing US things I guess”

platypus_plumba ,

If you want to take this to a philosophical extreme so you understand my argument, is it possible to ever know anything with certainty?

What do you call evidence? Photos, videos, testimony… Do I personally trust in that evidence? Yes, it would be very unlikely to be fake, but many unlikely conspiracies have surfaced in the past.
