I had one of these. I sold it 10 years ago for about double what they cost new when I bought it. For a period of time they couldn’t give these things away and I’m fairly certain I bought mine open box at MicroCenter.

I cannot understand why news organizations and large companies wouldn’t want to run official communication through Mastodon. I understand the network effect but allowing your employees to create a Twitter account is a bit like letting them officially do business with their personal AOL email account. I don’t think Mastodon is even close to perfect but it gives the publisher a huge amount of control.

olympicyes ,

Wasn’t there an article recently about how fines are fees?

olympicyes ,

For the most part I agree with you but generally want controls remapped to match current conventions. A lot of PS2 games are hard to play because they were making button layouts up as they went and it interferes with my muscle memory!

olympicyes ,

I used to insist on playing games inverted but at some point I switched and now I feel your pain!

olympicyes ,

Thanks for clarifying. I misread that because it’s so unusual! Maybe they were trying to make it “fun”.

olympicyes ,

I know that’s a joke but even Apple offers that in iCloud. I for sure use different passwords but forget that obscured email is even an option.

olympicyes ,

For iPhone users, you can press a long click to preview. I’m using Voyager as a PWA and so far it’s better than all the native apps I’ve tried. I don’t really use Lemmy on the desktop because the url isn’t muscle memory yet.

olympicyes ,

My understanding is that the result of the LinkedIn case is that you can scrape data that you have permission to view but not to access data that you were not intended to. The end result that ClickWrap agreements are unenforceable.

olympicyes ,

He also fails to recognize how intimidating his height can be to people. I’m not surprised the door dash driver reacted the way he did. This kid is a menace.

olympicyes ,

When my daughter was 7 or 8 years old, I caught her answering questions on quora on topics that she knew nothing about. Something to keep in mind.

olympicyes ,

She was answering questions about ear piercings which she’d never had, but yes you’re probably right!

olympicyes ,

I can tell you’re young and single by the price of your subscription.

olympicyes ,

FWIW there’s an iOS app called Amplosion that does just that.

olympicyes ,

You are taking support to mean tech support. OP meant support as in rah rah I’m cheering for you. I’m that context, I have no idea what message the original post is supposed to convey.

olympicyes ,

This is the first positive press piece about EV batteries that I’ve ever seen.

olympicyes ,

Leafs are popular in southeast Alaska because there is nowhere to drive. They import used Leafs and use them as oversized golf carts.

olympicyes ,

I’m using Unifi. They are OK.

olympicyes ,

I also use Unifi but it’s worth mentioning that Unifi Protect (current offering) requires an online Unifi account and a Unifi DVR, whereas the older Unifi Video required a local account and could be run on your own hardware. I like that my videos are not stored in the cloud, but I don’t know enough about how Unifi handles security to confirm that they couldn’t allow another user to stream video off your hardware directly. I’m not too concerned about the risk because I just use these for my front yard and it’s pretty convenient.

olympicyes ,

I’d add smart TVs to this category too. I had a device get compromised on my network (QNAP NAS, not recommended), so I locked my network down pretty hard (UPNP partly the culprit). My Samsung TV began having problems. After a few rounds with customer support I realized I was running into a problem with a feature, not a bug. Then I disconnected my screens from the internet and switched to Apple TV. I figure at least then there is a little pushback to the data scraping. And FYI I saw the same thing with Amazon Fire that you did.

olympicyes ,

Our cameras point outside but the microphones are so retry sensitive and my office window is near two of them. I’m sure someone could hear my side of a phone call.

olympicyes ,

RSTP is the streaming cam protocol. It shows up as a url with rstp:// instead of https://. You can type that url into streaming video apps like VLC (video lan client) and watch your videos with no configuration. There is no security on the feed so you have to secure your network instead.

olympicyes ,

I know there was an issue a while ago that you couldn’t connect directly to your cameras using iOS via the LAN. It had to go online. I remember now a hastily rolled out patch in response to a data breach. So to answer your question, I’m not 100% sure. I use my cameras like you do but this is an important topic for someone who doesn’t want their system online in any capacity.

The multimillionaires that are supporting the union don’t are doing so because either A) it’s the right thing to do, or B) because the studios may inadvertently trigger the destruction of Hollywood because of greed. Whether because of altruism or mutual self-interest, it’s the right thing to do.

olympicyes ,

“Cancel culture” is a catch-all slur. You can tell it’s effective because of how you phrased your post instead of considering who is being “canceled” and the reason for it. Bad guys are trying to catch a free pass by highlighting less serious offenses and calling it the same thing.

olympicyes ,

That assumes that all actors and screenwriters make more in a year than most in a lifetime. In reality they work from job to job, paycheck to paycheck. I know a few people who work in production in Hollywood. They tell me that working on a tv show used to mean steady employment, but now can mean just 4 weeks of work for writers and creative types.

olympicyes ,

What do you think the function of a union is?

olympicyes ,

It’s not even clear that it’s illegal to scrape publicly available data, so I don’t know what the TOS would be enforcing.

olympicyes ,

FireWire was legitimately superior at the time, particularly for video transfer.

Apple shares fall after China reportedly bans iPhone use by government officials | Apple (www.theguardian.com)

Apple shares fall after China reportedly bans iPhone use by government officials | Apple::The move suggests that China, which is one of Apple’s biggest markets, is unwilling to spare any US company in fight to boost homegrown technology

olympicyes ,

If the corporation buys back all the stock then who owns Apple?

olympicyes ,

I’d assume that everyone subscribed to news is also subscribed to worldnews. I see a lot of “cross posts” with very low engagement.

More than $35 million has been stolen from over 150 victims since December — ‘nearly every victim’ was a LastPass user::Security experts believe some of the LastPass password vaults stolen during a security breach last year have now been cracked open following a string of cryptocurrency heists

Not sure about that software specifically but most yubikey 2FA implementations allow you to set up more than one key. That way you don’t lose access if you lose your key. I personally have three keys.

olympicyes ,

Geez I do this in 1 password.

olympicyes ,

I never considered it because the game streaming is still pretty new and I’ve never forgiven Google for killing the news reader.

Gov. Whitmer says 'it's time' for guaranteed paid family, medical leave in Michigan (www.detroitnews.com)

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called on Michigan lawmakers Wednesday to give all workers in the state “breathing room” by creating a new program to offer them paid family and medical leave, a proposal that some worry could amount to a tax on Michigan’s businesses and workers....

olympicyes ,

I disagree with this law proposal only because I think this should be a federal law instead of a state law. I’d be concerned that businesses would leave the state instead of pay family leave. It’s a disgrace that the USS is the only industrialized country that doesn’t offer this. It’s considered inhumare to take a puppy away from its mother before 8 weeks but humans only need 2 weeks?

olympicyes ,

Sometimes it works. I guess the precedent is the Massachusetts health care law and Obamacare. I’d love to see anti-abortion republicans railing against mothers staying with their babies.

olympicyes ,

Leafs have problems with battery life but they are popular in Southeast Alaska because it’s not really possible to drive very far. They import them used from the lower 48.

olympicyes ,

If you read the article you’d see that he said that in the context of buying a Chevy Suburban in 2030. Suburbans start at $77k, so I don’t think his comment is that out of line.

olympicyes ,

If you knew that he was referring to the purchase of a $80k Suburban in 2030 would that change your assessment?

Silicon Valley elites revealed as buyers of $800m of land to build utopian city (www.theguardian.com)

After weeks of local speculation, the purchasers of 55,000 acres of northern California land have been revealed. The group Flannery Associates – backed by a cohort of Silicon Valley investors – has quietly purchased $800m worth of agricultural and empty land, the New York Times has reported. Their goal is to build a utopian...

olympicyes ,

I’ve never seen “dis” used, and even if we were using Latin prefixes wouldn’t that mean “benetopia” would be as correct as “eutopia”? It’s pretty clear that OP spelled it wrong which was very funny in context.

X glitch wipes out most pictures and links tweeted before December 2014 (www.theverge.com)

X glitch wipes out most pictures and links tweeted before December 2014::Ellen’s famous ‘most retweeted’ selfie from the 2014 Oscars has had its image restored, but most old tweets have broken short links instead of the media or links that should be there.

olympicyes ,

Tweets were 140 characters including urls to photos. It means the photo or url linked no longer works because users would shorten links instead of the full image url.

olympicyes ,

I guess what Lemmy has in common with Reddit is that nobody reads the article. This happened in India.

Read the article and tell me what’s wrong with your post in one sentence.
