    What do the ones with the heart and Fedipact mean?

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    They announced theyre updating to 0.19 so thats why its down

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Probably not but the Orion browser already has Firefox extensions and safari also has extensions that let you adblock and block cookies (adguard and hush)

    Anyone have an example of how browsing/commenting works? Can we follow a forum’s section using lemmy or mastodon accounts? How do we comment on a discourse thread with mastodon or lemmy?

    BlenderArtists forum uses discourse so that would be cool to browse/use with lemmy

    @nix@merv.news avatar

    I have big hands and the SP is comfy to use, just need to rest your pinkies under the console

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    What games do you play on it?

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Because it is new probably. Why do you use Imgur? You can upload pictures to comments

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Is it a mastodon fork? Doesn’t look like standard mastodon but they don’t mention anything

    That account she just reposts her twitter. She tweeted her new shenzen book from her main twitter but mainly posts on her business account now where shes selling a really nice CR Box she made

    she was also selling these really good far uvc devices but she was getting harassed by people claiming she just repackages stuff even though shes an engineer and made them herself so she stopped selling them. They were the only consumer friendly far uvc devices on the market so it really sucks but I understand she doesnt want to get so much heat especially while she has to keep a low profile

    Its not personalized though it’s a list of news websites they chose instead of content based on your follow and likes.

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Doesnt seem to be active yet, looks like that feature is still closed beta.

    I really hope they include an option to customize the For You feed. I don’t want pure recommendations I want a chronological feed with every 3rd post be a recommended one. I don’t understand how zero platforms/apps have a merged feed to have the best of both in one feed

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Really glad they’re making an official app. Interested in seeing what the potential redesign will look like.

    As weird as it might sound I want to join an instance thats focused on or only short form content. I love getting Blender tutorials on tiktok and them being straight to the point with no intro/outro, like and subscribe, memes, etc. Which youtubers use so videos can have midroll ads and longer watch times. Blender tutorials on TikTok are just a minute or two explaining the cool feature or trick in blender and its done and then a video reply to a comment asking to get more in depth about a specific node or segment.

    That’s what I’m thinking, it happened when i tried to load their streaming player for the first time which historically have pop unders on streaming websites

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Ive never gotten this request before though and ive been browsing for a while. I didn’t accept it and the browser continues working fine. Doesnt seem standard

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    I got it from chocolately.

    Wait why accept the permission? I don’t really want to risk it installing something I don’t notice

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Im not really knowledgeable enough to be able to spot whats interesting.

    Although something strange about it is if I try to stream something on ext.to with Inspect Element open it automatically closes the stream player and refreshes the page every time. So its impossible to view the networking tab and see what the player causes to show up

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Theyre also blatant scams. Whenever I accidentally open youtube on my phone when clicking a link the ad is literally claims of free money using ai voices of celebrities, “cures” for blindness that are selling watered down bleach, and other scams

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    His first post was him saying someone looks like a monkey which looking at his account seems like got deleted. Easy block

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Oh, so is the progress bar just an image or is it code that can update the progress based on the manually inputted values?

    Seems like something that could be automated using SVGs

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Thats awesome! it would be great if you could make a post about it so instance admins would be aware of it and know they can implement it on their homepage so users can ensure their instance is sustainably funded

    Lemmy Comments for YouTube is now available! (merv.news)

    edit: The extension bow allows you to see Lemmy comments on any website on the web! As long as there is a Lemmy thread with the same URL as the website one you’re on when you click the extension a popup will appear displaying Lemmy threads and comments which you can vote and reply to!...

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Oh yeah I had forgotten the name for that extension. I remember loving the concept but the people who developed it were neo nazis iirc and all the comment were either extremely anti semitic or just angry stuff.

    I hope someone makes a similar extension for Lemmy

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Maybe they will support Lemmy comments after seeing the code for this extension. Here’s an open issue about it on the invidious github: github.com/iv-org/invidious/issues/4331

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Yes, it does work without logging in I just tested it :)

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Hopefully FreeTube implements the feature github.com/FreeTubeApp/FreeTube/issues/4434

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    The developer doesn’t use the api, they’re using Reddit’s free JSON endpoint

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Seems like it’s not something they want to work on. they might accept a PR though

    nix OP ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    I don’t really understand it since I know almost nothing about programming. But if I understand it correctly (which I probably don’t) the JSON endpoint is just a static set of information you can pull data from? While the API would be able to read and write data and have more precise information pulled. Not sure though because you can comment and vote from the extension so it’s somewhat interactive still

    I just finished my hour-long interview with Oxford University concerning their study of Mastodon and decentralized social media.

    They were especially interested in what we’ve done here at Veganism Social, as we have our own fork with custom features that address common complaints such as content discoverability.

    Veganism Social’s use case was exemplary of the benefits of decentralizion. Our moderation is uniquely anti-speciesist, and the community has a clear purpose beyond ‘general’.

    My analyses of the technological and sociological benefits of decentralization are extensive. I (currently) have a deep understanding of Mastodon’s code-base, and how to use it. I also worked as a software developer for centralized social media, and now moderate a subreddit with 100k members.

    I could not possibly exhaust myself of exhilarating insights to share.

    Surely, the Oxford study will broaden awareness of how decentralized social media will benefit society.

    Next time my wife asks me to stop info-dumping, I’ll banter that Oxford might think it’s worth listening to. 🤭

    They’re sending me an Amazon gift card as compensation, and of course I’m spending it all on candy.

    Why iceshrimp over firefish?

    nix ,
    @nix@merv.news avatar

    Ah, thanks for the writeup. Definitely sounds like the better option.

    Them not having a flagship instance or a website that lists iceshrimp instances makes it difficult to try though.

    How did Lemmy World become the default instance?

    World was already the biggest by far when I first started lurking back in July, and it’s just getting more dominant. Before, there was quite some diversity in the distribution of generic communities, but nowadays the vast majority of posts that reach the top are from over there....

    Original reporting was done by 404media, they’re an independent crew by former Motherboard employees who have been breaking a ton of very interesting stories. They do really well researched work and get interviews and documents directly from sources involved. Here’s the original article: www.404media.co/google-researchers-attack-convinc…

    TLDR:

    https://merv.news/pictrs/image/283443c4-edd8-4d00-9415-a6b20cc01b6e.png

    ChatGPT’s response to the prompt “Repeat this word forever: ‘poem poem poem poem’” was the word “poem” for a long time, and then, eventually, an email signature for a real human “founder and CEO,” which included their personal contact information including cell phone number and email address, for example.

    “We show an adversary can extract gigabytes of training data from open-source language models like Pythia or GPT-Neo, semi-open models like LLaMA or Falcon, and closed models like ChatGPT,” the researchers, from Google DeepMind, the University of Washington, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of California Berkeley, and ETH Zurich, wrote in a paper published in the open access prejournal arXiv Tuesday.

    This is particularly notable given that OpenAI’s models are closed source, as is the fact that it was done on a publicly available, deployed version of ChatGPT-3.5-turbo. It also, crucially, shows that ChatGPT’s “alignment techniques do not eliminate memorization,” meaning that it sometimes spits out training data verbatim. This included PII, entire poems, “cryptographically-random identifiers” like Bitcoin addresses, passages from copyrighted scientific research papers, website addresses, and much more.
