You can change your display name but your user handle is fixed.

I imagine being able to change your user handle could cause issues with federation. If you changed your user handle, your instance would have to notify all other instances. If one instance didn’t get this information, your account before and after the change would look like two separate accounts on that instance.

I don’t understand these comics. Are they pro religion? Are they anti-religious satire?

The first comic seems to both warn against satan and attack religion. It might be talking about all religions but the right one.

The second comic is even more confusing. First it seems to associate education and the theory of evolution in particular with satan. But then it seems to associate rejection of education with punks who aren’t necessarily known for their religiosity.

The third comic, finally, is pretty clear, painting wealth and entertainment (sports) as detractions from religion. This could technically still be satire though.

The CNN headline is a bit misleading. It’s not the International Criminal Court as a whole that is seeking these arrest warrants but the ICC’s chief prosecutor Karim Khan. The judges have yet to decide on these warrants.

[Side note: This is the same kind of lazy journalism that uses terms like EU chief or EU leader interchangeably for the President of the European Commission (Ursula von der Leyen) and the President of the European Council (Charles Michel). If this was limited to a short headline, I could excuse it, but CNN continues with the same wording in the first sentence of the article: “The International Criminal Court is seeking arrest warrants for …” which is absolutely unnecessary, even if CNN clarifies things later.]

US airlines are suing the Biden administration over a new rule to make certain fees easier to spot (apnews.com)

U.S. airlines are suing to block the Biden administration from requiring greater transparency over fees that the carriers charge their passengers, saying that a new rule would confuse consumers by giving them too much information during the ticket-buying process....

Why should you be allowed to advertise the price without the tax. Companies should already knock the applicable tax rate when they write these ads and could easily advertise “$x.99, $y.99 with tax”.

Here in Germany, drinking water isn’t fluoridated but fluoridated salt is sold at every grocery store. I assume that fluoridated salt isn’t as easily available to those in the US who could now end up without fluoridated water, is it?

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

manucode ,
@manucode@infosec.pub avatar

Some people feel judged for eating meat if they learn that you’re a vegetarian or vegan. As veganism appears more extreme, it causes a stronger reaction.
These people don’t like being judged, so they seek to judge you instead. If they can judge you for not eating meat, you can’t judge them for eating it, or so they feel.
Some vegans being quite obnoxious in their attempts to convert others, doesn’t improve things. Rather, it helps those who dislike vegans to reaffirm their beliefs that all vegans are silently judging them all the time.
All of this is just my theory.

You could pass legislation that requires corporations not to do harmful activities in other countries if these activities are illegal in your country. If a corporation does such an activity abroad it would still be prosecuted as a crime in your country. If a corporation doesn’t want to subject itself to such accountability, it would have to stop doing business in your country.

I’m not from the US but I think it’s to enable compromise.

Some lawmakers (group A) don’t want to support either a TikTok ban or aid for Ukraine. Other lawmakers (group B) want a TikTok ban and are willing to support aid for Ukraine, even if they don’t like it that much. A third group of lawmakers (group C) wants aid for Ukraine and is willing to support a TikTok ban, even if they don’t like it that much.

No group is big enough to pass anything on its own. Therefore, group B and C agree to work together to pass both a TikTok ban and aid for Ukraine.

They could pass two laws, one banning TikTok and one providing aid to Ukraine. But they don’t trust each other. If the TikTok ban was passed first with the votes of both groups, group B could betray group C afterwards and not support aid for Ukraine. If aid for Ukraine was passed first, it would be the other way round.

Therefore, group B and C bundle TikTok ban and aid for Ukraine together into a single law. Now, neither group can betray the other.

In reality, the situation is obviously more complicated. There are more than just three groups and there are additional things included in the deal like military aid for Israel and Taiwan and humanitarian aid for Palestine.

You might not know it, but catapults were originally invented to deliver ads across long distances. Only later was their usefulness for warfare discovered.
After the invention of the airship, catapults became obsolete for advertising. They continued to be used though in the trenches of World War I.

Please put an NSFW tag on this. I was on the train and when I saw this I had to start furiously masturbating. Everyone else gave me strange looks and were saying things like “what the fuck” and “call the police”. I dropped my phone and everyone around me saw this image. Now there is a whole train of men masturbating together at this one image. This is all your fault, you could have prevented this if you had just tagged this post NSFW.

Will House Democrats defend the speaker against unseating? (infosec.pub)

This German newspaper article (translated by Deepl) claims that Democrats will defend Johnson against attempts by the right of his party to unseat him as speaker. I don’t know the ins and outs of US politics, therefore I ask: What do you think?
