What do you mean by evolve? Like, a creature that eats ships? The water and creatures eventually erode the ship to nothing. It’s not like Superior is some small lake that is going to dry up, it’s literally one of the largest lakes on the planet

Wow, this article is mediocre (editing this comment on an ongoing basis as I look at the author’s links. Edit: it took 25 minutes but I think I’m done). Here is the case against the case against the case against smartphones:

  1. Suicide rates falling in Europe does not mean mental health is improving. It could mean improved weapons storage, improved OD mitigation, etc. The author acknowledges later in the article that anxiety and depression are getting worse in the “Western world” yet one of their first arguments is about suicide rates declining in Europe.
  2. An R^2 of .15 is actually not that bad
  3. Small sample sizes don’t give you bad data
  4. One of the studies “debunking” the change in mental health is about pressure in school, not social media. It’s true they found no change in self-reported overall wellbeing but to quote that research article “The different trends in psychosomatic complaints and life satisfaction reinforce the idea that mental well-being is a multidimensional construct and that different components of mental well-being can show different trajectories and may have differential susceptibilities.”
  5. Another “debunking” is about internet adoption rates globally (which, spoiler alert, is not the same as time spent on social media)
  6. After all of that, the article closes by saying “but I think smartphones are probably still bad for mental health, just look at me as an example.” Then why cite a bunch of people trying to debunk that? Especially if you’re going to close on how you disagree with that research… in their words “In our conversation, Przybylski said he doubted that using social media shortens people’s attention spans. To me, this is a bit like doubting that chewing broken glass causes oral discomfort.” ok but you just said how great his research was?
  7. The article talks about supposed “diagnostic inflation” of mental health, meaning people are being diagnosed for milder symptoms. Yet, the only link is to an article criticizing the DSM-V. It’s not a study, it’s one dude’s opinion piece. Also, the other pieces in the main article talk a lot about non-Americans… who probably use the ICD and not the DSM

Definitely the person. If I saved my cat, people would call me crazy. Mostly because I don’t have a cat and that would be a dick move of me to save something imaginary.

Because the BJP is a Hindu Nationalist party, no? That’s like someone refusing to vote for a Republican in the USA because Christian nationalism goes against their beliefs. Doesn’t sound onion-y to me.

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I think it’s sort of a way to save face. “Look, we responded!” When it was honestly a pretty low-level response. Almost like a half assed way of honoring the US request that they not respond

The US government under Obama and Biden has taken a lot less crap from these for profit schools. Although this is separate from Dept of Ed stuff

I thought she mainly worked in religious schools? Probably still non-profits

Reddit Is Taking Over Google (tech.slashdot.org)

Reddit, Quora, and other internet forums that have climbed up through the traditional set of Google links. Data analysis from Semrush, which predicts traffic based on search ranking, shows that traffic to Reddit has climbed at an impressive clip since August 2023. Semrush estimated that Reddit had over 132 million visitors in...

@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I was wondering if the bump was universal or if Google just thought I always wanted to see Reddit results based on my browsing history.

Also, every time Quora comes up it amazes me that it overtook Yahoo Answers. It’s like Tik Tok vs Vine

Was it ever high brow? I never really noticed it until the past few years

Louisiana lawmakers vote to remove lunch breaks for child workers, cut unemployment benefits (www.nola.com)

A Louisiana House committee voted Thursday to repeal a law requiring employers to give child workers lunch breaks and to cut unemployment benefits — part of a push by Republicans to remove constraints on employers and reduce aid for injured and unemployed workers....

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

First-term state Rep. Roger Wilder, R-Denham Springs, who sponsored the child labor measure and owns Smoothie King franchises across the Deep South, said he filed the bill in part because children want to work without having to take lunch breaks. He questioned why Louisiana has the requirement while other states where he owns Smoothie King locations, such as Mississippi, don’t have them, and criticized people who have questioned the bill’s purpose.
“The wording is ‘We’re here to harm children.’ Give me a break," he said. "These are young adults.”

O_O

Edit: you heard it here first, one day there will be a news article about this guy flirting with underage workers (possibly something darker)

Weird coincidence, I’m in the middle of this rn. Haven’t played Starfield but this is one of my favorite Bethesda titles outside of Doom and Wolfenstein

jeffw , (edited )
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

The reboots, they’ve owned the rights (or maybe ZeniMax technically?) of both for over a decade. I think id was bought out. So the Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein 2014 games and newer games are Bethesda published.

Edit: ZeniMax bought id in 2009, so Doom and Doom Eternal, as well as Wolfenstein New Order, New Colossus and the two spinoffs (Youngblood, Old Blood) are Bethesda-published.

Fuck me, pie charts with 50 segments??? Maybe they look weird because pie charts suck if you have more than 2-3 things to show

And the rest on the page don’t display well on mobile

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I think posting is probably the biggest thing you can do to grow the community. That and word of mouth - tell people about the fediverse.

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

No, I’m just here to sit in my armchair and judge other people’s design choices.

But on a serious note, I wouldn’t even know how. I barely played around in R but the only semi-legit data viz stuff I ever did was in Tableau. And that was only with static data

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I think engagement is often driven when people see active communities though. Can’t have that without posts in communities. Sort of a chicken and egg thing ig.

I post in some communities where I’m the only person posting for weeks and nobody comments. I post in others where I’m just a contributor and people engage in the comments.

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Still look less awkward than pie charts. And yeah, I wouldn’t use a log scale for a viz unless it’s going into a professional publication

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

while both highly uncertain and ambitious, would be technically possible from an engineering perspective

The thing about most shelters is they are filled with mutts. Yes, breeds have traits. But with mutts, visual breed identification is notoriously difficult. Best to go to a shelter and meet with a dog to feel it out.

And don’t believe whatever label they slap on it. They are guessing (no fault on them, they gotta write something down). My recent adoption was labeled as a high-energy breed and he’s pretty chill. I almost skipped over him because I was afraid I couldn’t handle the breed that they thought he was/what he looked like.

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

This argument pretends that you can’t support shutting down the mills while adopting. It also ignores the stray population and revoking of adult dogs, which is the biggest burden on shelters.

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

FWIW, this is anecdotal evidence based on my recent adoption but in chatting with staff, that wave is largely over.

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks, they really are family members! It was hard because we only had him about 4 years. It’s hard no matter how old they are but we had to put him down when he was only 10. In those last few days his quality of life totally changed though. Luckily we had like 6 months warning and he lived towards the long end of the vet’s expectations given the size of the mass they had found.

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

It’s funny, the shelter near me just says “staffordshire mix” on most dogs, which is kind of the opposite of what I’ve heard shelters do, like you said.

jeffw OP ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Or not even the lifestyle but the dog’s life. Frenchies are the most popular dog in the USA despite the fact that they have terrible health issues and often need surgery just to breathe right.

I believe it’s going to a shareholder vote

jeffw OP , (edited )
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not defending Musk but I think your figures might be wrong. Are you citing revenue or profit? Revenue last year was way more than 15 billion and profit was way less

Edit: actually, GAAP income was 15 billion but that just open up a whole nerdy accounting argument about GAAP principles and how the US does things differently from others.

Also, he would make the 50 billion over a decade or so, meaning it’s about 1/3rd of profits annually, assuming they maintain profitability close to what they had last year.

Regardless, it’s an insane compensation
