Do you suppose finding “blame” is the key component to finding the “fix”?

What happens to my Corpse if I die in a Forest?

I was just randomly checking out what Funerals costs and was shocked how expensive it was! €3.500 to €5.500! I live in north Germany, and we have here some very deep Woods. So I was thinking what would happen if I just die there. Let’s say no one ever finds me. Are Animals just going to eat me, and will I just be gone in a...

isles ,

I’ve never been, but the Black Forest has two segements, 394,000 ha (1521 sq mi) and 375,000 ha (1441 sq mi). Those seem big enough to become lost in.

Tech companies have learned that it behooves them to collect as much data as they can, even if they don’t have a present use for it. And with AI being so data-hungry, it appears to be paying off.

isles ,

Did you know there are more people in the world than Trump supporters and Biden supporters?

isles ,

assume that literally no one has any fucking clue what they’re talking about and everyone is lying

I’m not sure this is a new development.

isles ,

(Not important, but the M in LLM is “Model”)

Here’s where it feels like pantomime - the comment above you says this

The 2020 election cycle saw $5.7 billion in political spending on the presidency, and $8.7 billion in the congressional races.

Princeton showed policy decision is basically made by wealthy donors. The wealthy are holding the levers by which they WOULD be taxed additionally and are not currently. Polls are virtue signaling, call me when the tax code changes.

isles ,

It’s not just the prices, people are lazy.

Or they just demand good value for their service. Netflix hugely curtailed piracy in their early days. Same with Valve’s Steam.

isles ,

Paid time off is not a guaranteed/protected benefit in the US. Even getting paid for the hours you work is lightly protected.

isles ,

Awesome to see, good luck to you!

If you’re looking for tips, I’d try to set up Prowlarr first if you intend to use it, it’ll save some reconfiguration down the line.

Though I don’t find anything as complex as mounting and permissions in the *arrs, haha.

But my favorite part about tinkering with home servers is just learning a little at a time, expanding naturally. It’s easy to find guides that are the “ultimate, best server configs”, but unless you understand what benefits they’re offering, you can’t really determine what fits best for YOUR needs.

I started with CouchPotato on Windows years ago and now have *arrs running through docker on headless boxes and keep adding on fun services.

Give people who target civilians what they demand

But I don’t want to give Israel anything.

[Question] Phone for custom rom

Hi all! I’m needing to replace my aging Razer Phone 2 (I know lol) and I want to wean off of Google a bit. I’m hoping to buy a mid range phone, no more than 500 Eur and install a custom rom (preferably Lineage). The officially supported phones on the Lineage page are a bit on the older side, but do you guys have any...

isles ,

Meanwhile, I have a Oneplus 7t and can’t find support for custom roms. I was actually considering a Pixel with GrapheneOS.

Another question about used hard drives

Did decide to go the used drive route just saving up and waiting for the right deal from a good seller. I did notice on eBay specifically that some sellers have tested drives for a great price per tb with a shit seller’s warranty (30 days to 1 year) but offer insurance for a significantly longer length of time for a few more...

isles ,

I just bought a few 18tb from serverpartsdeals (via eBay) and they’re working well for now. YMMV of course.

isles ,

you get into a state where militarily no one can do anything (except wage a war in a country that doesn’t have nuclear weapons)

ok, I got it. Give every country nuclear weapons and then there is nowhere to wage war.

isles ,

humans are really bad at caring for unproductive people.

That’s a current, not fundamental, observation.

White House says ‘it’s the right time’ for Israel to scale back Gaza war as fighting hits 100 days (apnews.com)

The White House said Sunday that “it’s the right time” for Israel to scale back its military offensive in the Gaza Strip, as Israeli leaders again vowed to press ahead with their operation against the territory’s ruling Hamas militant group....

This is where we say “patriot missiles don’t kill people, people kill people” and keep profiteering.

you’re spreading propaganda. The tunnels are fair game for airstrikes.

The irony.

If Trump and Biden both died today, what would happen?

Imagine the following scenario: On the 9th of January 2024 in the morning we wake up to news that President of the USA Joe Biden suffered a stroke and died in White House. The administration confirms that the death was entirely natural and no third party contributed to it. Even before the news reach all TV stations another one...

the youth don’t vote

Oh?

We estimate that 50% of young people, ages 18-29, voted in the 2020 presidential election, a remarkable 11-point increase from 2016 (39%) and likely one of the highest rates of youth electoral participation since the voting age was lowered to 18.

45-64 year old voting is in decline, declining from 75% to 71% over time.

But if I had an ebike, I’d have to share the roadway with plebeians.

I was just looking for a good, local transcriber a few weeks back, thanks for the project!

isles ,

I really wish we had a simulated world sandbox to try these ideas out in. I suspect this might lead to the end of most free websites.

isles ,

Sure, but also beside the point? I’m talking about the effects of changing an underlying mechanism of a live system, not of comparing two different systems that developed over time.

Here are my guesses: sites that have enough unique visitor count and data to work directly with advertisers may not fall. Small sites that rely on Adsense networks for revenue would no longer have revenue. A small (though non-zero) number of people/groups would continue on and seek alternative funding. Without ad networks, many tech companies fall.

I’m not saying that I’m against any of this, either. In my view, there’s a large chance that nothing of real value (to a society) would be lost. Maybe we can bring web rings back.

isles ,

How would the advertisers get location IP if they can’t have the data?

Edit: whoops, got trigger happy. Anyway, I’m totally behind taking back control from advertisers. They have an outsized influence in society. I also think there are unforeseen consequences of your blanket statement suggestion that haven’t been considered, hence wishing for a simulation. Again, if advertising is less targeted, cost of customer acquisition goes up and most business models break.

isles ,

Do you think our economy has changed since big data targeted advertising? Your example is the same as Blackmists’, essentially. We’re 30 years down a path and flipping a switch like that would have widespread repercussions. Again, I’m not saying the repercussions shouldn’t happen.

isles ,

Guessing, but just what it sounds like - a martial arts training gym. Generally, they are low revenue businesses, relegated to subleasing from other athletic gyms (like gynmastics facilities), out of community recreation centers, or in industrial warehouse areas. Sometimes you’ll find them in strip malls, as well.

Theoretically, vacancies put pressure on mall owners to lower rents, perhaps to an affordable level for these dojos. Lowering rent also makes the mall less valuable than a vacancy. And owners don’t like lowering value if they can afford it, because they can leverage existing values.

Corporations shouldn’t be able to own other corporations.

I don’t know that I’d point to the security theater of TSA as an example of “doing it right”. But agreed, they have a better shot than Rite Aid.

I think the bigger problem is shoplifting is not a symptom of poor security, but rather poor society.

Reading further, walking is only counted at a 0.3 : 1 ratio of distance, for no conceivable reason. So you can run for ~12 minutes or walk for ~1 hr, it seems.

But why should my bonus be tied to something that is not at all related to my work? Should I get a pay cut if I eat a Dorito? Am I worthy enough of a pittance, CEO? Or should I be jumping through literal hoops?

isles ,

Lawful =/= non-exploitative

isles ,

Yes, and reading the parent I see they were speaking of exploiting laws, not people specifically. Thanks for clarifying, hope you have a nice day

isles ,

Not having a central authority means you have no real power to stop someone

This is demonstrating the exact opposite. Community organization is valid.

The Verge has staff on Mastodon for a while now.

Is this an article for staff of The Verge? Or is it for an audience that might only relate to something if it’s connected to something they’ve heard of?

First inter-user messaging was 62 years ago, first email client was 51 years ago, first spam was 45 years ago, first attachments were 31 years ago.

I don’t work with it directly, but it seems we’ve bolted on a lot of “fixes and functionality” onto email, but the underlying protocols haven’t changed dramatically.

And now nearly 56.5% of all emails were spam last year. Though I don’t think that counts intranet spam I get from my bosses all the time.

José Luis Espert, a legislator with Milei’s party

    Wikipedia continues:

He was elected National Deputy for the Province of Buenos Aires in the 2021 Argentine legislative election.

So what indicates he’s not in the government?

    isles ,

Thank you for taking the time to explain your points and you are correct that I’ve only really seen headlines and white media about this new leader.

Excited for you! I’m going from 1x 12tb USB drive to 4x internal 18tb drives. I’m building the NAS from scratch and keeping my other server for its current services (mostly Plex). My parts have been defective though, so it’s all just sitting waiting for a replacement mobo.

I thought it might have been an error, a kerfuffle, or hoopla, but it was merely a fault! Phew

I hope I didn’t miss the wave here: Does anyone else have a solution for their kids? I don’t want them on un-restricted youtube, youtube kids is generally gate-kept enough that I feel comfortable they won’t come across anything immediately damaging. I pay for YouTube family for now to avoid adverts.
