Some companies have taken this as an opportunity to lower wages for remote workers, but honestly, I kind of don’t mind too much. Between being able to cook my own food and not having to commute, not having to pay for car repairs, etc, working from home honestly saves thousands per year. Plus, you really can’t put a price on the enjoyment of not having to commute like 2+ hours per day. The quality of life benefits are immense. It’s pretty great.

Being forced into an office just to have asses in seats sucks. I’ve done that twice before, and I don’t want to do it again. There was no benefit for it for me. I’m glad I did it twice though, because it made me realize I don’t want to do it.

Israel Knew Hamas’s Attack Plan More Than a Year Ago (www.nytimes.com)

Israeli officials obtained Hamas’s battle plan for the Oct. 7 terrorist attack more than a year before it happened, documents, emails and interviews show. But Israeli military and intelligence officials dismissed the plan as aspirational, considering it too difficult for Hamas to carry out....

ipkpjersi ,

That’s honestly what I’m thinking and holy shit that’s horrible if true, which it seems like it just might be.

ipkpjersi ,

Why? Why does he still have a career? Why can’t he just retire?

I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....

Forget 2 years, I’d be happy with 2 months lol it’s always a race to the bottom :(

As long as they aren’t being aborted then it’s fine, duh

Maryland roommates claim police detained them at gunpoint for no reason and shot their pet dog: "No remorse" (www.cbsnews.com)

Roommates who sued a Maryland county Monday claim police officers illegally entered their apartment without a warrant, detained them at gunpoint without justification and unnecessarily shot their pet dog, which was left paralyzed and ultimately euthanized....

ipkpjersi ,

They are gonna back them, and they are gonna defend this. It’s what they do.

ipkpjersi ,

I love how well this works for things that are both far too cheap and far too expensive.

ipkpjersi ,

I agree completely. I loved magazines, I used to buy them all the time, I even went to a specialty magazine shop when I was younger in my home town and it was incredible. Eventually, things started shifting towards online and magazines started inserting more and more advertisements and less content, and then magazines just started dying out more and more. They are awesome part of history that will be sad to see go.

ipkpjersi ,

I’d love a VRMMO like an actual Sword Art Online. Of course, I don’t even have a VR system. However, if there were a nice VRMMO, I’d shell out the money for one.

ipkpjersi ,

Yes, exactly this! I would love that.

ipkpjersi ,

I knew about it, but it’s honestly one of the saddest and sweetest things I’ve ever heard. To be that in love with someone, it’s really incredible.

ipkpjersi ,

For me the last was Far Cry 4/Far Cry Primal, after that I feel like the series went downhill and lost the magic it once had. I still loved Ghost Recon Wildlands, though.

ipkpjersi ,

Actually no, I’d let the science speak for itself. Being outdoors with a mask on significantly reduces your chances of contracting COVID-19. Being in a crowded room with lots of other people significantly increases your risk. Gabe is right, just like any other CEO would be right if they said the same thing.

Do guys that tip cam models hundreds of dollars week after week think that model actually likes them?

I understand a fantasy and a one time thing like tipping on a guys night out at a strip club, but some of these guys think they are in a relationship with someone they will never meet and don’t even know their real name or life details.

ipkpjersi ,

I think it depends. Sometimes they are unaware that the model doesn’t like them, sometimes they are aware, other times the model does like them and actually gets to know them. Like for example, there have been cases of fans actually ending up in relationships with cam models, or Twitch streamers dating their moderators or top donors, etc. That’s generally quite rare though of course but it does happen. I think a lot of guys are just lonely and like the attention it brings.

ipkpjersi ,

It’s honestly pretty stable at this point. There’s only maybe one or two bugs left but it’s very usable. I’ve enjoyed the conversations I’ve had on here too.

I bought two 4TB USB SSDs half price, they seem well built and were brand new. I think I did pretty well.

ipkpjersi ,

I got it from Amazon, but I’m not in USA so for some reason the discount seems much larger on my Amazon which is the complete opposite of how sales usually work here. It’s the Samsung T7 Shield 4TB, it seems pretty nice.

ipkpjersi ,

They are Samsung T7 Shields, I have a couple 2TB variants of the T5 and they have held up very well.

'Morale is at an all-time low': Ex-Googler writes scathing latter slamming layoffs and 'eroded' culture (www.businessinsider.com)

‘Morale is at an all-time low’: Ex-Googler writes scathing latter slamming layoffs and ‘eroded’ culture::An ex-Googler wrote a 1,500-word letter criticizing the firm and CEO Sundar Pichai’s lack of “visionary leadership.”

ipkpjersi ,

Yep, layoffs tend to hurt culture and trust.

ipkpjersi ,

Yep, that will definitely help employee morale.

ipkpjersi ,

I’m shocked it’s been allowed. They have been a monopoly for decades.

ipkpjersi ,

I know right? I can’t believe IRL catgirls still aren’t a thing yet.

We’ll get there one day, though.

ipkpjersi ,

I’m a millennial but I don’t really like romance/romcom all that much for the most part unless it’s in anime format for some reason. For movies and even TV I generally prefer action, violence, thrillers, etc. I have no idea why, I think it’s kind of interesting that the medium changes my preferences so much lol

ipkpjersi ,

I use Ubuntu. It generally tends to be boring stable, which is kinda what I want out of my OS these days. I can still customize it, and even break it if I really get bored, but it’s nice to have things just work for the most part.

ipkpjersi ,

Yep, games being designed to support Ubuntu first is a big reason why I’m so far into Ubuntu. I could easily switch if I needed to since I’m both a programmer and very comfortable with Linux but for me, it does everything I need an OS to do.

ipkpjersi ,

If I’m getting a new water heater, I’d rather get a tankless honestly. I figure by the time I’m ready for a new water heater, the tankless technology will be even better and will be perfectly ready for me to use it.

ipkpjersi ,

Gas is fairly cheap where I live so that should be okay I think. Don’t tankless water heaters generally come with recirculating pumps?

ipkpjersi ,

I’m not in the US, and tbh I don’t really use a ton of hot water. I think a tankless would still be a good investment for me. I’ll also end up getting an air-to-air heat pump probably with a gas furnace as a backup for the really really cold winter days.

ipkpjersi ,

I figure by the time I get tankless in probably another 10 years the tech will likely be more stable so it won’t have nearly as many problems as they do now which is already less than they had before.

ipkpjersi ,

I don’t post because I don’t have much interesting to share, but I’ve had some great interactions in the comments on this platform.

ipkpjersi ,

Well yeah, Microsoft is very much in bed with OpenAI. It’s not a huge mystery to see how this is going to play out.

YouTube Says New 5-Second Video Load Delay Is Supposed to Punish Ad Blockers, Not Firefox Users (www.404media.co)

Firefox users are reporting an 'artificial' load time on YouTube videos. YouTube says it's part of a plan to make people who use adblockers "experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using."

ipkpjersi ,

This is why I refuse to pay for YouTube. They are literally actively making the experience worse, rather than trying to make the paid experience better. This is laughable.

ipkpjersi ,

No, I think it’s a reasonable stance. I pay for Crunchyroll and Hidive because I like the paid service they provide, it’s a good experience that they are providing and I find value in it. Why would I pay for something that I don’t find value in, something where a company tries to actively downgrade the experience of its users rather than try to upgrade the experience of its paid service? I like services where they don’t try to actively screw over their users. I pay for Lastfm and Trakt too, because again I like the paid service that they provide.

ipkpjersi ,

Yes, I do realize how terribly expensive hosting videos is. It doesn’t change my stance as a customer/end user, however.

ipkpjersi ,

I feel like this situation couldn’t be any more weird.

ipkpjersi ,

This is exactly my thoughts on it too, unfortunately.

Also there can be social consequences from what you say, free speech does not protect you from that, despite some people thinking that it does or that it should.

ipkpjersi ,

I mean you kinda get used to the cold after a while lol

ipkpjersi ,

I like wholesome manga, Nagatoro is good.

ipkpjersi ,

Different countries, vastly different pay scales.

ipkpjersi ,

This is unfortunately almost definitely how it works.

After all, what kind of CEO can live with only having one yacht?

ipkpjersi ,

It depends on where you live, but yes in tech hubs in the US that’s normal pay. Of course, outside of USA you’ll see like 5x or more lower salaries. I’m happy with the money I currently make, but I’d likely make 2-3x what I currently make if I moved to USA.
