A newbie helping newbies - Launch Firefox profile from shortcut.

I recently switched from Windows 10 to ZorrinOS (after a quick detour to NixOS… OOF) and in the course of setting things up how I like, I ran across some interesting stuff relating to flatpaks and shortcuts. I wanted to get this written to provide a resource for other people who might be switching....

governorkeagan ,

I was looking for something like this the other day. Thank you!

According to Google Plasma 6 for Arch was cancelled :D (beehaw.org)

I don’t use Google directly, but as part of the open source meta search engine SearXNG, where we can specify what search engines it will use. And the top result is from Google and I can confirm that Plasma 6 for Arch is now officially been canceled. And it’s linked to Reddit....

governorkeagan ,

I’ve been refreshing the arch repo site constantly to check if it’s available on the standard repo (not the testing).

governorkeagan OP ,

I’m based in Ireland for context.

I did a whole lot of tweaking to my LinkedIn when I was unemployed the last time. What I found was that a lot of the roles here are for much more senior positions.

I reached out directly to a recruiter today, hopefully I’ll hear back from her soon as well.

governorkeagan OP ,

That’s the goal. I have no interest in staying here longer than I need.

governorkeagan OP ,

Basically the role entails helping train and correct AI models. If a user reports a response as negative we will try understand why and provide what should have been the correct response. It’s not necessarily difficult but it can be very boring and mentally draining.

governorkeagan OP ,

It’s a little different for me at the moment since they are based in the USA and I’m not. Most of the company is based outside of the USA.

governorkeagan OP ,

There was a review on Glassdoor, that has now been deleted, that referred to them as a “modern slave company”

governorkeagan OP ,

Just looking for advice from people who experienced the same and what they did to get out.

governorkeagan OP ,

We’re definitely underplayed big time. Management is getting $100k + $20k bonus.

governorkeagan OP ,

We use hubstaff but not fully. They only use it for activity tracking and hours worked. Normally you’d be able to see the amount owed based on hours worked but they have that removed for us.

governorkeagan OP ,

I know that Irish law says I need a payslip but that’s for a company doing business here. I’m not sure how that works with fully remote jobs.

governorkeagan OP ,

It’s the same in Ireland. Especially if you go through a management company.

governorkeagan OP , (edited )

The only “issue” would be that it could show me as being inactive which would raise some flags for them. It would also affect my AHT since I’d be job hunting and not solving tasks.

I’ve been using my phone to apply and search for jobs throughout the day.

Edit: It’s 100% glorified data entry! I always find it amusing that they have this on their homepage.

“[company name] executes your vision to perfection. You give us your most complex challenges and we become your operations, automation, and AI partner to deliver faster outcomes“

They have a lot of people from poorer countries so the $15.50 is worth a lot more to them. It just feels like exploitation to me. There was a team from another project that had a bunch of people fired because they couldn’t reach the quality target as fast as they wanted during the onboarding and training phase.

governorkeagan ,

I’ll go ahead and throw another option out there. Magic Earth. I would use OsmAnd or Organic Maps more often but neither support routing with public transport other than the train.

governorkeagan ,

Some of it is user reported. I think they have a 3rd party provider as well but I’m not 100% certain on that.

governorkeagan ,

On a side not. Is it just me or does Amazon never follow the delivery instructions?

governorkeagan ,

I went to high school with twins born on the 29th. If I remember correct they celebrated on the 28th.

governorkeagan OP ,

My wording was not great. I was looking for the live+persistent mode.

governorkeagan OP ,

My laptop is not very powerful so using a VM isn’t a great idea. I wanted to use the USB in order to boot into Fedora Silverblue before installing it so I could play around and see how it feels.

governorkeagan ,

invidious / piped for those who don’t want to watch on YouTube.

governorkeagan ,

I think there’s more people like this than people want to admit. There’s certain things where I have a personal interest and I’ll stay more up to date about etc. but the rest? I’m doing the same as you.

governorkeagan ,

I’ll preface my question by saying that it may be a n00b question. I started using Linux as my daily driver about 4 or 5 months ago.

What makes EndeavourOS so terminal centric? I’ve been using it for about a month now (maybe two) having moved from Pop!_OS. I don’t think I’m using the terminal more now than I did in Pop!_OS.

For context, I use my PC for video/photo editing, gaining occasionally, and work (we use our personal computers).

governorkeagan ,

That makes a lot of sense, thank you.

governorkeagan OP ,

Aur. I’ll add that to the post now

governorkeagan OP ,

Honestly, I always (at least in my head) thought of the AUR and normal arch repositories as the same. TIL.

To correct myself, I installed Firefox with pacman.

governorkeagan OP ,

Thanks to @NateSwift I realised that I didn’t use the AUR. I installed with the normal Arch repositories(pacman).

governorkeagan ,

Saving this for when I get my NAS (eventually)

foxy , to linux
@foxy@social.edu.nl avatar

Apparently my love language is installing @linux on the laptops of people I really care about.

governorkeagan ,

I’ve got ZorinOS 17 running on a laptop I share with my partner. Her initial reaction was “what is this?” but now that she’s used to it, she’s been happy.

Silverblue looks quite interesting, I might give it a go in a VM. As long as it kinda looks like Windows it shouldn’t be too hard of a transition

governorkeagan ,

Could you share your config for Awesome? I’m toying with the idea of moving to a tiling WM.

governorkeagan ,

For a lot of people it’s just a hobby and they use their home as a digital playground.

governorkeagan ,

I use all of Proton’s products as well. I’ve found a Yubikey works best for the 2FA codes. I’m also working on having a backup password manager

Looking to make the switch

Hi everyone, looking to make the switch from windows. I’m reasonably technically apt but not a programmer by any means. I’ve been doing some homework on which distro I would like to use and pop_os kinda feels like the right direction. I’m running an Nvidia 3060TI on a Ryzen 5600 chip set on an Asus tuf motherboard. Any...

governorkeagan , (edited )

I have been running Pop!_OS for a couple months (Linux in general), it’s been rock solid! I had it running dual booted with Windows for about 1.5 months and had no issues. Nvidia drivers also just work really well.

I’ve been looking around to see if the grass is greener on the other side with other distros, but I keep coming back to Pop!_OS. I’m also super excited about their new Desktop Environment (DE) coming later this year.

**EDIT:**System76 (the people who make Pop) have some really good articles/docs on installing and using Pop - installing Pop!_OS, TechHut Video on dual booting & piped version

governorkeagan ,

I think I need to give endeavourOS another try (I played around very briefly in a VM), I always see good things about it.

governorkeagan ,

With regards to 6. I tried Xerolinux with a rice on it and yes it looked pretty but after a couple hours of real world use it was more annoying than anything else.

governorkeagan ,

It might be that OP is referring to Mastodon posts appearing in Lemmy? example, this appears on the proton privacy Lemmy community

edit: added example

governorkeagan ,

I’m really excited to test the Alpha, it’s looking really good so far!
