I’m really enjoying Mission Center - especially compared to the default app on Pop!_OS.

btop is also really good if you want something in the terminal

governorkeagan ,

That’s the same reason I installed it. Although, I do enjoy the system monitor on kubuntu kde

governorkeagan ,

That looks very good, thanks for the recommendation!

governorkeagan OP ,

Not sure if you’ve had the same experience but I had an American colleague ask me what I meant when I didn’t give the time in the 12hr format. The message was something like, “I’ve booked the meeting for 14:00”

governorkeagan OP ,

I’ve heard the same with regards to proper military time not having the colon.

governorkeagan OP ,

It’s interesting that it’s not as widespread amongst the public. As far as I know, the rest of the world either uses it or is able to understand it whereas I’ve had the opposite with Americans. I’m a very limited sample size though.

governorkeagan OP , (edited )

IMHO, I don’t think that would change anything (with regards to immigrant influence).

EDITFor those downvoting me, I’ll explain it more for you. The vast majority of the world currently uses the metric system. Only three countries officially use the imperial system (UK has mixed usage, including them would bring the number to four.). If the majority of the world uses one system, and the US hasn’t changed, how will migrants influence the country enough to change?

governorkeagan OP ,

Thank you for sharing that! I’ll have a look into it.

governorkeagan OP ,

It took me a second to realise what the pun was…

governorkeagan OP ,

Never seen that spoken myself. Do yo have any examples? I’m genuinely curious

governorkeagan OP ,

You mean freedom minutes, right??

governorkeagan OP ,

Just to add to this. I found a map on Wikipedia that shows this.

For all the doubters that Linux gaming is smoother and faster. (video.hardlimit.com)

A video for any doubters that Linux gaming is better than Windows in which it DESTROYS Windows by 25% in AC Odyssey. To put it in perspective, 25% improvement is like getting a new GPU. You can save $600 and instead use something like OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for free....

governorkeagan ,

Haven’t watched the video yet but I’d like to add from my very limited experience. I recently switched to Kubuntu (still have my windows boot) and the one game I play (Red Dead Redemption 2) seems to be running worse. I haven’t done much testing at all so it could be something I can adjust and get running better.

Having said that, general day-to-day performance is miles ahead of my Windows install.

If I could get RDR2 to run better on Linux and DaVinci Resolve to run I’d have no need to keep my Windows install.

governorkeagan ,

I haven’t tried that yet. I tried running it as a container via distrobox.

guide I followed

governorkeagan ,

I might try running arch as well. I’ll test it out before I move to a bare metal install.

governorkeagan ,

Technically they do but it isn’t supported on all distros. They officially support centOS 8, RHEL and one other that I’m forgetting.

governorkeagan ,

This. I often search for results from Reddit.

governorkeagan ,

There’s one that I know of but I can’t remember her name. I think it starts with “A” and she might be Australian but don’t quote me on that.

governorkeagan ,

If more subreddits moved over it might make people more willing to move over as well.

governorkeagan ,

Same here. The communities I’ve interacted with here, if I was on the equivalent subreddit, I’d have be downvoted to hell for not knowing enough. I find I’m able to have proper discussions here

Which version of a distro to install?

Hi Linux- how important is it to install, say Debian, the version that is specifically made for your hardware? For example, if I have a Rock64 SBC, do I have to install Debian-rock64.img or can I just go with Debian-arm64.img? Will I lose performance/features if using generic arm64 image, or conversely, will I gain...

governorkeagan ,

I’m no expert so take what I say with a grain of salt. You might be able to get it to work on your hardware even if it’s not the recommended version. Having said that you’ll most likely run into issues in some way or another (e.g performance/weird bugs)

governorkeagan ,

I’ve got access to the “You tab” one of my accounts but not the other. Both are signed in on my iPhone 13 Pro

governorkeagan OP ,

Oops! Thanks for catching that.

It’s supposed to say “personal favourite “

governorkeagan OP ,

I added a link to the Wiki page in the post as well. Dublin has some great tourist spots! If you need any recommendations, send me a message.

governorkeagan OP ,

The city centre will have lots of festivities happening all over the place. Try and get there earlier rather than later.

Go take a photo outside temple bar (better if you can get there earlier). 99.99% of locals wouldn’t order anything inside because of how expensive it is compared to other pubs.

O’Connell Street should have a parade going through it. They’ll normally release a map of everything that’s happening closer to the time.

governorkeagan OP ,

I’ll be trying it anyways, just thought I’d ask to see if anyone here had insights.

governorkeagan OP ,

Interesting. I’ve not come across this previously. Thanks for sharing!

governorkeagan OP ,

I’ve got a GTX 1660TI

governorkeagan OP ,

How much bigger are the file sizes? I’ve transcoded to ProRes previously and that was on average 6x bigger

governorkeagan ,

I can’t help you with your issues but I’m interested to see what the recommendations are for alternative applications. I’m planning a switch to Linux soon

governorkeagan ,

Proton has introduced their own version of captcha as well — blog post

governorkeagan ,

Yeah and I don’t think they will release it for public use anytime soon

governorkeagan OP ,

Any preferences on the distro? I’ve been enjoying Fedora but I’ve also tested Ubuntu and enjoyed that

governorkeagan OP ,

I’ll probably end up settling on Ubuntu. Thought I’d try a couple before making a final decision.

governorkeagan OP ,

I didn’t realise that people use them interchangeably. I’ve got an idea on what a WM is and what a DE is but nothing super in depth.

governorkeagan OP ,

I’m doing all my testing on a VM before committing and doing a bare metal install

governorkeagan OP ,

I’m thinking of settling on Ubuntu for the same reason. It’s easy enough to get a VM setup and test other distros if needed

governorkeagan OP ,

Thank you for that very detailed response!

governorkeagan OP ,

What’s with all the drama regarding Wayland? I’m seeing it constantly.

governorkeagan OP ,

I do enjoy tinkering so I might play with it on a VM

governorkeagan OP ,

Totally agree! I won’t be installing it as a daily driver anytime soon
