Visit a richer neighborhood, then.

On my way to/from work I pass a place called Rancho Murietta, CA (Google it), a private fenced-in rich people living place.

Shit tons of golf carts being driven in and around the area to the nearby stores n shit because it’s too gas-expsensive to load everyone up into the truck and blast down to the store 3 times a day.

I’ve almost never seen a working-class person drive a cart on the streets like a car for longer than a block or 2 near an event, which is special occasion. These people do it NORMALLY and often on HIGHWAYS.

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Have you actually been in one of those Kei trucks

Yes.

It’s basically a tin can on skateboard wheels

Incredibly exaggerated. Also, I’ve ridden in worse vehicles that were perfectly legal here.

It is extremely power limited due to engine size

That’s why they’re not allowed on freeways / highways in places they’re allowed, thus it’s not a problem.

handles poorly due to the wheel size

Better than a lot of what’s steeet-legal, still.

they certainly are not safer than any US vehicle made in the last 35 years.

They certainly are, you’re just pretending that their use-case is identical to say a sedan when that’s not the case. When used for their purpose (Shirt-Medium distances on Slow-Medium speed roads) they are fantastic vehicles. There’s a reason they’re still made and sell like hotcakes elsewhere in the world.

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

There are no passenger vehicles produced in the states with wheels that size

First: wheel size is not the only variable for handling, not even close. Second: produced in the US is different than legal to drive on our roads.

But don’t pretend that they are in the same class as other vehicles on the roads in the US

You’re right, quite a few of the shitboxes I see out there with valid tags are quite a bit WORSE than a Kei truck.

I’m saying that there are valid concerns about them

And I’m saying that’s blatantly false when we let far more unsafe vehicles exist and Kei trucks do just fine in other countries. The amount of Keis I’ve seen when visiting Japan is staggering, if they were truly a death trap worth regulating then there’d be some statistics backing that up from Japan and they’d likely be way less popular for being stupidly unsafe.

I’ve driven in multiple Kei trucks and they’re about on par with what a LOT of rural farms and even state/federal park services will use. If modern ones were even legal to import in the first place they’d be even better on the safety front.

some DMVs are finding them not to be up to snuff.

Nice appeal to authority. A DMV finding something to be unsafe means jack shit in a world where there’s lobbying incentive for governments to make rules so companies can make money. You know, the original reason Kei trucks are banned?

Assuming that the world continues to exist in a way that lets me have a steam account at the time of my natural lifespans average end (another… 46 years):

My steam library grows at a slower rate than my mass storage has, and I’m quite confident that one will be able to fit my entire steam library as it currently is on a normal and affordable drive in at most 15 years.

With those two facts in play I can remain confident in my ability to crack everything I own (assuming I even want everything) and safely store it for at-will passing down to as many people as I want.

But thanks for the reminder to not blindly trust you, Valve. Always useful to have those.

My wife and mys manager when we worked at the same place once told each of us separately in out reviews:

You do great, I love that you finish your work early, but the other people in the office dont like that you go home AT 5 (9 hour shift w/ 30m lunch) because they stay an extra 2-4 hours regularly.

Said it to me first, I just told her it sounds like her salary (I was hourly) employees suck at their jobs. She just kinda stares at me (this is the exact bluntness she promoted me to working with her for so…)

When she said it to my wife SHE went off on one about how she used to do those other people’s jobs and that it’s ridiculous that they can’t do it in the same amount of time and would dare demand that she stay extra time just to appease their incompetence

She straight up admitted to us all the 40-60 year olds just didnt like that we could do our jobs and go home because we could type faster than 12 WPM

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

This never ceases to amaze me.

My old best friend and I used to be a programming tag team that worked pretty well; he’d slap together w semi-functional version of the idea we had and then id go in and make the UI make sense and fix all the logic bugs and typos.

I’m not saying I’m some perfect UI guru or anything but the way he (and other people I’ve met) seem to have no internal base knowledge of shit like “similar settings probably shouldn’t go on completely opposite sides of the screen under different menus” or “5-deep nested drop-down menus hurt people’s souls”

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Some people seem to have a personality that keeps them more actively focused on external things rather than their internal thoughts while high, and those people don’t seem to have the same memory problems

Could also be ADHDers. I smoke ALL day either because it’s a passable replacement for my actual meds (helps focus) or because if I don’t then the Adderall turns off my hunger sensation completely. Despite this my memory is on point specifically when I’m high, I’m a little slower when sober funny enough.

My Dr directly attributes that to my ADHD. He could be talking out of his ass but he’s also got it and has been doing work in this field for like 40 years so I trust him.

@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Market share is going to be a pretty bad metric for this kind of thing because businesses and government are going to stick with even old ass windowsnl installs long after any normal user would have at least upgraded, if not moved to Linux.

Just in my office alone there’s got to be at least 50 PCs running windows, and I bet half of the people here don’t even have a machine at home, so that’s 75 PCs or so amongst just me and my co-workers, and even if every assumed worker went Linux today we’d still be at over 50% windows market share of people who work at my office.

So like, unless multiple businesses and governments that have shown to not care already suddenly decide to were never going to see 50% adoption

Unless we stop including businesses and similar in that share stat.

Lol @ this barely coherent drivel being up voted.

Lol harder at the butthurt 3.5mm fetishists who downvote simple answers to their unbelievably petty and stupid criticisms.

Lol hardest at every dipshit who mentioned Bluetooth and didn’t like when the adapters were pointed out as the basic solution to their whining.

“We don’t want solutions we want to bitch”

simplicity the cable just works. no configuration. no pairing .un pairing, figuring why it worked yesterday

Use the adapter plug as mentioned. You can even just leave it on your normal headphones if you only use 1 pair!

whats the big deal. This is a bias for the plug users - would it hurt to keep it?

Hurts waterproofing, phone slimness and design, etc. again, you can just use an adapter to have all the stuff you’re whining about back.

Investment - I have really good headphones. I have really good earbuds. Yes there are adapters but they are finicky exactly when you want them to just work

No, you’re either talking out of your ass or buying the cheapest possible cord and being shocked when it doesn’t work right. My $8 adapter has worked for 4 years no problem driving over-ear headphones no issues.

they purposefully gloss over the things they are taking away

Nothing was taken away. It’s literally just combined with another port now.

If you want to be mad at anyone: be mad at the people making headphones with 3.5mm jacks rather than USB-C, as they’re the ones using an outdated port.

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Why would I give up my existing wired headphones to replace them with expensive sub-standard battery operated ones

You don’t, you use an adapter and move on with life.

I seriously do not understand people who die on this hill. The 3.5 Jack is dead in electronics and the only people making the transition painful are the HEADPHONE manufacturers who refuse to wire a USB-C instead of a now-outded plug.

This happens every time an obsolete connector gets phased out: cheap manufacturers keep using it well beyond the reasonable time to swap out, leaving the end users who fear change to cling on even longer for no good reason

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Literally just get that kind of charger. That $8 one I have is one.

All you weird-ass fetishists for an old connector keep having the most child-lrvel intelligence “gotchas”

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Type C can’t spin 360°

Headphone jack portion of the adapter can

Remember the 2000s

Yeah, because everyone having a different charger is the same thing as an actually UNIVERSAL connector.

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I love how anyone with half a fucking brain gets down voted.

Rather than point out where youre wrong thet just keep yelling about Bluetooth and downvotig once they realize they’ve run out of “gotchas”

Anyone fucking stupid enough to think the 3.5mm Jack is a good thing deserves the disappointment they feel every time a device doesn’t have own, tbh, bring it on themselves

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I have been, I don’t respect people who want things to stay the way they were because they refuse to try new things.

People with very polite and normal responses were gettug downvoters just because they offered solutions that can’t be dismissed easily, so downvoting was done instead.

It allllways comes to the civility argument when people know their position is dog shit, too. Cute.

Funny that you called me the one not paying attention to other people’s desires when all I did was point out that the people claiming there was literally no other option were wrong. I’d consider burying your head in the sand and pretending adapters don’t exist as being a garbage conversation partner.

Are you 12?

No, but you must be if you think what I said is in any way contentious. People in this thread are being gigantic whiners about pointless shit and I have nothing but contempt for them after seeing the dogshit arguments for their side and personal attacks at me rather than actual points being made.

Literally everything I’ve tossed at Linux Mint and told “use proton 9” has just worked? Currently playing the most heavily modded FNV run I’ve ever done while also experiencing actually 0 crashes for the first time and I’m not actually 100% sure how that’s happening?

I’ve been shocked with Linux’s game capabilities through proton 9 at this point and would love to hear of a use case where it’s not working just to see if I could get it working for the fun of it if I get some time

So I don’t need all the features of a smart fridge and shit because I habe a phone and a tablet hub for that sort of thing, but a feature I’ve only seen on LG smart fridges is something I’m frequently annoyed more don’t have these days with how cheap the tech is: remote fridge monitoring

Slap a few cheap cameras in there so I can see 2 angles on every shelf and monitor the current fridge levels from my phone.

"Are we low on ketchup or am I stupid?” know for certain!

Saw a feature close to this but not quite as good on an LG smart fridge years ago and have been vehemently disappointed by every fridge ive looked at since not having that.

And I’m in the market for a new fridge goddamnit. I don’t want to have to install my own cams but I’m close to doing it at this point

Well, you didn’t explain why they’re bad, that’s probably why

As others pointed out it’s incredibly nice for the times when you’re not doing anything but are in your car, anyway. If the ability to play games is disabled while driving then is there actually an issue?

Seems like a great way to kill time while plugged into a charger to me, I already do it with my steam deck when I charge my car

I’d call it “luxury”

It’s not expensive, but it’s way more expensive than a chocolate bar of similar size from any of the “candy companies” people see at the corner store like Hershey’s.

Can get a Hershey’s bar that’s ~2x the size of 1 Lindt ball for 1/4 the price at my corner store. Bulk discount scaling makes that even more wonky, I think 10 Hershey’s bars was like 8 bucks at Walmart while the smaller bag of kind milk chocolate balls was 12

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

deleting all the safety equipment and being under powered

That must be why those death traps regularly kill people in all of the countries where they’re regularly used!

And even if that (crap) reason is why: ban them from the freeways, then, not from every fucking road. You know, like mopeds and similar small scooters?

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Unless you live somewhere with 0 soil quality or literally never do any work to fertilize it’s not that much extra cost to fertilize and keep soil doing well

Run a compost heap and you’re practically going to supply yourself with everything needed for free if you can scale it enough (which is like, 2 2x4 beds and remembering to dump organic food remnants too)

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Not OP but about the same amount of time:

Mint refused to put sound out through my sound card. It saw my card, knew the exact brand and card and driver version, could see when I plugged and unplugged things from each of the jacks, but would not output any audio. I eventually solved this by just using the DAC on my new speakers and tossing the sound card lol.

Text scaling with an nVidia card is broken and looks god awful. 1440p monitor scrolling the Mint website and the text is gray/yellow jaggy mess. Installing an experimental driver and scaling up a bit fixes it for the most part but is a sub-ideal solution as I don’t like scaling.

There’s no perfect replacement for the Snip tool. I want to just spr+shift+s, click/drag a box, and done. So far the closest I’ve gotten is shift+prntscrn, click/drag, enter, which is more annoying by far.

There’s no dark theme for mint-Y. I love the look of the XP/7ish theme it’s got going on but it’s light mode only. Travesty.

Too many password prompts when updating flatpaks. I should have used a way shorter password for this OS.

Plugging in 2 monitors of different screen resolutions can cause some serious issues if I alt/tab. Fixed by unplugging and plugging in one of the monitors but it’s fucking annoying.

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I could, but then whole-screen Printscreen is gone and I use that about as often

It’s nice that these programs have all kinds of extraneous features, I’m sure people out there find use for them. I just want a quick and simple snip tool that doesn’t take extra button presses to confirm that no, really, I don’t want to use extra features

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It’s the same number of keypresses

And

Only difference is one keypress

Are conflicting statements within your own comment.

and you have additional functionality that doesn’t get in the way

I couldn’t care less about the additional functionality, that’s not what I use snip for. And it does get in the way, that’s my whole point. Needing to press enter to confirm that I’m “done editing” is an extra keypress that isn’t needed and gets in the way.

I’m curious how “more annoying by far” to click-drag-enter vs click-drag.

As I stated I regularly snip at work on a Windows machine and pretty regularly at home which was until recently also windows. I’m very used to tapping a 3-key shortcut as 1keypress, click/dragging, and moving on with my life. That one extra keypress adds a second or two of confusion and annoyance every time I use it, and I can’t even easily retrain myself as I still use it on Windows regularly.

You can readjust the selection

I would rather re-snip the 1/500 times this matters to me than press enter the other 499 times. I get others might like it, but why is it not an option for people like me?

you can record video instead

I have software for that already that does even more than the snip replacers, though I can’t think of any time I’ve used a video when 3 screenshots would have worked too.

Basically it boils down to over design without option boxes for those who don’t want to do things exactly as the software designers intended.

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

And, by using that key as a confirmation-step, you get a whole bunch of extra functionality that you say you don’t use

Yes, which is entirely useless to me and not something I want. Incredibly simple concept you’re having trouble with.

Which, if you don’t use it, will still give you the exact same functionality, and doesn’t affect you.

Nope, you’re really shit at reading comprehension. It does not function exactly the same, that’s the problem.

Consider if you ever need to repeat the screen grab 10x times, the difference is:

I will not as I do not ever need to do that. Idk what weird world you live in where you’d ever need to take 10 screenshots of the same still screen but I can think of even easier ways to manage something like that then with a Printscreen manager.

I find it fascinating to care so strongly

You’re the one typing out multi-paragraph replies to me simply stating that windows does this better and it’s silly that Linux doesn’t have something as simple as Snip. I don’t really care at all as it’s one keypress, it’s just funny.

objectively a worse approach in every single way

Subjectively, you mean. I do not need or want hose extra features and it now takes time to tell my PC to not use those features. So no, it’s a worse approach to me.

And to care so strongly about that one keypress, that the optional versatility that gives (toggle video recording, adjust rectangle, reuse rectangle, move rectangle with same dimensions) is all in all considered a worse alternative

You really have a hard time with other people valuing stuff differently then you, huh?

Those features are less than worthless to me. I do not ever need or want them. The fact that the software cannot handle that I don’t is useless bloat, which Linux is usually all about removing.

To each their own, and UX design is arguably not yours.

Go fuck yourself you stuck up prick. Fucking Linux users I swear

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t want something so it’s stupid to not want it

Your lack of imagination doesn’t mean you are correct. You have an opinion, learn to handle that it’s not fact.

I pray you’re not involved with anything UX related either as your attitude is the exact kind of dismissive garbage that’s landed us in this world of horrid UI and UX
