I just make the G Assistant answer it

9 times out of 10 telling an AI voice who’s calling and why is too hard for even a normal human to figure out so they hang up and now there’s nothing to worry about!

Lol, of course not, you have to make an account to enable developer options to enable side loading

The stealing of our data is how they make the headset so cheap

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m expecting it, tbh

I have a quest 2 and it’s actually a FANTASTIC headset, but I want to rip the meta shit out

Not even because they’re a gross company (tho they are), I use a burner account with burner info and play in a gray room through a router specifically for my VR (almost completely lag free wireless this way, it works) but because I HATE that they made you have arms in an update and didn’t let us turn it off. They’re horrid

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Not in games, but in the main hub menu of the device

It tries to guess where your arms are based on controller position

It’s c r a p

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I wish they gave me a firearm

But no, it’s a garbage implementation of giving you a digital avatar that displays arms in a first person view by guessing where they must be based off of controller position.

It clearly doesn’t use the cams on the device cuz they’re bad

gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That’s what happens with old devices and dealing with it is part of the cost of using them

Lol, the famously great reading comprehension of the Internet.

  1. I didn’t excuse shit
  2. 5 years of updates is a pretty normal timeline for mobile devices
gamermanh ,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Pointing out that you’re whining about something thats irrelevant isn’t excsing shit, but reading comprehension is hard for you I guess.

The initial point was that the dick move was blocking developers who wanted to and were able from sending content hosted on metas server to Quest 1 headsets. I responded with a sarcastic comment giving people a way to get around that dickheaded move by sideloading

It is not related in any way to not giving security updates anymore. That’s normal EOL shit for devices and software. If you don’t like that or don’t like how long meta offered support that’s a you issue and I did not comment on it other than pointing out that 5 years is normal update life on devices like that after you already changed the subject

Right out of the box it functions enough like Windows that even my wife swapped with barely a hiccup

Yes, other distros can be great and all that jazz, but Mint makes a strong first toe dip for those who are less confident in tech

Shit, I’m confident and I actually preferred my mint install over the other couple of distros I tried partly because it came mostly pre done and only my server gets my IT time these days

@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Tried out fedora and it was really good, but mint just felt a little bit more right to me

Which sucks cuz I fuckin own a fedora like a massive nerd and wanted to make that joke as often as possible. I mean I grow mint too but big fucking whoop it’s a dollar to get a plant and near impossible to kill

“near impossible to kill”

Autocorrect and my lack of proofreading foiled me

That’s all you’ve been so far tho

gamermanh ,

Keep pretending you can’t understand the other commenters who calmly and clearly explained why what you said is silly, I think it’s funny to watch

How many “it’s really hot outside” until iron melts, or water boils, or meat cooks?

Who cares, we don’t need to know that at all in daily life.

But I’ll be damned if I use punctuation in my math

If we don’t need to why would we? Base-10 isn’t a virtue for a temperature measuring system mainly used to tell how it feels for a human to exist in the world

Every goddamn time I try to use GIMP I end up making a series of stupid minor errors because it uses non-standard keybosrd shortcuts (why is the default DESELECT hotkey not CTRL+D like in every other program with selection tools) or some other esoteric decision of hiding something in 3 menus or calling a tool by a different name to everyone else, then end up re-pirating Photoshop, not needing either for a while, deleting Photoshop cuz “well I’ll learn GIMP eventually”, repeat

But to say privacy is a weird thing is really sad

That’s not what was said.

They said “they’re probably one of those privacy weirdos”, which is different.

I value privacy and am conscious of it, more so than the average user. I choose, willingly and knowingly, to use certain services that damage my privacy in exchange for their services.

The “privacy weirdos” are the people who see that statement and go “well you shouldn’t ever be using service x because it’s not secure you stupid dipshit! Just use service y, it’s FOSS and has half the features but it respects privacy so it’s better in every way!”

Dunno how the person got “I’m a privacy nut” from “ads aren’t good for journalism” tho, that doesn’t track

My mint install won’t let sound through my sound card. Drivers are there, it knows exactly the brand and model of card and shows it, it even knows when I plug/unplug stuff from it, but 0 sound, ever.

The solution?

Just plug my headphones into my new speakers that have their own DAC, anyway.

Still no idea why the card doesn’t work right

Paid-for games aren’t a service that should be able to be taken away in this manner

For software (like games) the usual rule is “use the old version if you don’t agree to the new terms”, but that’s not possible without piracy here

Alcohol is very normal

gamermanh ,

Science says completely otherwise

The only science relevant to if something is “normal” in this context are the social sciences, which would very much not say otherwise

Human consumption of alcohol is older than society, it’s very normal and natural for humans to drink. We’re not even the only animal aware of alcohol and it’s effects

I think they’re trying to kill the fitbit line and replace it with the pixel watch and WearOS

My reasoning:

  • Enshittification of the non-watch devices
  • Pixel Watch 2 actually being an improvement on 1, they don’t always do that
  • PW2 just being their highest end fitbit + watch
  • Many people I know who had fitbits decided to move over to a smartwatch for convenience of other features at not that much increased cost. It could be that offering devices below a watch has become less worth it in their eyes and to be something left to other niche manufacturers.
  • WearOS in general has seen massive improvements over AndroidWear and I think they’re hoping that the license fees they’ll get from third party cheaper watchmakers that end up using WearOS. Kinda like what they do with Android, offer an expensive top of the line flagship device, maybe a middle ground option, and leave it to the niche companies willing to do the work to find out what exact features people want on the cheap end while bringing in their licensing and app store fees.

It worked for phones, I can see it working for this kind of device, but it means dropping the old “lesser” line of devices

If men feel excluded from the exhibit, they are understanding how women feel being excluded from other spaces. The men are experiencing the art exactly how the artist intends.

2 things:

  1. Because men totally never feel left out or others in their lives, this is the only place they’ll ever feel that. Fucking garbage excuse for sexism.
  2. It’s not just the artists art she’s locking behind this sexist wall, which is the exact dick move that she’s butthurt about from checks notes 60 years ago at this museum. If she was depriving men of her own art that’s one thing, but the article clearly states original Picasso’s are in the room.

It’s incredibly fucking dickheaded to hide another, frankly more popular and actually cared about, artists work from people due to something they can’t control. I get that’s the point she’s making, but it doesn’t teach men something they don’t already know: it just makes her the asshole, big-time. It almost certainly will convince more people online who hear about this that her point is total bullshit and she’s some “stupid man hating count” or something, too, which is nice

If they are canceling the contract mid cycle I am 100% expecting compensation, but if its just a policy renewal? there’s other companies or if not that was a risk being built in a higher risk zone

These houses weren’t built when these zones were high risk and more companies are moving out, leaving people with nothing.

Frankly, I feel no pity in forcing companies that have bent people over and fucked them to insure these places. Maybe that’ll teach them a lesson in not helping fight climate change as risk management

The most famous forms of Holocaust denial and revisionism tend to focus on Jews, casting doubt, for example, on how many were exterminated in the camps. Muggle isn’t considered offensive within the world, it’s just the British term for a non-magical person. Wizard/witch for those with magic, muggle for those without (in America we call them No-Maj, which is fucking awful)

Some of the bad characters will say it in a sneering or mean-spirited way, but they often don’t use it at all and go instead for subtler terms like “those lesser than us” or “the filth” and similar

The only term in the series that’s considered “offensive” is mudblood, which is basically a mixed race slur (it’s a wizard/witch born to one or both muggle parents), and it’s very much addressed as not OK to be said and why it shouldn’t be said and how much it can hurt people (from Rowlings fave character, no less!)

It’s insane to me that the person who wrote that into book 2 went on to be a fucking TERF
