Learnt BASIC on a C64.
Spent several years writing DOS programs in Turbo Pascal. (Oh how I miss having to optimise my code.)
Fell in love with OS/2 the first time I read about it. Tried it and never looked back.
Been using Linux for some 2.5 decades now, still coding daily (different languages, mind you), but there's never been a desktop like OS/2's Workplace Shell. There's just no going back to application centric GUIs.

And we interpret "push past your limits" as push yourself until you literally collapse from exhaustion rather than push past the minor discomfort that we push past every day just to survive. And we assume most of our lives that other people are doing the same and so we feel inferior since it's so much more difficult for us. But

@irotsoma @actuallyautistic Oh.
That surely would explain a lot...

Have any of my people ever done an EEG? I'm reading about how those can be used for diagnostic purposes and though I'm already diagnosed, I'm intrigued and kind of want to see what it says about my brain.

@dramypsyd @actuallyautistic decades ago, to monitor that certain health issues don't turn out to be epileptic. Nothing conclusive. The results were weird enough to keep them worried without pointing to anything in particular.

Do you have any clothing routines? I own eight gray plain t-shirts with no tags which I love. I often will just wear them over and over again.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Same as everyone else here, it seems. :) Basically one outfit, only the colour of the (plain, obviously) T-shirt changes. First come, first serve, though, I grab whatever T-shirt is next in the wardrobe, no energy wasted on deciding what to wear.

I've got the added bonus of no seasons, nor any other weather variations to speak of, so there's no need to keep adjusting the outfit to different temperatures or whatever. Highly recommended.

Do you ever struggle with getting bored with some routines.

everythingalsocan ,

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Oh I wish. ;)
At work I can't settle into routines because I can't adjust when people interrupt me.
At home I still have gaping holes in my routines. While my morning routine is thankfully settled pretty much down to the minute, whatever I do after work is usually accompanied by the strong feeling "I should be doing something else instead" (the joy of executive dysfunction).
For whatever routines I do have, small variations are enough to keep me from getting bored.

Do you need routines but actually dislike them at the same time?

everythingalsocan ,
@everythingalsocan@blackrock.city avatar

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I still haven't figured out how to use routines effectively.
On one hand, I tend to fall into routines easily, which works quite well, saves a lot of mental effort, and keeps me going even when I'm too exhausted to know what I'm doing.
On the other hand, the smallest change can cause all routines to fall apart.
So I keep tweaking, rebuilding, ...., spending several days being completely unproductive before I try something new to keep me going... meh.

Some autistic people experience meltdowns or shutdowns.

When I get overstimulated I tend to shutdown.

If you experience either of these, or both, which is more prevalent for you?

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Oh, that would rather neatly explain the years I spent hiding in dark rooms because my brain would shut down (a feeling of all energy drained and no ability for any clear thoughts), and avoiding lights was the only way to recover from that state.

Bright lights could trigger that state within minutes or less, and while darkness gave some relief, it still took hours to fully recover.

Does that fit?

There are common triggers that can lead some autistic people to experience a meltdown or a shutdown.

Do you have any?

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Many of those can get very stressful very quickly, but what really does it for me are conflicting instructions.
Whether at work or in social settings, I'll end up with a strong imperative to do something but no idea what to do, as any choice is wrong at that point.
Bonus points if people refuse to clarify because they don't see the problem.

At that point I'm stuck and pretty much unable to do anything any more for the rest of the day.

Watching the same show over-and-over again is one way I regulate the autistic side of my brain. But the ADHD side sure gets bored sometimes.

Do you watch any shows on repeat?

everythingalsocan ,

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Not TV shows, but there are songs that I listen to (pretty much literally) every day for years.
Some 20 years ago it used to be Bat Out Of Hell, to stay awake while driving, nowadays it's Secrets / Far Above The Clouds (part of Tubular Bells III), to focus while working.

These songs both take me on an emotional rollercoaster and provide a comforting sense of familiarity, the perfect mix. :)

Do you find most social interactions to be stressful and energy draining?

@autism101 @actuallyautistic That's what an online conversation feels like (the type where you get a few hours to reply). Plenty of time to think carefully about how to respond.
Live conversations feel more like chess with a timer next to the board.

The more I think about it the more I like that analogy. :) With a chess clock it would be perfect.
