I don’t think this person believes that people are actively making up intrusive thoughts or talking about something that doesn’t happen. It seems like they’re saying that thoughts, any thoughts, are our imagination, intrusive or otherwise.

dragonflyteaparty ,

It depends on how you think about it. I think of it as giving my kids a piece of myself in my love and effort to care for them. They are their own people, but they carry a part of me, just as I carry a part of my parents and those who helped shape me into the person I am.

Airlines will make a record $118 billion in extra fees this year—their websites are designed to get you to pay (www.fastcompany.com)

Airlines will make a record $118 billion in extra fees this year—their websites are designed to get you to pay::Airlines are piling on fees for checked bags, assigned seats, and other extras. Here’s how their websites pressure fliers into paying for them.

I’m fairly certain they don’t think people should work for free, but that the cost of a surgery shouldn’t be several bills to the hospital, the doctor, the anesthesiologist, the nurses, and wherever else they come up with who want s separate bill. When I go to the grocery store, it’s not like I pay the cashier, the stocker, the store itself, and the manager. It’s so confusing when you have to pay several different parties whose bills come in weeks to months after the surgery.

Parents Sue Gaming Companies Over ‘Video Game Addiction’, Because That’s Easier Than Parenting (www.techdirt.com)

Parents Sue Gaming Companies Over ‘Video Game Addiction’, Because That’s Easier Than Parenting::Video game addiction. Sigh. Big sigh, even. Like, the biggest of sighs. We’ve talked about claims that video game addiction is a documentable affliction in the past, as well as the pushback that claim has received from...

dragonflyteaparty ,

Social contacts or social contracts? Does gambling fall under this? I could see someone arguing that some of these games are essentially gambling.

dragonflyteaparty ,

It’s also like when you ignore that video game makers research and develop how to make their game as addictive as possible and ignore an entire thread talking about it. Oh wait…

dragonflyteaparty ,

Seems a bit hyperbolic considering the numbers.

In 2023, the Army and Air Force fell short of their respective goals by around 10,000 recruits, while the Navy was under by 6,000.

dragonflyteaparty ,

How about gaia? No one is on it anymore. That’s where I first started to learn HTML.

dragonflyteaparty ,

No it’s not. One isn’t the greatest, sure. But the other actively wants to make the US a Christian theocracy.

dragonflyteaparty ,

Isn’t it sad that you ignore that the Republican presidents didn’t close gitmo either and that Trump actually increased the drone strikes?

dragonflyteaparty ,

So, every single person can do exactly what you did and have every single opportunity that you had?

dragonflyteaparty ,

So for electrical fires, they use carbon dioxide to smother the fire and sodium bicarbonate to aid in putting it out, along with class c fire extinguishers. Class c are just carbon dioxide.

For chemical fires, carbon dioxide extinguishers are also used. They can use extinguishers with bromochlorodifluoromethane, aka Halon 1211, (which I guess could be a pfas chemical, but I don’t find anything either way).

dragonflyteaparty ,

I don’t know. Lucifer seems like he had some good ideas.

dragonflyteaparty ,

If you’re looking for quotes, where’s the quote to prove that she voted for anyone?

dragonflyteaparty ,

What I’ve seen in this thread is people asking for evidence. If it really could have been Hamas or the another Palestinian group, don’t you think they’d be bombing the shit out of Israel? Until there’s real proof one way or the other, all we have is he said/she said.

dragonflyteaparty ,

No, they’re not just asking questions. They’re also making statements and seemingly implying that only people who fully transition are transgender and every trans person must also identify as male or female because non-binary is a “fad” that people made up and doesn’t really exist.

dragonflyteaparty ,

No… I’m pretty sure the point was that Canada is still doing something right.

dragonflyteaparty ,

O…k… And? Anyone can make a documentary and anyone can say stuff. I’m very confused as to how this is proof.

dragonflyteaparty ,

We could move if we wanted to. We aren’t, at least right now, because we’d leave behind our entire social network. Even if we moved where we know people, they wouldn’t help as much with our two young children. I know and understand and accept that. They don’t have to help with our kids, but we’d lose the people who can. We’d lose our kids friends and the network we are building in the neighborhood, which of course can be rebuilt, but that’s also a consideration. I’d probably only see my sister once a year if that because she can’t leave the state due to a custody agreement. Funds would also be an issue.

I also worry about too many democratic people leaving and making the state more red as a result and leaving behind those who can’t move, like my sister and her kids, who will suffer as a result of increasingly authoritarian laws. Some regressive politicians have outright said that it’s their goal to make it miserable for democratic and liberal people to force them to move, make the state redder, and thereby gain even more power.

dragonflyteaparty ,

Who could have known ahead of time that would happen?

dragonflyteaparty ,

I disagree whole heartedly. Criminalizing things like using drugs during pregnancy leads to criminalizing miscarriages for natural reasons which has absolutely happened. There’s not a ton of cases, but women have gone to jail for having a miscarriage after saying they wanted an abortion based on the idea that they must have killed their fetus.

dragonflyteaparty ,

But only if you say you love Jesus forever and will follow the church.

dragonflyteaparty ,

So you’re a forced birther. Got it.

dragonflyteaparty ,

No, it’s not good at all. This leads to and has led to women being jailed for natural miscarriages or charged with endangering a fetus for taking prescribed medication or for eating everyday things like sushi and lunch meat. You may think I’m making a slippery slope argument. I’m not. This things have really happened. Women were charged with manslaughter for expressing a possibility of having an abortion, keeping the pregnancy, falling down the stairs, and having a miscarriage. The moment you criminalize a woman’s actions during pregnancy that relate to a fetus is the moment any action that could have any possible negative outcome is suspect. Suddenly women who have had miscarriages are all crime scenes unless proven otherwise. It’s not a slippery slope. Women have and are being jailed for having miscarriages.

VA Attorney General Warns Right-Wing Group To Stop Sending False Info to Voters (www.democracydocket.com)

On Tuesday, Oct. 10, the office of Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares (R) sent a letter to Virginia Voter Assistance, which is a project of the right-wing organization Look Ahead America, warning it to “immediately cease and desist” from sending false and misleading information to voters in Virginia.

dragonflyteaparty ,

So you think politicians should have the protected right to lie to the voters?

dragonflyteaparty ,

So did my then five year old. She had a period where she went through an entire hand soap dispenser every two days until we got her to quit. She still uses shampoo, but as far as we can tell, only (mostly?) when we give her permission. It doesn’t run out super fast.

dragonflyteaparty ,

I disagree completely. Uniforms have been proven to not help with anything they claim to. For one, they generally can’t be bought second hand.

dragonflyteaparty ,

Except anything can be distracting and there’s a certainly a reason why the school girl outfit has so many sexy versions and lingerie. School uniforms are a terrible idea for many reasons. You generally can’t but then second hand, low income families now need two sets of clothing for their kids, and it is possible to buy “higher quality” ones from places like Macy’s.

dragonflyteaparty ,
  1. Two approved colors, red and blue, are generally gang colors.
  2. No, they’re not. You generally can’t buy then second hand. I’ve never seen uniforms at a resale store.

Australians vote No in referendum that promised change for First Nations people but couldn’t deliver (www.cnn.com)

With a two-letter word, Australians have struck down the first attempt at constitutional change in 24 years, major media outlets reported, a move experts say will inflict lasting damage on First Nations people and suspend any hopes of modernizing the nation’s founding document....

dragonflyteaparty ,

From the article it seemed that a big criticism of the amendment was that it was too vague. There were people from different political beliefs and some aboriginals who didn’t like how vague it was, though the aboriginals wanted it to further.

dragonflyteaparty ,

Huh, in the US we use it as a term for a violent group of people. Does it not mean that in Australia?

dragonflyteaparty ,

Ours has a function where you press and hold one of the numbers and it turns off the beeps. Not sure what it is anymore, but most people should be able to look it up and find one for their microwave.

dragonflyteaparty ,

No, actually they’re not. One paragraph about the in-laws, particularly the mother-in-law, does not characterize the whole situation or the birth mother. What does, though, is the mother-in-law stating that she’ll support the birth mother’s decision no matter what. Did you miss that bit?

dragonflyteaparty ,

Sure, but I don’t really think that pertains to the parents here. It’s the dad’s family who’s hardcore Christians.

dragonflyteaparty ,

Or the cops told him that they had plenty of evidence to convict, scared him with a lengthy prison sentence, and he chose a plea deal because he viewed it as exactly that, a deal for a lesser punishment.

A Lab Test That Experts Liken to a Witch Trial Is Helping Send Women to Prison for Murder in Multiple U.S. States (www.propublica.org)

The “lung float” test claims to help determine if a baby was born alive or dead, but many medical examiners say it’s too unreliable. Yet the test is still being used to bring murder charges — and get convictions....

dragonflyteaparty ,

ProPublica then contacted the 12 medical examination offices and discovered that only two actually used the test at all, and none of them considered the results definitive proof of live birth.

Source?

Note that they were aware of which offices had performed the 11 tests they were aware of, and yet they could not find anyone willing to “[express] full-throated support for the test.”

This is the full quote. “None of the 12 largest offices by jurisdiction expressed full-throated support for the test.” They didn’t state that the 12 largest offices were the ones who performed the tests. What you posted was taken out of context and given new context.

Here’s the surrounding context to give more insight. Nowhere did they state that these 12 offices who didn’t express support for the test are the ones who did the test.

" Cook County, home to Chicago, pathologists use it, but give more weight to “more reliable methods” including X-rays, microscopic examinations and autopsy findings to determine whether a birth was live or still. Others, like the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, said the test may be useful only if a baby was not born into a toilet, CPR was not performed and decomposition was not present. None of the 12 largest offices by jurisdiction expressed full-throated support for the test.

And while the national organization that represents medical examiners said that it doesn’t have an official stance on the lung float test, it said it “strongly advocates using scientifically validated and evidence-based practices in forensic pathology.” The National Association of Medical Examiners called the lung float test “a single, dated test” that has not been subjected to the organization’s rigorous evaluation process."

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

dragonflyteaparty ,

I wouldn’t. The vast majority of people are not tech savvy and generally just go with whatever the default is.

dragonflyteaparty ,

Their point still stands.

You’ve just spent $400 on a baby monitor. Now you need a subscription | Once upon a time there was a company called Miku who wasn’t making quite enough money... (www.theregister.com)

You’ve just spent $400 on a baby monitor. Now you need a subscription | Once upon a time there was a company called Miku who wasn’t making quite enough money…::Once upon a time there was a company called Miku who wasn’t making quite enough money…

dragonflyteaparty ,

I actually agree with this. We use a big fan at night that’s really loud. With the baby’s door closed and the fan on, I wouldn’t hear her unless she cried super loud or screamed. I personally think it’s nuts that some people never used a baby monitor. There’s no way I wouldn’t have one.

dragonflyteaparty ,

Exactly what part was “misinformation”? Are you trying to say that the celebration wasn’t peaceful?

dragonflyteaparty ,

It does seem like it would fall under “no discrimination based on ancestry”, but I feel like a lawyer could argue otherwise.

dragonflyteaparty ,

Anyone can pee and stand. It’s just whether or not you make a giant mess of it, but you don’t have to be female to do that.

dragonflyteaparty ,

They laid on it and rubbed scent markers all over it. It’s theirs now. 🤷

dragonflyteaparty ,

Don’t listen to them. They’re exaggerating. Fuck cars is about wanting infrastructure to make more places walkable, not insisting everywhere must be walkable or accessible by public transit. Even though that would be cool, that’s so far from the actual truth.
