Isn’t it just changing some flags, toggling some options, debranding and disable basic telemetry? I honestly don’t know, last time I checked was a long time ago.

All reasonable and logical things. But someone bullied accumulates permanent damage for rest of their lives. A bully should expect full repercussions to the max. I sure wished a bunch of them would get run over by cars of broken some legs. They deserve it.

devfuuu ,

If they believe someone is a criminal already then just escalate things and appear in their houses in the middle of the night while they are sleeping. Worse than a bully only supportive parents. They all deserve the same treatment.

The crypto highly annoys me too and I was against it, but we can turn it off and nothing changes which is good. I still believe the dev time should have gone elsewhere. But I’m not as bothered as I was in the begining. Same with stories, never used it before signal in other platforms and had to study wtf they were when it appeared on signal. Now I can see and understand a bit of the use case but I have never seen any of my dozens of friends that use signal use that feature. Still something that can be turned off. I’ve used it to share memes.

Anyway, they claimed heavily that there were markets that would absolutely require that feature since people are used to it in other chat platforms, and if it really brings people to a better platform that is signal I’m ok with it. What I’d really like to see is if the claim now holds true or not and understand if the dev and money time spent in those features really got more users in the app or not and if it was worth the cost vs other features.

Exactly because I have the same phone number for almost 30 years, that is the problem. It’s too deep interlaced with my real and personal identity and I regard it as a very private thing that only few people should have.

I don’t get the idea that a phone number should just be randomly given as if it was natural.

It’s good to have it as an option for example so my mother can use it simply and quickly, but when I go to a conference and want to connect to new people which are still strangers and will and don’t give my phone number. So in those situations I have to randomly use other chat system or share emails? When signal already is in my pocket and my main chat application 99% of the time and is perfect for 1 to 1 friendly chats?

I’d be ok with a credit card verification or so something like that, even if still uncomfortable for me, but I hear it reduces a lot of spam.

But then that would make people confused and make them run away when the app seems to be free and now is asking for a credit card validation… it’s too strange.

Anyway I never got a single spam message on signal from all the years I use it, so not sure how others view the problem or even if it is a problem.

Basically the gamification and moneyfication that for example discord uses which are basically gimmicks for dumb things like animated avatars or special stickers and we clearly know there are a bunch of people that actually fall for it and give money to feel superior for having those things.

We’ve known the big bad since the first season of Loki and from Ant-man at least.

devfuuu ,

And the biggest surprise: new hair starts to grow out of nowhere in the nose and ears.

devfuuu ,

I heard they have eggs washed at supermarkets, what would you expect?

Completely agree. I keep trying to open a new session on a clean new user regularly to check if it works and it is absolutely horrible. 3 days ago after updating the system and seeing some new latest kde versions coming in, tried again and noped the out of it in a few minutes. The fonts and scalling in so many places are very bad.

I keep reading about great improvements in the 6 version and am really hopeful for it to be usable.

Or the problem is just that no developers have normal regular laptops that are 14’’ at 1080p and can’t imagine that proper scaling at 125% and 150% needs to work out of the box.

Edit: I don’t even have nvidia hardware, it’s just regular intel stuff. Can’t imagine the struggle of nvidia folks.

devfuuu ,

My 12’’ was the great computer that was with me most of the time I was in university. Great little machine and portable as fuck.

devfuuu ,

Oh the good old days of suffering from a distro based on the US that has to follow the stupid laws of software patents and problems coming from all that shit.

One of the top reasons to use Arch when I started because of the pragmatic approach of do not giving a fuck.

devfuuu ,

The problem of keeping comparing and doing analogies with apple shit stuff is that many of us have no idea what tech of magic apple does, so saying things like “just like apple” is a completely useless phrase that gives zero info whatsoever about anything.

devfuuu ,

as someone who just was forced (impossible to rent houses at affordable prices) to move from the big city into a random small town in the country , I fucking felt this in my heart.

Something knowledge is power I guess?

Most Water-Repellent Surface Ever Created Challenges Existing Ideas on Friction (thedebrief.org)

A team of researchers says they have created the most water-repellent surface ever, challenging existing ideas about how friction works. Known as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), the ingenious new surface, which is assembled at the molecular level, has the potential to impact hundreds of commercial and industrial applications,...

I know tech literate people that don’t use one and it drives me crazy up to walls when I see them use the internet.

devfuuu ,

So glad that in my country almost all banks provide that service.

devfuuu ,

That’s what we all say to ourselves.

panicsWhich day??? Did I sleep more than 24h again??

It’s amazing that last year when I was looking for a new phone, the one I bought was one of the smallest I could find - asus zenfone. Same physical size as my precious sony, just a few grams heavier. I’m super happy with it and ny other phone seems super huge in comparison.

It was the key drug being deployed during the covid war. I survived tks to it. Saw god a few times.

devfuuu ,

some web3 crypto bull stuff I think.

devfuuu ,

There were lots of variables to ensure a good cd was burned correctly. Quality of the burner, the quality of cds (from having used hundreds of them, they really had varying qualities) and a big one was the speed of the burn. Lot’s of cds did not work for me when the burning speed was too high, for a good one to happen it had to be done in low speed. Also software to burn them sometimes fucked things up, I remember a time when Nero was destroying a bunch of my cds.

And then the copy protections of some influenced many copies, some made it very difficult. But at least we had cracks and all the warez around. Good times.

For sure, constant instant rewarding mechanisms and not practising delayed rewarding in no way whatsoever will do great.

devfuuu ,

If it makes money to someone, fuck the planet. We all know how capitalism works at this point.

devfuuu ,

Definitely. It improves recently (like 2 last versions) and was a big thing when the fractional support was added, since now some software can finally be usable. But I still have too many problems regarding seepd, animations, different sizes of things in different places, mouse cursors being wrong, crashes or lock ups sometimes happen, etc.

But it’s getting there and am really hopeful for next version and how good it could be.

Really want to finally be able to properly use my external monitor with the laptop monitor also connected at different sizes and fractional settings.

devfuuu ,

The most basic and obvious thing is that external monitors with different DPIs than the laptop screen will finally work correctly.

devfuuu ,

But but Compiz and burning windows and cube… The times are not the same.

devfuuu ,

Would be great for the tv screen with 4k and hdr that I have around for example.

devfuuu ,

That’s xfce.

devfuuu ,

I think it’s a feature of some tilling window managers that allow to put each virtual desktop assigned to each different monitors. So instead of the normal thing where when connecting an external monitor it extends the area of the virtual desktop, you could have the virtual 1 on the laptop monitor and the external with the desktop 2, so you could easily switch desktops that could have different windows, for example changing laptop monitor to virtual desktop 3 and keep external monitor with desktop 2.

I’ve never used it, but after hearing about this for the first time some time ago it made so much fucking sense compared to the chaotic way that normal window managers behave that I really want to experiment with it.

Assuming that I’m describing this correctly.

devfuuu ,

Oh, I like these topics and was until recently frustrated because kwallet didn’t implement secret service, but nowadays it does so most things should be working correctly.

I’ve recently been trying to change my usages to use keepass, so I’ve been disabling kwallet, so, what are your current problems with kwallet?

devfuuu ,

This seems a problem for the login manager and kernel framebuffer before plasma/kwin even gets involved.

devfuuu ,

Maybe Arcan will be a thing to experiment with.

devfuuu ,

I think it had at one point and was removed.

devfuuu ,

Flashing problem?

devfuuu ,

With some mobile apps, in app currency and some gamiffication (aka predatory tactics) like trophies and leader boards and pay for win features, I could see making lots of money from poop a very legit business.

devfuuu ,

There’s also the very usual problem of the scope of the tasks not being well defined and many times too big, so juniors get overwhelmed and it’s difficult for them to focus on small things to actually progress or identify that they are blocked.

I remember well that when I was junior and not having yet a proper notion of when to call it “I’m blocked” since many times it seems one is blocked but is not, like spending 1 or 2 days reading and understanding the code and how all things work are very legitimate things, which are needed to even know what to ask about. But other times I was actually blocked but could not understand that I was because it felt I was just trying to understand the code and was actually going in circles not knowing when to stop.

It’s all a balance, but the one important thing to do is communicate about it, not just a “I’m doing it”. Usually pairing with someone and take some time to explain the “thought process” and the “current understanding” helps a lot. But, a junior kinda stuck will many times not ask for that time. What I usually do is just after a daily be the one to approach the junior and ask him to pair for a while to help him, without him even asking. Many times this solves the problem.

devfuuu ,

Yeah, had a similar experience in a place I worked where people wrote in slack the things for the day. It was too much and too noise too and people would not read or care. It’s too annoying and people felt disconnected anyway.

The important thing is really to have a strong arm and focus on the time. I think all the problems I ever had and they were solved in dailes was exactly because someone was enforcing time and not allowing others to say too much or derail the daily in useless details or their tasks or problems.

devfuuu ,

It really depends on what is the size of the team, which according to many should not be more than 6 or 7 people. And one core ppint is not everyone should be forced to say “something”, one should speak if they have anything relevant to add.

I’ve had many meetings where it’s just opening the board, asking everyone if everything looks good or anything blocked, everyone says it seems good and the meeting is ended in 2 minutes.

devfuuu ,

Where’s the lemmu tech nightmare stories community when it’s needed.

devfuuu ,

Also don’t forget timezones. Just because the employees could be having meetings at that time doesn’t mean the contractor is not in a different TZ and that could be fucking early or late and not fit their defined work hours if they even had a specific time to start and end work, they could just have a “core hours” thing and manage their day time as they see fit.
