I don’t feel like they’re the poster child for enshittification; I still use Facebook the same as I did in 2006. It got worse, true, but it’s not enshittification worse. It’s worse because every cunt with a phone can get on from their phones. I don’t feel it’s enshittification as there’s no fees and it still serves the same basic function of keeping in touch with friends/family and uploading photos. How do you feel it was enshittified?

If they were charging for photo storage or a certain number of friends, or fees for business pages, I’d agree. I don’t see monitization or the ruthless pursuit of profit as the main force behind why Facebook sucks these days.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

Seems like boiling hard water followed by filtration would do the trick. Decanting after letting the water sit for a while, to allow precipitates to fall to the bottom, could work also.

You’re not supposed to drink the flocculated plastic particles. You still have to decant or filter the boiled water; this just makes it easier to remove the microplastics by increasing the particle size.

I build ratio on private trackers by getting as much freeleech stuff as I can, even though I might not be into it. Timing is key also, I’ll snatch anything I think will blow up. I don’t feel it’s a downgrade at all. I get nearly as good download as my home connection and significantly faster upload. Never had any issues with 5G or 5G UC. T-mobile and iPhones.

IME rain and humidity has little to no effect. I can get 900mbps in clear skies or in a torrential downpour as long as I’m not behind multiple walls. The single wall I have to contend with at work (not counting cube walls) barely affects reception. If I’m standing under the tower I can get 1gbps.

People have been listening to music without an algorithm for hundreds of years. Even digitally, algorithms for discovery are fairly new. What’s so different about how you listen to music?

Napster was not great for discovery. These were the days of 56k modems. Even with 128k mp3s it took a while to download a song. Idk, maybe I used it differently, but Napster was definitely a “look for specific song” application.

Discovery came later with Kazaa and DC++ and the beginnings of broadband.

I get it. I really enjoyed Spotify’s recommendations, but I had to quit as part of my “fuck streaming” pledge. My questions were genuine, I hope they didn’t come off as antagonistic.

I switched to Plex / Plexamp, and I have to say whatever algorithm they’ve implemented has greatly helped me discovery things in my local library. It does a great job at “vibe mixing”, by that I mean you’re not going to shuffle from rock to classical to electronic. It’s even nailed some transitions that were both beat- and keymatched.

Might be more than you’re willing to undertake, but it allowed me to drop the Spotify sub.

Google was not really popular in 99-01, nor did modems have the bandwidth to do two things at once effectively. How would you “get an idea”? Streaming audio barely existed outside of some RealPlayer things.

I dunno, I was active in piracy at this time and many, many more people knew about Napster than Google. Napster was news worthy in 1999; Google was not. Google is much more of a 00s phenomenon. You’ve got 9/11 between the two. Napster happened before all that.

It could be all in how I used it, but I’d herald the beginning of discovery right there with the widespread availability of 5Mbps cable broadband in the US, so early 00s, right there with the rise of Google. Napster is a bit early for that IMO. I understand you could but most people didn’t as 56k speeds really limited discovery by library browsing, not to mention poor tagging / file name etiquette.

By the time DC++ had risen in popularity, around 03-04, this was prime time library browsing piracy times.

Eh, whether or not we agree or disagree, it was fun to recall the early days of my journey. Have a good one.

What you describe is why I don’t think electronics should be in implants. “Dumb” implants already have issues; adding electronics will only increase the issues.

You can’t hold complex electronics to the same lifespan as a wrench, or replacement hip, no matter how well built they are.
