Highly doubt it, because pretty much all games are compiled for x86, and would require dynamic recompilation, which I’m turn costs performance.

Or… they could perform the recompilation beforehand just like the precompiled shaders. Hmmm… that would make it pretty viable!

I’m using AdGuard, which is pretty similar. I had issues with my Sonos speakers. The devices couldn’t find the speakers until I set a few servers on the whitelist.

Apart from that, all’s good.

I had so many arguments with my team lead. He thought comments were an antipattern because that meant the code wasn’t expressive enough.

I understood where he was coming from, but a little hint here and there why the fuck the code is doing what it’s doing would’ve been nice.

Enter the Void is the most breathless barrage on the senses I have ever wittnessed. The intro could give you epilepsy. The whole film is shot from the ego perspective of the protagonist that gets shot dead 15 minutes into the film. I have never seen anything remotely similar.

I think it’s crazy that they want to write invoices based on estimations. Why didn’t I ever do that? “Oh yeah, I estimate that I worked about um… 2 weeks on that feature.”

What are some commonly known facts that are too bizarre for you to believe to be true?

For me it is the fact that our blood contains iron. I earlier used to believe the word stood for some ‘organic element’ since I couldn’t accept we had metal flowing through our supposed carbon-based bodies, till I realized that is where the taste and smell of blood comes from.

Ever since my father passed I’ve got his old motorcycle standing around. So first thing would be a driver’s license for motorcycling. But I’m already taking classes so that’s that. And the biggest lesson is what a money sink this hobby can be.

Then I’ll need a motorcycle - either get the old thing working again or get a new one. Or why not both? Because the old one’s 30 years old and doesn’t have ABS.

And the third thing would be a Bambu Lab P1 3d printer. I don’t need the speed but damn do they look good.

It’s a BMW K75 that’s been standing around for about 10 years, an inline 3 with injection and shaft drive. I’m hoping it won’t need much more than new tires, fluids and filters. But even if it turns out cheaper than a newer bike, I’m not sure if a resucitated old bike like that is the best choice starting out.

Like, I get comments from people telling me it’s weird I always try to peel potatoes like I am trying to make the worlds longest 1-piece potato peel. To me it feels way for efficient and fun to continu down a potato in 1 peel, while circling around it, instead of randomly scraping a hundred different pieces of peel off and...

I was pretty impressed by what I saw from Kotlin. Pragmatic and terse, not as academic as Java. Reminds me of the shift away from EJB to Spring. Have been reading up on Rust and thought that with the LVM and WebAssembly (also for the backend), it is perfectly positioned as an alternative. What do you think?

Maybe this is the socialist European in me, but I can’t believe that. Without a contract, the employer isn’t obligated to pay you at all and you’re not obligated to work. Even if it’s just sealed with a handshake, there is a legal framework for both parties. If you just treat it all like an EULA and say whatever, just let me work for you and it’ll work out, then that’s your problem.

I’d like to know what to do next. I’m at a juncture in my career - my current gig is dragging me down, and I think I kinda maneuvered myself into a disadvantageous position.

Since forever, I’ve been a developer, sometimes leading small teams, sometimes working in committees on data interchange formats for the industry sector. Two years ago, I had the opportunity for a position as enterprise architect in a large corporation. Truth is, I still just have theoretical knowledge of what I’m supposed to be doing and feel like I’m floundering pretty bad. And corporate life is sucking out the joy in my life - so much time spent asking around what to do to adhere to process. But on the other hand, I am doing quite well financially.

Building things gives me joy - even if it’s just doing a little optimization to shave off a few milliseconds off a database request. Sitting in meetings and going over spreadsheets is not joyful. It’s been so long since I’ve been in the zone editing code. Generally, it’s been about 3 years since I’ve been coding. I’ve been considering going back, but I have no idea how to spin it in interviews - and my coding skills are dead.

Rotary engines are wankel engines, which are only used by Mazda in their cars. If the cylinders are arranged radially it’s called a radial engine. IIRC, one of the very few helicopters to have a radial motor was the Sikorsky S-58, which saw action in the Vietnam War. But generally pretty much all helicopters have turbines.

My Opinion: NewPipe, Piped, Invidious, etc's days are numbered.

With Reddit shutting down its API setting a precedent in the corporate tech world (and Reddit was a major outlier in that a ton of their users are technical minded and support third party clients, YouTube does not have that kind of userbase and will not get backlash for it), Twitter doing whatever the fuck they’re doing, and...

This is why it is so super important to educate kids on media and tech literacy. They need to understand that YouTube is not the only source of videos, that you can not only buy your stuff on Amazon, and that Google is not the only place to search. They need to know that nothing is free, and that they are being monitored. And that there are choices.

I was super mad with our kid’s school, because they only allowed the kids to have Microsoft office. It’s not about the tools - they’ll change by the time they graduate - but about the results.

Main purpose is to not have endless sheets of paper laying around, but to scan Documents I recieve and then throwing them away so that I only have them digitally and can print stuff out only...

Our Samsung color laser AIO was getting flaky, especially for net access. I replaced it with an Epson EcoTank AIO and it’s been absolutely hassle-free.

I was apprehensive at first, because using inkjet printers back in the 90s was just painful. But so far, never had clogging and hardly ever had a paper jam. I’d say the running costs are comparable or lower than laser.

Color laser printers always run out of yellow because they inline a yellow fingerprint. AFAIK this isn’t the case with inkjets. So savings and additional privacy there.

Are there any good Blu-ray ripping software for Linux?

I’m well aware that I can rip most Blu-rays with MakeMKV and then convert to mp4 with Handbrake; however, the former just rips everything raw from the disk so the file size is humongous and the conversion via Handbrake for just a single file is terribly long and puts a lot of strain on my computer....

IIRC, you only need 2 pass if you need to fit a size target. So you can safely deactivate both options.

I got an Epson ecotank printer. It doesn’t work out of the box with Linux, but there are drivers and it does the job. Otherwise it’s been pretty dependable.

Glancing over the website, I thought it’s an immutable OS, like Fedora Silverblue. I could imagine that it might be cool to use with Ansible and stuff. But for an average user? I can’t really see the advantages in respect to the work you have to put in.
