In 1974, "The Wiz" debuted in Baltimore, Md. It reimagined "The Wizard Of Oz," centering Black culture and helping "usher in a new era of Black theatrical storytelling," writes NPR's Mitra L. Arthur. A new version is now on Broadway, and will tour next year. Dorothy, The Wiz, Aunt Em, the Scarecrow, Tinman and the Lion visited the Tiny Desk studio to perform seven songs, ending with Dorothy/Nichelle Lewis's performance of "Home." "As Lewis’ fellow cast members enveloped her in hugs after her performance, we were reminded of the same lessons that Dorothy learns in the show: Home isn’t just a physical space, it’s the people who build you up and love you," writes Arthur.

The End of Everything by Victor Davis Hanson, 2024

“In The End of Everything, Hanson tells compelling and harrowing stories of how civilizations perished. He helps us consider contemporary affairs in light of that history, think about the unthinkable, and recognize the urgency of trying to prevent our own demise.” — H. R. McMaster, author of Battlegrounds

@skatercat @appassionato Accurate, though. At the end of every empire, it was the end of life as everybody at the time was used to, and presumed to continue indefinitely. It's amusing how certain religions keep prepared for "end times" when we've already had several.

It was a nice country while we had it, y’all.

Remember the good times.

Write down your memories, thoughts, and feelings.

Future historians will use them to reconstruct what happened.

That was literally the premise of A Handmaid’s Tale.

@paninid I haven't asked around but I strongly suspect so. Such people are described in Israeli media as "liberal Jews", which would include "non-practicing" Jews. I've had debate run-ins with (this seems to me quite the oxymoron) atheist Jews who are in fact rabidly Zionist. I heard an author being interviewed in passing, didn't catch his name but his catch phrase is quite timely: something to the effect of--in a one-eyed world, the two-eyed are the marginalized.

Day 25 @blackmastodon

Meet Beverly Lorraine Greene, believed to be the 1st Black woman architect in the US. Registered as architect in 1942 in Chicago, after much discrimination she was hired to help plan a house project in NY which, due to segregation, she would not be able to live in. Even in her short life, she inspired many others to come, in the field.

Read more about her here: https://www.blackpast.org/african-american-history/greene-beverly-loraine-1915-1957/

@thepoliticalcat @kshernandez I actually have a book about that, but I'm also sure it doesn't have a comprehensive list. So many more to discover yet, I'm sure.

The colony of South Carolina was the most radical one south of Virginia.

They’ve always been radical.

Nothing much has changed.

@paninid That's an oversimplification, Runyan. Complex problems don't lend themselves tosimplistic answers. Plantation captains of industry couldn't live without extracting labor they didn't have to pay much for and you see that even today with attempts to roll back child labor laws in the face of stemming the tide of illegal immigrants, whom they hire for the purpose of wage theft because they know they won't file a complaint with the Labor Department....and then whine in public about illegal immigration. NeoConfederates are the scumbags of the earth.

claralistensprechen3rd ,

@paninid I don't understand your comment, Sampath. Only Runyan50 can explain any root of Runyan 50 comments. Who called you what, exactly, and where? Identified as such what, exactly?

claralistensprechen3rd ,

@paninid So are you, apparently. What you're talking about isn't in this one, and I suspect a deletion somewhere.

claralistensprechen3rd ,

@paninid Then I remain in the dark as to the nature of your subsequent comment because there's no way I can answer for Runyan and whatever it may have been that he called you, a thing I still see missing from your citation.

Staff make the call when it comes to deciding what's age-appropriate at their libraries. In Idaho, an organization called Parents Against Bad Books claims parents should have a say, while in Washington State, a proposal would require libraries to use a system like the one used by the movie industry, and in Florida, there's a formal challenge process under the "Don't Say Gay" law. NPR breaks down the situation.
