I am on Mastodon, Lemmy and PixelFed.

  • Difficulties: On Mastodon I had two accounts on different instances. It took some some to decide which to keep and which to deactivate. Not a big problem, as I am not a very active user.
I’ve been using Lemmy since the early days. It was harder to choose an instance on Lemmy than Mastodon.
I have never managed to find a PeerTube instance that I could use for uploading.
So, main difficulty would be time spent lookin for instances.
  • Challenges: I have never really spent time trying to attract users. When describing it to some people they liked the idea, but wouldn’t move to a social network where their friends were not.
  • Experience: Positive overall. I have had exactly one confusing problem with another user. I will say that there are some strongly opinionated people on Fedi. Instances do create groupthink which can lead to biases, but I was aware of that before onboarding.
  • Feedback: The Fediverse is a good social network for many different people. It appears to me that Fedi can be quite welcoming to neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ communities. There is a political leaning, at least on the instances I see. I wouldn’t say there is a slant, but when opposing opinions collide, wording matters because is a thing. I am of the opinion that improvement should come about organically. Forcing changes is pointless, unless you are a developer who can suggest a way to make the improvement a reality.
New users to Mastodon (and Fedi as a whole) need to understand that “quote-tooting” isn’t a thing, monetisation isn’t a goal, and it will never be a 1:1 clone of Twitter, Reddit or Instagram.

The US supports Israel because of 'Jewish wealth', claims BBC presenter (www.msn.com)

It’s very difficult to characterize this as an isolated incident of anti-semitism by the BBC considering it’s far from their first incident, and considering further that the BBC has spend 20 years and well over £300,000 keeping the 20,000 word Balen Report into their perceived anti-Israel bias buried....

bbbhltz , (edited )
@bbbhltz@beehaw.org avatar

Just for clarification, in case anyone is in the same situation as me…

Clicking on that link just takes me to the MSN front-page for some reason… The French version, because I live in France. This article is from The Jerusalem Post and the lead is:

The BBC’s Spanish-language service released a program claiming that “Jewish wealth and influence” in the United States is the reason behind the United States’ ongoing support for Israel, according to a translation produced by Jewish News on October 20.

If you speak Spanish you can see the program in question here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=G16Mnq93qL0

Article: www.jpost.com/diaspora/…/article-769435

Conclusion is that of OP: BBC are in hot water.

As a Canadian, as much as I like it when news providers stick to their guns, I think the CBC will also probably need to make some updates to the way they use the “T” words in the future.

This was a game that was on my wishlist… But, I never managed to get it. Even when blockbuster closed and they were selling things off. I went to blockbuster, found it, went to the counter and… Oops, they couldn’t find it because someone had rented it out and never returned it.

Someday I’ll get to play it, I’m sure. Maybe I’ll install an emulator, but it won’t be the same without the controller and the CRT TV.

You took the words out of my mouth. I don’t even know who this guy is really, I’ve seen some of his videos, but having access to all of your account stuff is… nah

A 300MB apk file? It is on Google Play. No F(L)OSS license. Other apps by the same developer (futo) seem to contain no trackers. Probably nothing to worry about, but how many video platforms does the average person use? I look at YT and a small handful of peertube instances.

Wanna play media bias bingo?

From allsides.com/…/how-to-spot-types-of-media-bias

I see a little…

  • Spin
  • Unsubstantiated Claims
  • Sensationalism
  • Slant
  • Omission of Source Attribution
  • Bias by Story Choice and Placement
  • Subjective Qualifying Adjectives
  • Word Choice

Ok, some of those are a stretch…

Either way, the editors are probably happy, they are clickbaity headlines.

Who here uses a less popular Linux distribution? What made you choose it?

Hey fellow Linux enthusiasts! I’m curious to know if any of you use a less popular, obscure or exotic Linux distribution. What motivated you to choose that distribution over the more mainstream ones? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any unique features or benefits that drew you to your chosen distribution.

This is actually a good question. I hope you get some replies from serious gamers.

I am not a serious gamer, but I’ve always preferred keyboards for FPS and RTS games. Years ago when I tried an FPS game for the first time on a console using a controller it was a disaster and took weeks to get used to.

So no keyboard for Hollow Knight (nice avatar, btw)? I couldn’t imagine how horrible I’d be at a game like that on a keyboard!

Are we talking full albums here or tracks and singles?

Beets, the MusicBrainz tagger can handle this.

plugins: lastgenre should load the plugin, but I think you’ve come that far.

In the config.yaml file you’ll also need to tell the plugin to get some tags.

lastgenre:
    auto: yes
    count: 1
    source: artist

I usually keep the count at 1…

If you are importing singletons you need to use the -s option, otherwise importing albums should work.

I know that likely didn’t answer the question, but somebody might find it helpful.

Ex Falso is an OK tagger for manually doing stuff.

2,500 isn’t much. I think many of us here could point you in the right direction for getting loads of high quality music. But, I am not super comfortable dropping names…the first thing listed on this site is a super easy way to get started github.com/Shakil-Shahadat/awesome-piracy#music-d…

Your next problem will be too much music, which is where I am at, but that isn’t a complaint or a flex. It happens when you’ve been hoarding since the '90s.

Israel-Palestine megathread for the remainder of the weekend

the front page is now like half articles on this currently, so it’s probably time for a megathread because none of us want to keep track of 12 threads on this subject and all the resulting comments. only major subsequent developments (for example, boots on the ground; pronunciations by governments; that sort of stuff) will get...

Maps and Misinformation

Sorry, not news or updates, but also not worth creating a thread.

I’ve been seeing lots of maps on Lemmy (mostly in French-speaking communities communities). A number of them look like this:

standard conflict mapshttps://beehaw.org/pictrs/image/df26b2c6-bf6c-4ce1-8216-75e6092a1f8f.webp

And then I’ve seen others that look like this (usually labelled as “fact” or “reality”):

alternative versionshttps://beehaw.org/pictrs/image/089e4f5d-5664-443d-be90-743ff3fa454f.webp

With the exception of an amazing 3-day event that took place in my school (we had some history professors/researchers come in over 3 days and present us arguments from both sides, then moderate a debate…) I received no education about this, and even if I had it would have been about 20 years ago or more.

I suspect we have all seen a version of this map before. I can read the Wikipedia, and watch the documentaries, but where should I look to be able to come to a decision on my own regarding these maps? Meaning, is one of them more factual than the other?

I can tell some of the people commenting here are holding back, but there is an undertone of something here that isn’t very Beehaw

Anyway.

As I live in France, I can confirm that something like this was inevitable. First of all, the politician who called the ban is severely disliked. His name is used as a synonym for poop on the internet. That is just a small detail…

It was more or less decided that he cannot put a blanket ban and would need to ban case by case, but I may have missed something since yesterday.

Through migration and gentrification, France has set itself up for minor disasters such as this. Also, through education. I am from Canada, and I remember learning about this conflict in highschool in the late '90s. But, teenager me didn’t even know at the time what a Muslim was or why religion had anything to do with it. Here in France, students do not learn about it at school, they learn about it from parents. The French way of thinking is always about time, context, and place.

So, last week was the time. Context was terrorism. Place was… Israel. The media here can be quite biased. Lots of younger people have no clue what biased means. They consume lots of YouTube and prefer things to be vulgarised, meaning simplified, and will adopt the opinion of a YouTuber or influencer quite easily. This is contradictory to how the French used to think even 10 years ago.

Since Monday, a fake story about Arabs planning a djihad has been circulating on social media. It is all over French Instagram (my partner showed me) and Telegram too.

Ignorance, fearmongering, bloodlust, racism…all the bad shit could boil over. Adding fuel to the fire is the trend of calling out and doxxing anyone who criticises country A instead of county B.

I think the police will have a busy day and some looters will again take advantage of the situation.

If it’s an epub there are tools to view the metadata. Probably want to de-drm it to start with, if it isn’t drm-free. Then use something like exiftool to view all of the metadata… and you can probably strip it before you share it.

Another place to ask would be the IRC groups that specialise in this.

Strawberry is still active. But I think you need Beets or Picard, as others have mentioned.

There are a handful of other tools that can help with sorting as well. I think Quod Libet and Ex Falso are available on may distros, I used to use Ex Falso for quick manual tagging and pulling in data from other sources.

As for the syncing, I couldn’t help you there. I have used Strawberry for this, for sure, but I tend to drag and drop to my DAP.

Some things to look at:

Is it possible that Handbrake is just copying the audio from the source, and ffmpeg is transcoding it? I make podcast videos for my partner and I have run into problems with audio quality, so I think I have heard what you’re talking about.

Also, what are you running this on? It is possible that the Ffmpeg on your system was not compiled with all the options you need.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis apologize over letters of support for Danny Masterson (abcnews.go.com)

I was the right age for That '70s Show during the original broadcast. Eric was always the character I liked the most, and Grace was the better actor of the bunch. Literally discovered at a high school play. Awesome. He did some great villains over the years (David Duke, holy hell) and when he shows up in random things, like Black Mirror, it’s like, “dang, dude is a pro”…

It was known back then that Scientology had their fingers in the pot on this series. Especially when it ended. That is how I learned about Scientology, in fact.

I am blown away by how successfully these 2 have tanked their careers in the past few days. I mean, they will continue to be in films. But, when the internet is the courtroom and the public is the jury… they’re boned. Predictable apology video? Come on! Just… don’t.

I am so disappointed that one of the defining series of my adolescence is ruined. I am not an emotional person. I am pretty cold about things, in fact. This is not a disappointment fueled by the bubbling rage of the internet. This is sincere. Most of all, I am disappointed that it has taken so long for him to receive his punishment. Those poor people that have had to wait, and retell their stories and nightmares again and again.

Vilmer and Laura will likely make statements, maybe not soon, but hopefully they will do a more believable job than these two. Both were part of the, uh, “belief system” at different points in their lives.

Laura was around the time she dated Danny’s brother. Story goes she left.

Vilmer and Danny were close after the show. I think they went into business. I think they bought the Vista Cruiser from the series together? I don’t remember everything, just watched Entertainment Tonight every evening at dinner because that’s what was on.

Any rss reader which aggregates feeds

On Thunderbird for example, there’s no way to aggregate feeds from different places, into just one common view. I’m looking for aggregating all feeds from different places into a common view, where I can globally just keep what I want to read from everywhere and remove what I’m not interested on....

I live in France, I wanted a phone with buttons that wasn’t just an ODM with a different logo on it. It is an interesting company. I’ve had some contact with them. They are legit going to pull out of China and move production back to France. They uphold their 5 year warranty promise as well.

And, they update their stuff. I’m on Android 13 and apparently older devices are still receiving updates too.

It would be pretty low-key. I wouldn’t want to pry this phone open and then glue it back together. Fairphones are supposed to be rather easy to repair.

It’s a little French-bashing is all. I live in France and haven’t heard a peep about it, even from places like LQDN or Drama.

Article 6 of SREN states that France will follow European law 2022/1925:

  • Browsers will be informed of illegal website urls via a reporting mechanism blah blah blah

Mozilla is pushing against this. They started a petition and now every tech journalist is writing something about it.

So, you’ve been in the BIOS? I’d imagine it is set to UEFI and you’ve disables Legacy option ROMS and secure boot?

Somewhere in the BIOS settings there should be a section or entry called Removable Media Boot/USB boot under “device”, “storage” or “boot”. You’ll need to toggle an option there.
