Yeah why would they pay the “owner”? It’s their platform they do whatever they want. What a dumb thing to complain about.

anteaters ,

Contrary to Twitter banking is regulated and governed by actual laws. It’s a completely different beast. Go ahead and google who the owner of the money in your account is and how that is regulated.

anteaters ,

Yeah they even offered him some bullshit as compensation that they were not required to. Don’t expect decency from a huge company like Twitter.

anteaters , (edited )

TIL the original user of the “@x” account owned it and brought it to Twitter who then took it from him.

anteaters ,

The “dumb thing” to complain about is that they did not pay him any money. It’s a dick move that they took it but I don’t get why anyone would think they would buy it off the “owner”. He was offered some gestures and apparently expected them to want or take it.

anteaters ,

I agree with all of this. I just think it’s idiotic to complain that they didn’t pay him. Twitter handles are not “owned” by the user and the platform can and will do with them whatever they like at any time.

anteaters ,

You might be surprised to learn that you do in fact not “own” your Twitter handle and Twitter is not required to buy it off of you if they want it.

anteaters ,

Absolutely true. But apparently the headlines for this event are all “he got no money for it!”

anteaters ,

Because a celebrity has clout to make a big stink of it. The headline isn’t only “Mean twitter took account from user!” but contains “He got zero dollars for it.” as if he was entitled to that in any way.

Yes that’s literally what everyone is saying. We aren’t asserting “rights” on twitter or something.

I believe that too, but look at the replies - there are people who literally believe they own their account or compare it to personal property or their bank accounts.

anteaters ,

Interpreting this as me approving of Musk’s action is just even more retarded than buying Twitter and renaming it to X.

anteaters ,

Is there a precedent for Twitter buying an account “back” from a user? IIRC all deals regarding Twitter accounts have been made between users.

anteaters ,

Then you might actually be in a different thread. One guy believes this is the same as the bank taking their money and never returning it and another one believes this is like taking people’s belongings because they enter your property.

Is a plex subscription worth it?

I want to unlock the ability to view content on my mobile device. I can do that with a one-time purchase (payed with google opinion rewards) or with a subscription. I want to unlock the ability for my entire family though, across multiple devices. Do I have to pay the “one-time payment” for every device? If so, the plex...

anteaters ,

Jellyfin does hardware transcoding.

anteaters ,

Ah I see, I have misunderstood. I checked and you are correct that it is not possible to download anything but the original file.

anteaters ,

Should have gone “Fuck Reddit” instead. No one outside the bubble knows who or what a u/spez is.

Do people just not use the YouTube subscription feed?

I consistently hear people on YouTube complain that the subscribe button doesn’t do anything for viewers, now that channel notifications are controlled by the bell. But it does do something: it puts the videos from that channel in your subscription feed, which is readily accessible on all versions of YouTube. So why do people...

anteaters , (edited )

TBH I don’t use the subscription feed often. I subscribe to many channels and rarely clean them out after not watching them for years. So that feed is full of videos that I’m not really in the mood for right now but I might watch some day. My home feed is filled with videos that I’m currently in the mood for - from subscribed channels and new ones I can then discover.

Easily concealable size is an excellent choice for a stealthy ship.

anteaters ,

That’s just you. I visit this community for advice on refrigerators.

anteaters ,

I wondered about that myself these days and decided to give each stack its own db. Makes it easier to throw a stack into the bin without having to manually prune the associated databases. I might end up running a database container anyways for tests and side projects and things like that but service stacks get their own db of their choice.

anteaters ,

Yeah, Latin America bitching at Ukraine that they are tired of the war is surely the way to go to convince Ukrainians to stop fighting and just fucking die already. Poor Mercosur countries truly suffer the most from this inconvenience.

anteaters ,

lol BRICS are going strong I see. Is there a more useless group that hates each other more than them?

anteaters ,

Man you people get angry when confronted with reality. Must be exhausting being you.

anteaters ,

It’s fun to see you projecting all your worst fears onto me without knowing anything. Angry, scared little man that you are.

anteaters ,

A little boy seeing evil empires around him that are the reason for his failure is indeed very brave, true.

anteaters ,

lol people are making complete fools of themselves parroting this shit. Of course most of the grain goes to Turkey to travel further from there. Instead of sending ships to fucking Kenya from Ukraine it is much more sensible to get as much as you can out of Ukraine to the next safe harbour - which is Turkey. Apparently these basics are too clever for you lot.

anteaters ,

Ah goold old “show me proof” that you won’t accept anyways. Here’s a question for you: if all the grain vanished into Europe as you say, why have there been no complaints from Africa? Where are the famines that were to happen if Ukraine did not surrender so that Russia allows exports again?

The only complaints from Africa we hear is that Russia’s exit from the deal is a stab in the back. Never did we hear “well the grain never reached Africa anyways” before but now we hear it from the usual useful idiots.

anteaters , (edited )

“source: TASS” 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

anteaters ,

Because TASS is literally fantasy directly from the Kremlin. Not even the people who produce that believe this nonsense. You are truly lost my friend.

anteaters ,

lol won’t even bother to put that into a translation machine because it’ll be worthless garbage. Whining in your native tongue hoping others won’t understand it is always a sign of strength and bravery, right?

anteaters ,

Maybe they’ll bring along some of that grain that they don’t want to allow through the Black Sea. Putin claimed with his big heart that Russia would not let Africa starve after all.

anteaters ,

Damn those NATO sissies and the Satan’s homogays! They are just too powerful in Africa for mighty Russia and god’s holy war.

anteaters , (edited )

Haha I experienced a similar rule during my 9 months. Stationed on Hardthöhe in Bonn they, have a severe rank-inflation going on with all the old generals and admirals marching towards retirement. It was only expected to salute any of the inspectors if youver met them.

Funny thing that I got loads of salutes from fresh soldiers transferred there as I was in the navy and thus had yellow stripes which confused many of the similarly ranked guys from the other branches.

My father used to slather himself in olive oil when we went on vacation and he got a craz, dark tan and never burned. He never got to find out if it led to cancer but he lived into his 70s.

I was always very sceptical ofthis method and always use normal sunscreen.

//edit

Oh and I think he used baby oil for the other thing. Also never went that route and got me some silicone based stuff specifically meant for the purpose.

anteaters ,

He also advised me back then that I should not touch anything if I were to ever travel back in time. That advice I always took to heart.

anteaters ,

So will those be completely under public control or is that like moving Twitter again that gets rate limited in case of an emergency?

Mastodon or Lemmy

So I’ve been starting to look further into the Fediverse and using it a lot more than any other part of the internet at this point. I wanna know the reasons why people might prefer Lemmy or Mastodon, I have both but seem to lean towards Lemmy for some reason, but not sure why maybe it’s the simple design and you can find...

anteaters ,

In Mastodon you can not only follow people but also hashtags. And there are accounts that exist to ‘retweet’ posts related to a topic, so basically curation.

anteaters ,

Yeah them paying in rupees might have been a hint to where it happened.

anteaters ,

Their fantasies didn’t materialize and now the Brexiteers are disappointed and claim their wishful thinking just “failed” instead of realizing it was always garbage.

…wikipedia.org/…/Grand_Ethiopian_Renaissance_Dam

Ethiopia is building a huge dam for energy generation. And Egypt is very worried about it lowering the water levels on the Nile during the filling phase of the dam’s lake and about Ethiopia using it as a weapon against Egypt, controlling an important water source of the Nile.

anteaters ,

When in crisis just choose a minority to shit on and the majority will be happier.

anteaters ,

What has that to do with anything? Reducing single use plastics is environmental protection which is not the same as fighting climate change. No one who fights against plastics does so for climate change. Stop spreading such nonsense. Not even your linked article claims something like that.

anteaters ,

Apparently there are still loads of people who don’t understand this simple fact and think everything that is done to make the world a better place is for climate change.

anteaters ,

Energv wise plastics are often super cheap to produce especially compared to their reusable and non plastic alternatives. IIRC the CO2 footprint is drastically lower for items like bags and straws made of plastic.

anteaters ,

At some point the signatures were regularly larger than the actual posts and they became a laughing stock. Also they often contain information that only the signature’s owner cares about - if he even keeps it up to date.

openSuse. After my years of distro hopping ended over a decade ago I settled on openSuse Leap and never switched to something else again. It’s reliable and gives me the least bullshit. And by now it’s the one I have the most experience in.

//edit
Leap on my server and tumbleweed on my work laptop but Leap would be sufficient there, too.

If intelligent life is found in the universe will it change religion(s)?

…with the James Web Telescope looking for sources of artificial light to identify potential intelligent life, and the news this week of Perseverance searching for microbial life on Mars it feels like we are getting closer to a major discovery. But what - if anything - would it mean for the religions on Earth if life is proven...

anteaters ,

Where did you get that idea from? Even the pope accepts evolution and the big bang as creation history. Religion accepts scientific truth all the time, they just attach “… because of god” to everything.

anteaters ,

That is just as stupid a statement as “scientists believe we evolved from monkeys”. Not even the strongest believers I erer met claimed something like that.

anteaters ,

Some dumbass on youtube is not “they” when we are talking about “abrahamic religion”. How fucking difficult is that for you to understand?
