@negative12dollarbill @Narayoni @bookstodon I don't have the text at hand, but he did indeed write the way his characters would speak, in many, many occasions.

Can you name a film that was adapted not from a novel, but from a short story?
Here's one:

The Illusionist (2006)

@franciscawrites @gevoel @octothorpe @bookstodon Seems consistent. Foundation is a series based on his short stories (then made into a book series) and it goes against the whole thing he wrote about.

adriano ,
@adriano@lile.cl avatar

@janbartosik @franciscawrites @gevoel @octothorpe @bookstodon Oh, I loved the series. The Empire parts especially. But the whole thing about psychohistory is that "things would happen no matter what", and the series goes "Well there's this exact precise woman everything depends on".

adriano ,
@adriano@lile.cl avatar

@franciscawrites @gevoel @octothorpe @bookstodon The Foundation originally was written as a series of published short stories, at least for what then comprised the first book. I don't remember if Asimov wanted them to be a full novel from the start.

Five stars: Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton (2022) is a graphic memoir of time spent in Alberta in some of the worst jobs ever. She worked in the tool cribs of various oil companies in remote places where the men outnumbered women 50 to 1.

Yesterday night I started Pride and Prejudice and I just know Austen was giggling to herself while writing so many of those scenes.

@Rhube @bookstodon I’ve read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but forgotten it.

@Rhube @bookstodon yeah, I don’t think the hordes of the undead are there in the original, for instance

I finished Nona the Ninth last night, and, not gonna lie, by the end I was kinda letting myself go with the flow, as if I was dreaming the story, not reading it.

Look, I was tired. Still, it's a very good book.

@bookstodon What's your favorite book title, whether you've read it or not?

Mine is EVERYONE ON THE MOON IS ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL, by Julian K. Jarboe, which I have not yet read, followed closely by THEY DON'T MAKE PLUS SIZE SPACESUITS, by Ali Thompson, which I have read.

adriano ,
@adriano@lile.cl avatar

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I have read only the beginning, but The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Eréndira and her Heartless Grandmother is a Very Strong Contender.

adriano ,
@adriano@lile.cl avatar

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon the original Spanish "La increíble y triste historia de la cándida Eréndira y su abuela desalmada" is even more poetic

Another variant for networking problems is a "Layer 8" problem.

There's a famous network description model, the OSI Model. It divides networks in seven conceptual layers.

Layer 8 is people.

Reading "Aristotle and Dante dive into the waters of the world" by Benjamin A Saenz

Are teenagers are articulate and sweet like this these days?
When I was a teenager I certainly was not like this. Maybe now I am.

When I read Aristotle and Dante the first part, it was captivating and very moving. Wonder how part two is gonna take.

adriano ,
@adriano@lile.cl avatar

@surya @bookstodon On the one hand, no, they don't. On the other hand, "but they are not common teenagers". On the third hand, still no. Those sentences don't feel teenagey.
