‘Heart of Empire’ is the sequel to Bryan Talbot’s masterpiece, ‘The Adventures of Luther Arkwright’. It’s a much slicker comic, less profound maybe, but a brilliant and subversive slice of high-octane entertainment.

The Ring meets Empire Records in THE NASTY , a coming-of-age horror story splattered with dark comedy, as a group of horror movie-loving teens bites off more than they can handle when the most sought-after video nasty ever slips through their fingers, and they are forced to film their own video nasty slasher movie – where evil, screams, and nightmares bleed into reality.
This amazing graphic novel is a perfect blend of new style and good storytelling!
Panchaud uses dots for his characters, and they really make the reading experience come alive. The story (a sad little boy fights for his happiness) is not so new, but the telling of it is with a lot of excitement.

Five stars: Plain Jane and the Mermaid by Vera Brosgol (2024) is a YA graphic novel that combines all the author's favorite underwater folktales in one story. Jane is facing homelessness now that her parents are dead because women aren't allowed to inherit property. Her only option for keeping the estate is to get married. The man she proposes to, though, ends up kidnapped by a mermaid!
This graphic novel is a sweet and fun read, but sharing a difficult theme : bullying. From the difficulty to adapt to a new place and a new school , to the spread of rumors, this story gives an interesting input on the emotions and difficulties met by a newcomer. I also found it interesting how the book explores what popularity and the fear of rejection can lead people to do.
It's warm up time in this newest installment in the Brinkley Yearbook series. Will Alexandra make the cut and help the historically boys baseball team defend their 9-year championship title?
Punk Rock Karaoke is a fun graphic novel about growing up and making your own life choices . I really enjoyed this graphic novel full of outstanding Bipoc and LGBTQ characters and of course, music !
I’ve just finished reading
Batman: Arkham Asylum - A Serious House on Serious Earth by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean. It’s outstanding in every way, a masterpiece.
'I chiefly concern myself with those who seldom get a hearing, and I don’t feel it is incumbent on me to balance their voices with the well-crafted apologies of the powerful.’ #DeZinVanHetBoek#TheEssenceOfTheBook
