Ok, let’s send them to the Hague I guess? Why do you think this is an important point? Hamas isn’t actually a legitimate organization that signed on to international law and would ever care what “legitimate warfare” is. They just went into Israel and murdered a bunch of civilians. If these fighters are caught whether the UN thinks they were wrong is the least of their problems.

And none of that makes Israel attacking a hospital (or just the blatant collective punishment) justified.

Zaktor ,

Seriously. There’s an easy way to not get your tanks targeted by fighters who can retreat into a hospital: don’t drive your tanks up to a hospital.

Zaktor ,

No it doesn’t, and you’re a shitty person for thinking that.

Zaktor ,

“Whether it’s ok to bomb a hospital” isn’t a legal question.

Zaktor ,

The alternative is “you don’t”, but for some reason you don’t seem to even consider that there might be a cost in civilian lives too high to kill a handful of terrorists.

Zaktor ,

four-hour workweek

Now we’re getting somewhere!

After all, a typical office employee only does 15 minutes of real actual work.

Zaktor ,

Iraq was also a consequence of 9/11. It would never have happened without it.

Zaktor ,

I think Bush would want to do it, but would never have been able to get the go along without the war fever.

Zaktor ,

This whole thing follows on the crowning jewel of intelligence fuckups, so I wouldn’t take any of their claims too seriously.

Traumatized Thai farmer recounts horror of Hamas massacre as families wait for news of loved ones held hostage | CNN (edition.cnn.com)

The Thai government has called for the release of all remaining citizens being held in Gaza. So far at least 33 Thai nationals have been killed, according to figures shared by Thai authorities with CNN – with 18 Thai nationals still being held hostage as of October 26.

Zaktor ,

I did. There’s no fucking way this all stops if Hamas just releases the hostages. This is a completely delusional statement.

Zaktor ,

Ok, yeah, this is the response of a very normal and rational person.

Zaktor ,

Herzog’s statement is pure nonsense, as a full head would be analyzed on its own, he claims it took so long because there were so many mangled bodies, and her head was visible in the video that spawned the focus on her. Unless they found a cache of murdered people in Gaza that somehow hasn’t become a story of its own and then bashed her skull in to get a skull fragment rather than taking DNA samples from her head or body, there’s no way all his claims fit together. Her family’s account makes sense. She was killed with a shot to the head near the festival, leaving behind a skull fragment, then her body (with head minus fragment) was paraded through Gaza.

It might be a valid interview, just with someone who was lying for propaganda purposes.

But when the plane landed, the flight attendant told the couple there wasn’t time to get a wheelchair on board before the plane had to prepare for takeoff again

That’s a problem for the airline to explain to the delayed passengers of the next flight. Maybe if they didn’t cram their flights so close together that there’s no time to resolve problems from the previous flight they wouldn’t have that issue.

And pay your employees when they’re working you greedy fucks.

Zaktor ,

“Companies stop lying after government institutes consequences.”

Zaktor ,

Yup. I wiped my groceries down in the early pandemic. Turned out that probably wasn’t needed, but it’s a minor act that if the virus was in a different form could have helped.

Zaktor ,

Total aid to Israel since its inception is no where near 1 trillion dollars, let alone multiple trillions. We’re currently in the range of $3.8B per year, which is a lot. In the 75 years or so that Israel has existed the US has given something on the order of $160B total.

Zaktor ,

The United States regularly votes for warmongers and theocrats, it doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of Americans who think they’re wrong.

Zaktor ,

if you read the article it’s also a thing decades past, and punishable by law nowadays.

The article says nothing of the sort. 6 states ban the practice, the author assumes it’s been decreasing, and medical organizations have made statements opposing the practices. Nevertheless, after those statements were made, the practice was still ongoing.

Blur+Sharpen isn’t what Nightshade is doing, it’s an example of a passive defense technique that may mess up fine-tuned “invisible” attacks because they rely on making minimal changes to jump category, and that can often come in the form of pretty precise pixel changes. You may have seen past papers about making pandas classify as gibbons. They rely on introducing a noise mask that just makes the image look a little worse quality, but in total is enough to flip the category. They don’t really define their perturbation method in this paper, but there’s some tension between being “invisible” and being resilient to “invisible” corrections like suggested above.

Gazans forced to drink dirty, salty water as the fuel needed to run water systems runs out (edition.cnn.com)

Hamas’ brutal attacks in Israel on October 7 killed at least 1,400 people and the group took more than 200 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. In the wake of the assault, Israel launched an aerial bombardment of Gaza that Palestinian health officials say has killed more than 5,000 people. Israel also announced a...

Why would anyone believe their estimates? They’ve been dropping bombs on civilian houses claiming they’re havens for terrorists and didn’t even see an attack that appears to have been prepared for completely out in the open. Their vaunted intelligence services seem to be more the result of a good branding campaign than actual competence.

What the hell is this shit? Instead of pushing for the return to traditional pensions, capitalism is celebrating the idea that Millennials and Gen Z may simply never be able to stop working. (www.cnbc.com)

Traditionally, retiring entails leaving the workforce permanently. However, experts found that the very definition of retirement is also changing between generations....

Zaktor ,

I feel like my impression of CNBC from a while back was that it just covered stocks and business mergers and stuff like that, but between this, COVID, and the UAW strike it’s really been demonstrating its position as a newspaper for business rather than simply about it.

IDF shows foreign press Hamas bodycam videos, photos of murder, torture, decapitation (www.timesofisrael.com)

The Israeli government on Monday screened for 200 members of the foreign press some 43 minutes of harrowing scenes of murder, torture and decapitation from Hamas’s October 7 onslaught on southern Israel, in which over 1,400 people were killed, including raw videos from the terrorists’ bodycams....

Zaktor ,

If Hamas and Hezbollah are terrorists for murdering Israelis, then so is the whole fucking gov’t of Israel for murdering Palestinian non-combatants with indiscriminate bombing.

And with the big difference that no one is asking the west to support Hamas, they’re already labeled terrorists and heavily restricted, while the government of Israel wants to maintain pleasant status within the world while still doing terrorism.

Exit polls show Swiss anti-immigrant party on track for record election showing (www.politico.eu)

The Swiss People’s Party (SVP), which centered its campaign on anti-immigrant rhetoric, is projected to win 29 percent of the vote, up from 25.6 percent four years ago and higher than pre-election polls. It has been the country’s largest party since 2003.

Zaktor , (edited )

Sounds like a pretty well constructed straw man woven in with some genuinely disturbing nativist stances (e.g., 100% value alignment as a precondition). And all in response to an article where nothing is mentioned about any positions on immigration from any of the other parties, most of which (including the socialists) just maintained their size. But yes, I’m sure “as a lefty” you think “balance is key” on every issue and somehow manage to use the rise of the right to talk about how it’s really progressives’ fault.

Zaktor ,

A lot of voters are ignorant idiots who prefer not to think about politics, but have been convinced that voting is something they should do. I have an acquaintance who was convinced by their progressive politically active partner to vote and, before an emergency intervention corrected this, was thinking about voting for an insane Republican because their name sounded cool.

Pumping up the number of voters in aligned bases is still a good idea for parties, but the deeper you get into those kind of apathetic non-voters, the more they’re going to vote based on nonsense.

Zaktor ,

Religion doesn’t give immigrants a pass. They’re poor, look different, and will take our jerbs. Also, unrelatedly, everything’s too expensive and no one wants to work anymore. The US’s immigrants are overwhelmingly Christian, but the “Christian” party hates their guts.

Zaktor ,

I’m accusing you of being a center-left “smart Democrat” who blames right wing radicalization of the populace based on deep seated and enduring prejudices on “progressives”. I did briefly look at your comment history and just a page in you’re once again making a straw man about progressives while prefacing it with “I’m as liberal as it gets”. And all while capping this response with a “PC culture” complaint that’s more or less saying “woke mind virus”. It’s basically just early Bill Maherism.

And I’ll reiterate again that your blame the left comment for anti-immigrant prejudice is in response to an article where none of the immigration positions of the left parties were even mentioned.

Zaktor ,

No one says any of those things!

You just make up progressive positions to be angry about, mirroring the right wing arguments in the process, while complaining about out of control PC culture like a 90s Third Way Democrat trying to prove they’re not one of those crazy liberals who wants to make crime legal for minorities.

Zaktor ,

I dunno if I’d call that a silver lining. The alternative to religious violence is likely the ongoing issue of women being murdered by men who once loved them in some way. Less of an immediate indicator of a dangerous form of violence and more another body to add to a tragedy so common we consider it just normal day to day life.

Zaktor ,

No worries. I didn’t see this as callousness and was simply providing the perspective that the likely alternative also says a lot of bad things about the dangers to a woman in America but we’re just more used to it. A Jewish woman in America is probably currently in more danger due to being a woman than being Jewish, and that’s not saying she experiences no increased danger from being Jewish.

Zaktor ,

People say police efforts to evacuate citizens from their home before they indiscriminately shoot it up looking for criminals is a crime. Also they have previously just taken houses they evacuate and not allowed their owners return. Silly people, always overreacting based on current and past events.

Biden makes prime-time case for US assistance to Israel and Ukraine, links Putin and Hamas (abcnews.go.com)

Speaking from the Oval Office starting at 8 p.m. ET, Biden made the case to Americans that it’s vital to both global and U.S. national security to assist Israel as it responds to terror attacks by Hamas as well as to continue help for Ukraine as it fends off Russian invaders....

Zaktor ,

Not who you’re responding to, but telling diplomats not to use the phrases “de-escalation/ceasefire”, “end to violence/bloodshed”, and “restoring calm” is a pretty close to a functional endorsement of them.

Zaktor ,

No one supports Hamas. The left support is for the Palestinians. While the asks for Israeli support are for the governments current plans and actions.

Hamas’s attack is a horror committed by a terrorist organization that we have no real influence over or responsibility for, and which is basically over, while the other is an ongoing war crime, with little signs of slowing, being perpetrated by a US ally. To some extent our tax dollars paid for the military that’s killing civilians and our support allows them to keep going despite international condemnation. If Israel chose to or if sufficient international pressure were brought to bear, they could not murder any more people. More innocent people die the more strongly the US supports Israel while condemnations of Hamas do nothing other than confirm evil people are bad.

Zaktor ,

‘Jews’ and ‘Israel’ are not interchangeable terms.

Zaktor ,

$150M added to the strike fund would go a long way to fixing that issue.

Zaktor , (edited )

Title is incorrect. They were thought to have been taken hostage, but were instead among those killed at the festival.

Zaktor ,

And it’s just a link to a Tweet, so the words in the title were chosen by the poster here, not some third party.

Simplest solution for fragmented communities: Redirect comments to one post (by asking or with new functionality)

EDIT: Thank you for all the great responses! I agree that a forced implementation is no longer the way to go. I’ve left the post as is, aside from this comment, in case anyone wanted to reference part of it. At this point, I think implementation 1 (Sincere Request) is the way to go if anything....

This kind of defeats the purpose of having multiple federated communities. Politics on lemmy.world and politics on Beehaw are different communities with different rules and different people who can even see them. Some people are subscribed to individual communities because they like that community, not because they want to join in a free for all with the entire fediverse. They don’t want to go to lemmy.world because the first poster liked lemmy.world traffic or moderation better, they chose the community they subscribed to because they liked it better.

I think the better solution is a front-end collecting comments for a particular link in from all the communities you subscribe to. If you subscribe to three different politics subs and they all post the same link, then all the comments could be displayed at once, either interspersed (with some method of considering traffic when comparing vote totals) or in collapsible sections (effectively like a top level comment for each community).

Zaktor ,

Everyone who’s subscribed to the same communities will see all of each others’ comments. The ones that won’t be seen are those in communities a user intentionally doesn’t subscribe to, which is a good thing.

And putting the choice of where conversation takes place in the hands of the OP isn’t good. There’s already issues with the first poster in a “no duplicate submissions on the same topic” community getting to set the tone for conversation through title and text. This just makes it worse. Downvoting a bad link still means the conversation is being denied in the community of users’ choice and the solution to that is allowing duplicates, which is just the status quo plus extra spam.

Zaktor ,

The not-Israel explanation is still an accident (albeit in the pursuit of humans killing humans somewhere else). At least that version is more “war is horrific” and less “war crimes”.

Zaktor ,

Information has since been reported by more objective parties that shows damage more in line with smaller explosives (so this is probably true), but the US lacks credibility on the conflict because no one sees them as a neutral (or even heavily biased) third party willing to challenge Israel. When Biden says he’s “with Israel 100%” and tells diplomats not to call for restraint, that immediately makes the US government just another arm of the messaging war. There is a cost for stating up front you’re all-in on one side.

Similarly, if Israel had a better track record of not lying about their attacks, people would be more willing to believe them when they say “it wasn’t us”. Going all-in all the time may yield short term gain in whatever current media cycle they’re in, but it destroys their credibility in the long term. And since there have been periodic terrorist attacks followed by brutal military responses for my entire lifetime, they probably should have been thinking in the long term.

Zaktor ,

And then you think the reasonable response is to blow up a hospital?

Zaktor ,

You have other comments where you posted multiple contradictory videos. Just picking one to avoid that obvious discrepancy doesn’t make this effort more believable.

Zaktor ,

What a shitty man. Also a liar. Maybe not on the George Santos level, but closer to George Santos than your average citizen.

Zaktor ,

Centrist “Democrats” in solid blue districts aren’t “the left”, even in the muted sense of the broad American left, they’re the right with just enough sense to file away or discard the rough spots to get elected. Conservatives still exist in these blue areas, just not enough to win outright, and they’re the major component of a centrist “Democrat’s” coalition.

Zaktor ,

From the local news reporting he was very friendly to them previously:

“What we have is a murdered Palestinian child by someone who is radicalized by the environment in which we live right now, that casts Palestinians as human animals,” said Ahmed Rehab, president of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Chicago. “This person had no track record with the family. As a matter of fact, the father says he had built a treehouse for the boy, and allowed him to swim in a makeshift pool and brought him toys.

The nonstop propaganda about Muslims as dangerous subhuman animals can turn a normal friendly relationship into a targeted and cold-blooded murder.

Zaktor ,

There has been more than enough ongoing anti-Muslim propaganda in conservative media to prime people to just need a single horrific act and the terminology escalation that follows to push them over the edge.

We can speculate about mental deterioration or whatever, but that just makes people more susceptible to the propaganda. Without flooding the airwaves about the inhumanity and danger of Muslims there isn’t the trigger to go get those specific people.

Zaktor ,

Rabbis having to work on the sabbath isn’t a new important revelation, it’s just a twist to refresh the story of “a lot of Israelis died” in the back and forth propaganda war.
