The contact patch of the wheels on a train is roughly 90,000 PSI of vertical pressure. You need a lot of ice to derail a train.

People have been using lithium-ion batteries for home and grid storage, which is nuts if you compare it to other battery types

Compared to other battery chemistry types using lithium makes tons of sense.

Lead acid type batteries like sealed and AGM are cheap but not power dense and do not offer the same discharge ability that lithium offers without damaging the battery (AGM fixes this but it’s still an issue). Some lead acid batteries require continuous maintenance and vent toxic gasses which may be an issue depending on your encloser.

Nickel cadmium batteries solve a lot of issues that lead acid batteries are plagued with however they suffer from moisture intrusion issues causing self discharge. Nickel cadmium also suffers from memory effect which may completely ruin pour battery depending on your use. The elephant in the room with nickel cadmium is that it’s banned in some countries including the European union due to how toxic cadmium is.

Now with lithium, it’s a very energy dense battery which means you need less batteries to meet a capacity or you can fit more capacity into an encloser. There isn’t any electrolyte or water maintenance you need to worry about. You can discharge and recharge as you wish with minimal damage. Really the only downsides is that they do not like charging in the cold, are just as toxic as cadmium, and are much much much more expensive.

You999 ,

The original comment was about lithium and their popularity for backup power. Sodium ion batteries are so new that you can’t purchase them yet (blueitte supposedly released the NA300 but I can’t find any in stock and it’s no longer on their site).

It wouldn’t be fair to compare a chemistry you cannot purchase and which it’s strengths and weaknesses haven’t been tested outside of controlled laboratory testing.

You999 ,

I’d say go a step further an look at all their tier IV engines (the ones that are currently in everything from genrators to locomotives to construct equipment). If they aren’t in compliance outside of testing that could open them up to lawsuits from customers and competitors on top of the fines.

Just remember monero is not an investment platform. Use it for it’s utility and not to make money.

Because landing on the moon is an excellent test bed for future scientific and commercial endeavors. But why an international person? Space travel requires support from the international community and an easy way to drum up support without being billed for it is to offer a spot on the mission and all of the prestige that comes with it.

You999 ,

Crypto ain’t cash, they can unravel the block chain and figure out the transactions. He can’t just disappear with a few mil and not be followed.

That’s not true of all crypto though, he could have disappeared with monero.

Proxmox is not a complete replacement for VMware. Proxmox still does not have a distributed resource scheduler or distributed power management for it’s cluster which means the only time a VM will move between nodes is if a node goes down.

There’s no official support for VDI within proxmox and all the third party tools are janky at best, definitely not ready for enterprise level deployments.

Nvidia does not officially support vGPUs on proxmox. You can get it working but it’s definitely not something you’d want to run on production.

You999 ,

That is incorrect, if you read up on the history of “patent drugs” (cure-alls) and the creation of the FDA you’ll understand that there’s an extremely fine line faux “medication” has to follow or risk being pulled from the market. For example you have to list the ingredients and you can’t make claims that your product will cure illness, you can however make vauge claims of health improvements.

The world of quack medicine has vastly improved since the FDA’s creation as most patent drugs of the time were some mix of opium, cocaine, and alcohol being sold as other made up miracle substances.

How does the business half of battery swapping work? Obviously you’d pay for charging the battery but who actually owns the battery? Who is responsible for the battery degradation?

You999 ,

Gas cylinders do not cost ten grand though…

You999 ,

Except any place where it would make sense to place one within a business would be illegal. You are not allowed to place cameras hidden or not in places where one could have an expectation of privacy.

Maybe for those audio engineerings who end up on the mastering side of things but those who go down the live sound systems engineer path definitely deserves the same level of respect as any other engineering profession.

This is great news for people who make animations with deforum as the speed increase should make Rakile’s deforumation GUI much more usable for live composition and framing.

E-fuel? So like what? Electricity…

You999 ,

The problem with fuels made from electricity is that pesky thing called thermodynamics. If an efuel was developed that was more efficient than electricity then we’d be able to use it to produce more electricity than we put in.

You999 ,

People are obsessed with efficiency because it’s the only metric that matters. We have a finite amount of resources on this planet and efficiency is the only way we can make it last. If you aren’t a ‘save the planet’ type of person then efficiency still matters because it’s directly correlated with cost.

You999 ,

You are comparing different efficiencies. Solar panels are 15% to 20% efficient at converting light into energy. As far as I’m aware every Efuel being developed (and every hydrocarbon fuel for that matter) has a 0% efficiency at converting light into energy but if I am mistaken please do correct me.

Why didn't anyone remind me the dual booting exists?

I was talking to my dad yesterday and he talked about how he dual booted windows and Linux in his college days. I immediately left to download Ubuntu, I feel so dumb for forgetting it’s an option. I literally only use windows so I can play Fortnite with friends. PSA: you can have both Linux and Windows, or you can use a vm in...

Proper vGPU would be so much better if nvidia weren’t twats. Anyways if you use proxmox you can unlock vGPU support for most consumers GPUs using this script

You999 ,

Your use case sounds like kubernetes would be a way better fit as dynamicly scaling and load balancing is kinda the whole point of kubernetes.

Proxmox clustering is essentially just for adding redundancy and nothing more.

Not to be that person but ethernet is the specification, the “grappling hook” you are referring to is the connector (Rj45 8p8c). Ethernet has a ton of different connectors in the spec from SFP to DE-9 and even HDMI.

I do not believe it would be unless you had previously signed a contact agreeing to the conditions. If that doesn’t hold water I could see tesla arguing that you are allowed to sell the vehicle however you may not sell the software included in the vehicle as that’s their intellectual property and they only authorized you to use it. And since you can’t separate the software from the vehicle it would accomplish the same thing.

ZFS will do block level deduplication but requires a large table be stored in ram. The issue arises that the cost to increase your ram to keep up with that table size usually ends up being a lot more than just adding more storage.

I do believe most games have an inflated size due to uncompressed assets being included which a file system level compression could help with so long as you have the CPU to spare.

You999 ,

UV-c lights are actually much cheaper than UV black lights as they don’t require the phosphor coating required to block the harmful frequencies. On top of that there was a flood of UV-c bulbs onto the market from the pandemic.

What really should have tipped them off that they are using bulbs is that UV-c bulbs emit a more blue color whereas black lights emit a purple color. Or the wierd smell emitting from the ozone coming off the bulbs.

Amazon's drone delivery program is the joke it always sounded like. (news.yahoo.com)

Only one item can be delivered at a time. It can’t weigh more than 5 pounds. It can’t be too big. It can’t be something breakable, since the drone drops it from 12 feet. The drones can’t fly when it is too hot or too windy or too rainy....

You999 ,

We have flying cars, they are called airplanes or more specifically civil utility aircraft. You know, like the Cessna 172.

Flying vehicles aren’t more mainstream because of the cost. A new plane can cost over half a million dollars while a used plane can easily be over a hundred thousand dollars. And that’s just the cost of the plane.

The other reason is because the rules are more strict and are actually enforced. If a pilot flew their plane like the average person drives their car they would be sitting in jail await trail for attempt murder.

You999 ,

The Webster dictionary defines a car as a vehicle that moves on wheels which airplanes definitely are.

You can have your airplane in your driveway (or more commonly your grage). They are called fly-in communities and are more common than you think.

You999 ,

Switch: mikrotik CRS504-4XQ-IN ($799.99) Cabling: QSFP28 to 4 x 25G SFP28 DAC ($63.00 per cable) NICs: Intel XXV710 25GB ($349.0)

I don’t know how many machines you have so for two machine it’s cost you $1562.97 and maxing out the switch would cost you $6651.83 but do you really have sixteen machines that need or can even physically saturate a 25GB line?

I think it’s more reasonable to get something similar to ubiquiti’s USW-Pro-Aggregation and have three machines capable of the full speed and 28 machines capable of half rate speeds (at a much lower cost per machine)

You999 ,

Both switches mentioned are L3 switches meaning they are a routers too.

You999 ,

Well this is getting into the weeds a bit but TLDR it depends on the L3 switch.

For the mikrotik switch I mentioned, it runs the same RouterOS v7 as their actual routers. Anything you can do on a single purpose router you can do on the switch albeit at a slower speed for applications as the CPU in the switch isn’t as good.

For the ubiquiti switch… I’m not actually sure as ubiquiti’s L3 implementation is not exactly ideal (bordering on broken depending on who you ask)

I wouldn’t even think they broke an HOS rule. There are so many loop holes in HOS that fuck sleep up I wouldn’t even be surprised.

I haven’t tried VMs via hyper v but WSL and sandbox seems to work a bit better. I don’t know if it’s quantifiablely better but it feels like runs better.

You999 ,

When i saw the billboards for their “10G” network I got legitimately excited thinking it was 10Gb/s home internet. 10G was already short hand for 10Gb/s and home internet doesn’t have ‘generations’ unless you are WISP. I can’t tell you how pissed I was seeing their bullshit advertising. Thankfully we are lucky and have four ISPs offering gigabit (and some even offer multi-gig if you move over to a business line) so I don’t have to deal with Comcasts bullshit anymore…

Ford lays off 700 who were building electric version of F-150 | CNN Business (www.cnn.com)

Ford lays off 700 who were building electric version of F-150 | CNN Business::Ford is laying off about 700 workers who build the F-150 Lightning, the electric version of its best-selling pickup truck, and unlike other recent layoffs this one has nothing to do with the ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union.

You999 ,

I agree electric doesn’t currently make sense for semi trucks but it really seems like you are trying to argue that the downsides of a semi truck apply to a pickup truck when they are two completely different vehicles for two very different use cases.

Your whole point about the more weight you add reduces the range of an EV but you also leave out the fact that adding more weight also reduces the fuel economy of ICE vehicles. Most estimates say that for every 100lb of additional weight you can expect around a 2% drop in fuel economy. For an average size tow behind RV (6500lb wet) that’s a 65% drop in fuel economy.

I do not know where you got “hours of down time to charge”. Maybe you were looking at the level two home charging rates? The Ford F150 lighting is capable of charging to 80% (the recommended limit) in 36 minutes for the smaller battery and 41 minutes with the extended range battery using level 3 DC fast charging. I’m no math major but I don’t think that’s hours of downtime

You999 ,

Arguable the case for purchasing a brand new vehicle starts to make more sense as BEV become the majority as the batteries are a consumable that degrades with use and time. So long as the increased price is offset by the longer utilization of that battery.

You999 ,

The problem with replacing individual cells is you’ll end up with cells with different wear levels which means different discharge rates and capacities (max voltage). The battery management system can mitigate some of the problems that arise but can only do that while chargering. While the battery is in use or sits for an extented period of time the cells will try to level out the voltage difference causing loss in capacity and a potential fire risk if the cells are too out of balanced.

Replacing the battery with new better batteries isn’t really an option either as any significant increase in power density would be from a change in battery chemistry and that would also require changing out the on board charging circuit and related systems. There’s also the issue that the majority of charge points providers state in their TOS that the use of any aftermarket parts or modifications to your battery or charger is forbidden so you are essential blacklisted from using any DC fast charger.
