I kinda understand why they do this. Android has slowly been going the route to be only for dummies that shouldn’t be able to touch anything. And most device makers are completely fine with it, evidently.

What’s needed is a really decent alternative OS, or several, with widespread support across devices.

Yea there’s Graphene, but in terms of devices, do you want this year’s Google, last year’s Google, or an overpriced recycled phone? And in terms of firmware the situation is even more difficult.

Even 10 years later I’m still mad at Firefox for letting go of their FF OS.

Any chance to have a separated [PORN] tag to avoid blocking all kind of NSFW posts?

Many NSFW have nothing to do with porn. Sometimes are horror contents, some times are crude images, some times are just lazy people who don’t know of the Spoiler tag. Can we have a quick and easy way to filter off all the (very funny but not alway wanted) Porn posts without locking out those other contents???

I’ll add the important bit, that it’s this icon:

http://icons.iconarchive.com/icons/paomedia/small-n-flat/1024/rss-icon.png

If you see this icon, click it. If you have a program/app that can read the feed, it will open and you’ll see what it does.

Even Lemmy communities have their own RSS feeds, tho it’s limited to last 10 or 50? Idk, posts.

I dunno why he’s wearing the patch, but that’s the German Chancellor, and yesterday he posted that photo with an eyepatch and basically dared the whole internet to make memes of him.

What are some alternatives to bars that stay open late for folks that don't drink alcohol?

Bars are notable for staying open late, but I’m not really familiar with alternatives that might operate similarly. I think many cafés (at least around my area) tend to close a few hours earlier by comparison, which would be my go-to for an alternative otherwise, so what other options are there?

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Book clubs. When I was driving a night taxi, the latest customers on workdays were book club people.

Music clubs too possibly, especially jazz.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Yea I had the same feeling like what you’re describing.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Screw you, now I’ll never be able to hear it any other way.

We found the one person!

How the fuck can I kill 20 hours?

My 13 hour flight just got delayed 7 hours, I’m stuck at my second airport, and I dont think I’m gonna make it. I have some movies and audio books on my phone, but really only anticipated having to burn the flight time via napping and some media, not 7 hours leading up to it, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna mentally burn...

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Last time I was stuck, I downloaded the Lemuroid emulator and went on to explore retro games. Phantasy Star IV was quite rad.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Not only does it not have swipe typing, it doesn’t have suggestions either.

There’s only swipe delete and cursor movement.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn’t have suggestions tho, so swipe is kinda useless if you don’t get the right word.

And the rebooted version has been in alpha development for so long, it’s essentially dead.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Are you sure you have the fork with gesture typing support? They’re both called OpenBoard with no external distinction.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe it doesn’t work for French? Or just the gui option isn’t exposed for French, idk… Try switching Android language to English, see what happens.

how to optimize battery life?

So I recently bought a new honor magic 5 pro. My last phone the Huawei p20 pro was around 5 years old and started to show significantly less battery life. So I want to use this phone again for 5 years. But now I wonder should I keep the battery around 50% (65-35) and charge twice as often or should I 80-20 and charge once every...

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

80-20, but don’t be too strict about it either.

65-35 doesn’t make sense. Yes the battery is at its most stable around 50%, but then you charge it too often and that’s not great either, because it goes through heat cycles rather than charge cycles.

Also batteries degrade by themselves anyway, so it really depends on the quality of the battery itself how long it will last. Inconveniencing yourself too much won’t give it much extra life.

Just never discharge fully, don’t charge fully with exceptions, and charge slowly and you’re good.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Waterproofing isn’t some alchemy. In terms of modern phones it’s just using more glue.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

I’m just gonna pile on that snowflakes are stupid and deserve the same kind of treatment - blocks and bans.

Are you ok with calling men “males”?

People forget that there are also girls, teenagers and possibly other variants you may want to specify (plus all the male ones etc.).

By using female/male you cover those bases.

Besides, have you never seen internet posts like in AITA or such using F/M?

Never mind all the professional language (e.g. “military age male”).

Just, come on. Getting insulted over bullshit.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

TIL all doctors, military, police etc. are incels.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

I still don’t see how one is offensive and one isn’t, when they describe the exact same thing.

It’s as if programmers (noun) were offended when someome says they program (verb) or vice versa.

Yea I see how you may not want to be reduced to just a word describing some quality of yours, but come on, going to war over it is really stupid.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Haha now that you put it like that, you make them seem even worse. Indeed, people who are so sensitive that they can’t stand anything, are also aggravating enough that other people don’t want to be around them.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Female as a noun sounds more formal, distant and depersonalizing than woman. Language is all about nuance.

Well, we’re talking about some random anonymous person on the internet. I think not being personal is quite valid, especially since nowadays you never know how they identify.

In fact, I do find it odd how first people were being offended by others assuming their identity, so some circles just began to use more general and broad terms, and now that’s offensive too.

I tend to refer to singular people on the internet as “person”, and I have been corrected by them or.others, i.e. “I’m a woman!” Like, geez, I don’t care or need to know, to me you’re just a bunch of words, you may be a chatbot for what I know.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

I have a feeling all of your sorts are just reading of a script. Some C-grade armchair psychologist has made some half-assed observation 20 years ago and now the likes of you have nothing else to argue with when someone calls out your insecurities.

Anyway, you’re no fun, bye

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Yea, by being actually good.

(To be clear, I’m joking. Kinda.)

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry I can’t help, I’m just facepalming at all the people who are saying it works with quotation marks and minus signs. Bollocks works.

Anyway, maybe SearX? At least when I try to search for something, it never finds anything rather than try guessing what I meant, so maybe it’s more strict in principle. Of maybe the usefulness depends on instance, I’m not sure how it works.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Ah so it works on one query. Amazing.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t write down every query I use. I remember last week or so I was looking for some obscure director whose both first and last name were shared with popular celebrities. Search engines needed a lot of fucking convincing to get what I needed.

It gets worse if you’re trying to find an exact quote, or a combination of very common words that you know exist in a particular formation. Yea, good luck.

It may work when it’s really simple and when you are looking for something that would end up in top 10 results anyway. Otherwise it gets aggravating.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

This is why I hesitated to reply to you in the first place. Sure, everywhere on the internet people complain how this shit doesn’t work reliably, but it works for you so everyone must be just having nightmares and mistaking them for real life.

You never has a problem? Great for you. It still works like ass, and your and others’ “works for me” is of no help to people who are asking for a solution.

Why are there loads of unnamed bluetooth devices around me? (feddit.de)

I live in a big city in the center. When i activate “Show bluetooth devices without names” in the developer settings of my android 13 phone, there appear loads of this devices. I have no clue what they are. Does anyone know? Are that the bluetooth nanobots of the vaxxinated people? (/s to last question!)

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

When i activate “Show bluetooth devices without names”

I think that option just shows MAC addresses (or whatever it is BT uses) instead of the devices’ names?

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, interesting

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

How are 12yos and 27yos in the same age category

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

If you want to contribute to someone else’s code, you should familiarise yourself with their values or plans before writing code. Can’t expect them to accept any contribution without question.

Otherwise, fork the project and make your own version.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Yea people should stop complaining about this. Cables that come with phones are always crappy anyway, and I prefer chargers that have multiple outputs.

It’s bizarre how reviewers very quickly gave up on complaining that (other) phones don’t have headphone jacks or expandable storage, but keep hanging on the no charger thing.

It’s like complaining the phone doesn’t come with a SIM or electricity. Some stuff you just provide yourself.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Wasn’t the 5 series supposed to be mid range, and the 1 and 3 series be high-end?

Is one grand midrange today? Wtf.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Okay

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Why not just buy a bulletproof charger with multiple ports that will last a decade for all your devices, and good, 2m or longer, braided cables?

Or do you really only have one device and one charger for it, with no backups, nothing for travel?

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

And all of that sucks, except not including a charger.

It’s complaining about the one thing that actually makes sense, and letting everything else slide.

Pack-in chargers and cables always suck. I don’t get how people use them, especially those cheap rubber 1m long cables. Utterly useless.

And chargers with one port? Who shells out 1 grand for a phone and has just one device? You can get an excellent charger with 4 ports and support for all the stupid proprietary protocols for like 30 bucks. Why would I use a pack-in one?

Complain about lack of replaceable batteries, headphone jacks, expandable storage, complain about Google’s monopoly and data harvesting in phones, not that they don’t give you some useless extra crap.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

None ever does or has. Only boutique brands like Razer may give you a braided cable, but nobody ever gives you a cable longer than 1 metre, never mind a charger with more ports.

But let’s say they do. Let’s say they include a selection of 3 good cables, and a charger with 4 ports that supports all the competing protocols, and throw in wireless charger too. Well congrats, now every phone, tablet, watch, camera and speaker is 50 $€£ more expensive, comes in a box twice as large, and we’re back to the problem of having too many useless chargers that stay in boxes.

Btw I use magnetic cables anyway. So whatever they include cable-wise is useless waste for me.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

If I wanted a charger with 4 ports I’d buy it. If I wanted a braided cable I’d buy it.

You really should try it. People don’t know what they’re missing until they use it.

I have the same experience with lots of pack-in products. One that comes to mind are camera (DSLR) neck straps. They’re absolutely dreadful, and shiny advertisements to boot. At some point I tested a bunch of 3rd party ones and found how much better they are. Yet people kept acting like I’m the weird one for paying 20-50 $€£ for something that improves the experience so much.

Same thing here. If for nothing else, not including those crappy accessories just makes people think about the alternatives.

There’s a reason why accessory brands even exist. OEMs actually rarely know how to do accessories well.

let’s say a 0.5 to 1 meter

So FYI standard length is 1 metre, which tends to be a surprise to people when I tell them… 0.5m is super short for anything but a PC connection or powerbank. Again I suggest you try a good, soft, braided 2m cable if you charge using a power brick.

that can also do basic data transfer

What’s “basic”? You know, with most phones you only get a USB2 cable (if it does data transfer at all), again showing how useful they are.

People rarely do data transfer via cable these days, and a really good USB3 cable doesn’t cost 5 cents, so again to me it makes sense to just get one to your liking.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

I just want it shortened to a non-clickbait headline. And then a version shortened to about a 1/4rd length, as that’s usually the ratio of information to fluff in written articles.

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

GTA IV, I don’t even like it that much, yet keep going back to it.
