I fully agree with the prioritization of meeting basic needs before luxury. The detail I would like see happen is making sure that people have a chance to see more than their own area at some point in their lives. See how other people live for a time. I do think there can be better connections for humanity when we can see the lives of others.

I took a trip with some college buddies. We went on a cruise and stopped in Nassau and some of them had some real shock seeing a city with not as much wealth. The just hadn’t considered that clean streets, sidewalks, and traffic lights didn’t exist everywhere.

The local newspapers in my area send each candidate in every race a form of question that they then print. Typically it is very easy to tell which candidates understand what the that form is, there are those that don’t understand, and then there are ones that don’t return it. It’s makes choosing much easier for me. I’ll still pull of websites and check past news articles for each one I am considering.

Support your local newspapers!

Don’t sweat it man. I’ve seen null pointer dereferencing cause drones to fall out of the sky so this is not that bad. One time I did a code change that disabled an e-stop feature that stopped the propellers from spinning. Thankfully no fingers were lost because of that! The code was reviewed and passed the software simulation tests at the time. It just got missed.

The launcher for War Thunder was a p2p client for sharing game files. It worked really well and was essentially it’s own CDN. Not sure if it still is.

Even heavy gamers are getting a much better experience on Linux these days (yay Proton!). There are a couple of anti-cheat systems that are still trouble some, but honestly if the developers don’t want to to put in the much smaller amount of effort to make it work on Linux, I don’t want to give them my money.

Roku TV bricked until agreeing to new terms of service

See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn’t use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don’t agree to their terms, then I don’t get access to their new products. That...

HDHomeRun is one of the common brands. They have a couple that can even demodulate ATSC 3.0.

No clue what you’re talking about. I’ve got an SMA connector on the back of my TV. The did government subsidized conversation boxes. It worked about the same as a VCR. Tune the TV to a specific channel and then use the convertor as the tuner. That by no means caused TVs no to longer than SMA connectors. That was due to TV manufacturers also having their fingers in streaming services. Gotta love that vertical integration!

I updated an internal library from 77 to 90 last week. We’re working quickly these days!

Usually you would go the other way around. Merge changes into git and then distribute from there.

If these CVEs didn’t expose a router that doesn’t get updates, many others already have. OpenWRT might be more secure than OEM firmware.

I found this one a while back for the purpose of having a local copy of what I’ve put in my playlists. github.com/caseychu/spotify-backup

The owner was obviously happy to be rid of the old stock. They knew it wasn’t moving. It is tech waste for a majority of the western world. Yes that stuff is still useful in other places arithe world, but it’s just not particular to have it in a shop in urban Canada. The owner was obviously a good sport to play the games the video and expressed gratitude to be able to sell a bunch of stuff.

You’ve missed some social cues or are looking for any small thing to pounce on. Go touch grass.

It’s a normal thing in Texas. Annual plan are typical. Longer and shorter term ones are available. Never pay month to month. It’s just like Internet plans.

Texas Power Guide does a nice job of analyzing a lot of plans based on your location and usage.

Do NOT use Power To Choose. The electricity retailers purchase positions on that site. There is usually bias in the plans its shows.

TunaLobster ,

Texas Power Guide is another option I’ve used. Power to choose is to be avoided.

Check out FidoNet for another example of federation.

What are some hidden indie gems nobody knows about?

Which indies did you discover and would love more people to know about? I’ll start: The Pale Beyond. Not sure if it’s a hidden gem tbh, but it’s such a good story rich game. I laughed, I cried and felt the characters struggles. If you like story rich games/ choices matter, check it out.

I’ll toss 2 mobile games on the list. Desert Golf and Golf on Mars. No ads. No stupid paid trinket nonsense. Just a couple bucks for the game and a very chill and casual 2D golf game.

Sublinks Aims to Be a Drop-In Replacement for Lemmy (wedistribute.org)

Seems like an interesting effort. A developer is building an alternative Java-based backend to Lemmy’s Rust-based one, with the goal of building in a handful of different features. The dev is looking at using this compatibility to migrate their instance over to the new platform, while allowing the community to use their apps...

TunaLobster ,

Really? I find python imports to work very similar to cpp in practice.

Content and data is shared between instances.

You are commenting on a LemmyNet post from the shit just works instance. I am replying from a LemmyNet account on lemmy.world. It could also happen that someone from a Mastodon instance could reply to this comment. Everyone can have their account on a specific instance (even self-hosting their own instance) and still be able to see content from other websites. There is no singular website that hosts all data and there is no singular authority (ok maybe you could argue the developers of the software, but it’s also open source and other options do exist so it’s not a true single point of authority) for the entire network.

There’s a classical station in Dallas that calls their programming music with context. And they’re right! When there’s a good DJ in the booth you will end up learning something about the music being played.

TunaLobster ,

We can’t see it, but creators and anyone they want to share data with (advertisers) can see it.

Wind and solar have relatively short material lifespans that are expensive or impossible to recycle. It’s all a double edged sword. There is no single solution that will work everywhere on this planet.

TunaLobster ,

Internet archive, and a chunk of r/datahoarders, is built for that purpose. Just as people have saved old paintings (aka media) it’s also good for us to save significant pieces of our current culture. Old VHS tapes and CDs are already disappearing. Sometimes finding something is just a little bit more difficult and it’s only going to get worse.

TunaLobster ,

Lenny does part of this yes. Fediverse is the bigger ticket item. From a single account I can federate to different networks and post questions or have other interactions in different formats.

Running all of the web services at scale takes a chunk of money. Even Matrix has a paid tier to cover the costs of running the servers for the paying customers. The free tier performs as expected for being free and not ad supported. It’s not extra skimming if I end up with fewer annoying things in my face and some neat tricks to use when communicating with my friends.

Giving up those rights for anything your input into a commercial Internet service is fairly standard. All that AI data came from somewhere. Not saying it’s a good thing, just that it’s not atypical.

Data density in UX has been downhill since Microsoft Office added the ribbon in 2007.
