Lmao I just looked at the post on Jerboa and it started a numbered list from 143, it should be counting down.

TWeaK ,

Number 10.

UK is 20, Germany is 23.

I would think things are better in Germany overall, but they just have higher standards.

TWeaK ,

Yeah apparently they’re happy with Mr Security leaving the door open and running a skeleton crew at the border on the 50th anniversary of the last Yom Kippur war.

TWeaK ,

I’d agree with you. I live in the UK, but just recently went to Florida. When I came back I couldn’t get over how much of a shithole the UK was - compared to Florida!!

TWeaK ,

Because they have more money than you. Disposable income is going to be disposed of, one way or another.

TWeaK ,

That has little to nothing to do with the current state of affairs at Boeing. The current situation was brought about by the merger between Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, with the MDD executives joining Boeing’s board of directors and continuing the same shitty behaviour. Eg, with the MD-10 and its cargo door, the issue was raised at design stage, denied until after 2 massive fatal accidents occurred, and then they tried to get around it with “gentleman’s agreements” with the FAA - just like with the MCAS issue on the 737 MAX.

The problems can be pinned down to a very small number of executives, who belong in prison.

TWeaK ,

Context?

Edit: the top reddit comment:

It’s still mind-boggling that the official position from Russia at the time was that they were not involved, and troops were just on vacation. And the wester governments were like hur-dur-dur, I’d like to speak to the manager.

I still don’t get the cubes though.

TWeaK ,

Upon installation, Wi-Fi drivers don’t exist, so you cannot use the internet while installing if you’re on Wi-Fi.

This is a good thing with modern Windows. You don’t want it online while it’s installing, you want to install, lock things down a bit and then connect.

TWeaK ,

Yeah I mean I downgrade new computers to Windows 10 Enterprise and patch authenticate with MAS. I tried using Windows 11, but the taskbar pissed me off too much - I want separate tabs starting from the left, not combined, and everything always showing in the notification area. I was going to put up with the tab thing but having to manually set every single notification icon to not hide itself away was just a dealbreaker. I want to know what’s running, so I know to kill it.

TWeaK ,

Where possible I always use local accounts on Windows, none of this signed in to MS bullshit.

TWeaK ,

Yeah the only real downside is finding parts for them, but they’re proper engineer’s cars.

TWeaK ,

The only problem with them braking is trying to find parts, because they’ve stopped producing them. In terms of having to work on them they’re still generally well designed.

The NYPD is using social media to target critics. That brings its own set of worries (apnews.com)

Produced in-house by the New York Police Department and promoted across its official social media channels, the dramatic two-minute clip reflects a concerted effort by the nation’s largest police force to engage the public and influence policy through a more aggressive online presence....

TWeaK ,

Surely this is a state actor’s assault against the first amendment? The police are quelling the voice of the people.

TWeaK ,

Don’t forget: Indian tech entrepreneur Rajat Khare is scrubbing the internet of any mention of his name or even anything critical about him, like how he runs a hack for hire business that works for the worst of them, eg Qatar spying on FIFA when they were bidding for the World Cup.

Behind the Bastards tried to do a two part episode on it, but it’s pretty hard to find now.

TWeaK ,

I swear I had them downloaded, then my app deleted them. Either that or they just never downloaded.

Gonna have another hunt, I want me an mp3.

TWeaK ,

Even worse still: many online banking services require you to connect to Google, basically through the back end captcha system. You never have to solve the puzzle or click on traffic lights, but they do still associate you and your web browser with having an account with that bank.

However also, you can often use root with banking apps, you just have to set it up right. Configure Magisk to operate in the Zygisk domain with a deny list, and add the apps to that.

TWeaK ,

GrapheneOS is made by diva developers who frankly should not be trusted. “We only allow Google phones to run our OS!” as if they don’t have a backroom deal with Google.

TWeaK ,

Pure wild speculation if I’m honest, however I’d be more surprised if I was completely wrong. It’s always seemed sketchy the way Google have basically said “Use our phone, it’s more secure!” with their Nexus and Pixel phones - this was long after the time Google stopped not being evil. At best, the security problems have simply changed manufacturer. Also, Google have a history of undermining development of circumvention, eg hiring the developer of MicroG and forcing him to stop development as a term in his contract.

The diva part is widely known, GrapheneOS developers don’t play nice with the rest of the custom development community. So, while I can’t substantiate any actual deal between them and Google, it’s the perfect recipe.

TWeaK ,

Privacy Guides has a bit of a sordid history of their own diva behaviour.

TWeaK ,

Nah they’ve been accused of biases.

TWeaK ,

Windows Subsystem for Android hasn’t been as nearly as popular as Windows Subsystem for Linux itself and its scope was limited given the focus on the Amazon Appstore for obtaining Android apps.

Sounds like no one was using it.

TWeaK ,

Also, don’t google offer some functionality for testing Android apps in Windows?

What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?

So I’ve realized that in conversations I’ll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I’ve been thinking that it’s not as inclusive to women/trans people....

I used to have a maths teacher who called almost every number “guy”.

“And this guy goes to zero, while this guy goes to infinity!”

TWeaK ,

In the US the cops have a long history of killing striking workers.

TWeaK ,

That workers in the US have a lot more reason to be wary about striking. Hell, just look at the way protestors are being treated in Georgia over Cop City.

They should still do it, but also it’s more risky than in Europe.

TWeaK ,

Less than 100 years ago. I only tried one search though and found a story about a guy who killed a cop and a utility worker, then gave up.

Edit: Blair mountain was 1921, so that was just over 100 years ago, but I expect there have been others since.

TWeaK ,

The people striking aren’t the unemployed rednecks posing with shotguns in their trucks.

TWeaK ,

Also:

Dr Mohamed Salha, interim hospital manager at al-Awda hospital, where many of the dead and injured were taken, told the BBC: “Al-Awda hospital received around 176 injured people…142 of these cases are bullet injuries and the rest are from the stampede and broken limbs in the upper and lower body parts.”

It isn’t really a solution, it just encases them in calcium. The plastic is still in there.

When the plastic-containing water was boiled, these calcium carbonates formed tiny clumps around most of the microscopic plastics, trapping them within and rendering them harmless.

The effectiveness may also depend on the type of water and its mineral content.

TWeaK ,

Depends on the phone, with most it isn’t easy to remove the battery.

TWeaK ,

I think there is a way to customise the battery charging level such that it considers 100% to be a lower charge, eg 70-80%. This should mitigate that issue somewhat, as that range of charge is what you’re supposed to store the battery at long term.

My guess is this would be done with a custom kernal for the phone. You would need a phone where you can unlock the bootloader.

TWeaK ,

Absolutely, there’s no good reason not to. GoPro’s manage to be waterproof and yet still have removeable batteries.

Phone manufacturers are bastards though, and they know that more people will just replace their phone when the battery wears out rather than go through the hassle of replacing the battery, a hassle that is by design.

TWeaK ,

Dead link.

Ah wait, no you have to be logged in to see it. However, the link is horrifically gorey, and breaks the NSFW rule.

TWeaK ,
TWeaK ,

The fact that thousands weren’t killed and that it was merely hundreds IS NOT BETTER.

Gotta conserve ammo until the latest US shipment comes in.

TWeaK ,

That one and Bezos I, II and IV are gold. I hate the people, but dammit if Bo didn’t give them bangin theme songs.

TWeaK ,

Brexit means Biscuit!!!

And I just reminded myself that school kids across the UK have started dirty takling each other, with no intention of getting the ball, while shouting “Brexit means Brexit!!”

TWeaK ,

I wasn’t criticising the study for that so much, aside from the suggestion that their findings have broader implications than they likely do. The article perhaps deserves a little criticism, but yes the media (which the article publisher is a part of), and particularly mass media is the bigger culprit.

TWeaK ,

Why did you have to say that?! RIP Robin Williams :(

TWeaK ,

Yeah man, loads of good people died in 2016, it was a whole thing.
