Well, for as much as you use the chemical formula for water in your everyday human interactions, anyway

SkyeStarfall ,

Please don’t use the t word, it’s generally considered a slur.

SkyeStarfall ,

You can’t change your crops that quickly.

Also, rice is probably still plenty expensive enough.

SkyeStarfall ,

We really ought to be strengthening our supply networks. And it’s really frustrating that we’re not.

We already saw a glimpse of what can happen under covid lockdown. And that was a controlled shutdown. What happens if the supply chain breaks unexpectedly?

SkyeStarfall , (edited )

And just like solar panels, trees harvest a part of the energy in sunlight, giving additional cooling to just a shade. And trees are cheaper to set up, even if they may not provide a return on electricity.

Ideally you would have trees on the ground and solar panels on the roofs, to further increase cooling.

With just an IP? Then the system is broken. Because an IP is often easy to get, and everything that directly connects to you needs your IP, unless you use a VPN I guess.

Every website knows your IP. Every internet application knows your IP. Everyone in a peer-to-to-peer network knows your IP. It’s not a secret, it’s just your internet address. It is designed to be known.

SkyeStarfall ,

Do you think it’s going to be significantly less than in other places? What would be the reason for that?

SkyeStarfall ,

This is a weird mentality and not my experience at all. Many women love and are deep into games. You just need to be a nice person and keep meeting people… and like, actually meet new people, many struggle with that part.

It may be less but certainly not a “rare minority”.

WARNING: Lemmy Self-Hosters, There Have Been CSAM Attacks taking place against [email protected]

There have been users spamming CSAM content in !lemmyshitpost causing it to federate to other instances. If your instance is subscribed to this community, you should take action to rectify it immediately. I recommend performing a hard delete via command line on the server....

You always gotta prepare for the worst case. It’s certainly why I am never going to bother with hosting something like this unless I’m serious about it akin to a job. If there’s even a remote chance of CASM getting on your machine, you gotta assume it will and be prepared to fight to prevent it/remove it.

How do people find good information on the internet these days?

It used to be that you would do a search on a relevant subject and get blog posts, forums posts, and maybe a couple of relevant companies offering the product or service. (And if you wanted more information on said company you could give them a call and actually talk to a real person about said service) You could even trust...

SkyeStarfall ,

Eh, I found it quite useful in giving me relatively well known information. As for code, it’s great at telling me what functions and such do without having to traverse the documentation for a library and such, and also explaining stuff I am confused about. It is faster and more convenient for a lot of stuff, as long as you double check important info (but you have to do that anyway, never use a single source etc etc).

SkyeStarfall ,

Not to mention having to stand for the flag and sing the anthem every day.

…it is every day, right? Because honestly to me as an European it seems sufficiently absurd (and kinda gross) that I just have to ask to make sure lmao

SkyeStarfall ,

Or when the generator simply isn’t powerful enough to supply everything. Because resources are finite and you don’t always have enough power for everything.

SkyeStarfall ,

They’d see videos of doing and sharing pleasure instead of all the horrific shit like war or sweatshops and what not. For sure it ought to give a higher opinion.

SkyeStarfall ,

I don’t know about that, email is still great at what it does. It’s less that it died and more that people moved on to more real-time communication that fit their needs better, with email still being used for what it is actually good for.

SkyeStarfall ,

I don’t see how it’s worse than other kinds of advertisment. We are spammed by ads everywhere. What difference does it make whether it’s an OnlyFans or a car you will never buy?

SkyeStarfall ,

Your phone only contains your own dirt.

It’s like saying you’re okay with sleeping in someone else’s unwashed bed just because you’re okay with doing that with your own.

SkyeStarfall ,

Capitalism literally encourages this greed. It systematizes greed, instead of even attempting to fight it.

SkyeStarfall ,

Economic systems and political systems are heavily linked. Who holds the power? And is there a meaningful difference between political power and power through wealth? Or are they 2 sides of the same coin?

If, say, a tiny 1% controls all the wealth in the world, what does that mean for politics? Does democracy hold any power if the 1% can just use their wealth to get their way anyway? What can the 99% do if they have no wealth, and are dependent on the 1% for housing, food, etc? With the police and military legally and violently enforcing that the wealth of the 1% is protected and not just taken by the rest?

While it isn’t as drastic as the 99% controlling no wealth, this really isn’t far off from reality at all. If the vast majority is dependent on a small powerful minority to survive and have any meaningful quality of life, is there really a meaningful difference to an oligarchy?

SkyeStarfall ,

I swear looking at the job fast food workers do it always seems miserable and hard as hell. And every time I think “I could never do this and this should pay more than I am”.

SkyeStarfall ,

That X was never in the upper right corner

SkyeStarfall ,

It kinda already does though.

Just put stuff like “I’m vaccinated” or “abortion is a human right” or “we shouldn’t kill queer people maybe”, and that weeds out at least 60% of the bad actors.

Basically don’t make your bio as widely appealing as possible. Make it as unappealing as possible to the people you don’t want in your life. A filter, not an advertisment.

SkyeStarfall ,

That’s just for comedic effect. Obviously I don’t think “maybe” especially considering I am included here lmao.

SkyeStarfall ,

Can you specify which games? I’ve modded plenty and it all still works as expected honestly

SkyeStarfall ,

I swear I now can’t tell whether people mean twitter or an arbitrary variable when they say X now…

SkyeStarfall ,

But the thing is, mod launchers have been working fine for me through wine. Though most games these days have integrated steam workshop support anyway.

SkyeStarfall ,

Yes.

Good luck doing that though.

SkyeStarfall ,

You know what is implied in the ability to land a shoe on the moon, right?

SkyeStarfall ,

I doubt they are platform specific. I have not found any bugs playing on linux that windows didn’t also have.

SkyeStarfall ,

There’s so much more to friendship than just partying

SkyeStarfall ,

Climate movements are. Others are just calling them alarmist.

SkyeStarfall ,

People are giving away that much of their life for much less money all the time. That’s literally what working is.

SkyeStarfall ,

Eh, it’s a full priced AAA game. I think it’s fair to have some expectations from it.

SkyeStarfall ,

There are a lot of drugs that we use without really knowing why they work. It’s actually not that uncommon. The human body is complex.

SkyeStarfall ,

Eeeh, the thing with curiosity is that it’s a double edged sword in that regard. Sure, maybe it makes you more likely to engage… but it also makes you much more likely to investigate. Ask the question “why?”, rather than take things at face value.

SkyeStarfall ,

Eeeh, I don’t know about that. He may have experience, but it never seemed to me like he had much understanding. Or even knew how to learn, like with the Linux stuff.

SkyeStarfall ,

Ideas very much are disseminated through memes and jokes. That’s one of the main social purposes.of comedy.

Why is including feminists funny to people in a meme? What is the implication?

SkyeStarfall , (edited )

They have an implication whether it is intended or not.

SkyeStarfall ,

A white dwarf is a remnant of a dead star. It cannot go supernova by itself.

SkyeStarfall ,

They all in the same death cult or something?

Yeah, capitalism it seems like.

I guess asking for sustainable business practices is too much to ask for from the system. “Sufficient” money is never good enough. Gotta try to get all the money, even if it means burning down everything one holds dear.

Hell, the system is literally willing to burn down the whole world in pursuit of more. The more you think about it, the more senseless it all becomes.

SkyeStarfall ,

Then it sounds like growing as much as they did was a mistake.

SkyeStarfall ,

If that was what would be necessary, then yes, scaling down would be the correct choice, because in that case scaling up was a mistake.

Infinite growth is unsustainable, and it always falls apart in the end. Why can’t we just be happy with some slow and sustainable growth, until a sustainable plateau?

SkyeStarfall ,

Yes and that’s what makes them so good

SkyeStarfall ,

It didn’t use to be.

People give a negative review because they consider the game to be much worse than it was in the past.

SkyeStarfall ,

Uh I mean, statistical machine learning models are used in tons of places and have been for a while now. There’s plenty of positive effects to be had. It’s just called “AI” without further clarification.

I’m sure what they are doing here is developing one such machine learning model to improve their detection.

And to me it seems like wildfire detection is a good contender to be improved by machine learning.

SkyeStarfall ,

But you cannot escape the tyranny of the second law of thermodynamics. It will always be more efficient to not release the carbon in the first place.

SkyeStarfall ,

I would argue it’s not even good even if you are winning.

Even if you strike gold and get rich, what use is all of it if you’re alone?

SkyeStarfall ,

Do you think those games wouldn’t have been made without capitalism?

All of those examples are driven by people wanting to make a good game because that is their passion.

If they were given infinite resources to make a game, and would gain nothing else beyond just a decent standard of living or whatever, do you think they wouldn’t made them? Because I think they would.

SkyeStarfall ,

My point was that capitalism and its incentives do not create good games.

Capitalism rewards profit at any cost, and nothing more. In the end this allows for cash grabs and terrible working conditions, which the industry is riddled with. Good games would still have gotten made without these incentives.

There’s many assumptions in this text, and it ignores great games that were financial flops (or couldn’t get made in the first place), and terrible ones (like gacha games or basically the whole mobile games ecosystem) which are greatly rewarded and successful. There are so many resources wasted on objectively not good things for players such as how to exploit their psyche to spend money which compromises the game design, or resources spent on stuff like marketing just because that’s what pays back, instead of spending those on making a better game.

I would argue that capitalism’s incentives hampers the creation of good games if anything. Because now instead of thinking what makes a game good, devs are instead forced or incentivized to think what makes money. And they are very much not the same thing.
