While this is true, several core elements of pop os 22.04 continue to receive updates. The kernel, pipewire, Firefox, etc. all continue to receive updates to modernish versions. It is not an ignored distro by any means

Sentau ,

No they but they still need to test the kernel and pipewire with the packages they ship to ensure that there are no bugs or dependency issues.

No/few distro maintainers develop packages. By your logic, maintaining a distro should be trivial.

Sentau ,

So I am not a software developer. My point was born out of the fact that people talk about maintainers(package and otherwise) getting burnt out.

Are there any CPUs that work well with Linux that aren't made by Intel or another company on the BDS list/that supports Israel?

I have a Ryzen 3 1300X at the moment and it’s always had this soft lock freezing bug on Linux. I used to dual-boot Windows on this machine and Windows never had the same problem, so I think it is an issue with the Linux kernel (I’ve also replaced nearly every bit of hardware that I originally built the PC with, except for...

Sentau ,

I have a 5600h system(laptop) and I have not run into the issue you mention. In fact in the past six months after the fTPM bullshit was fixed, I haven’t run into any issues.

Sentau ,

In zen 2 and above firmware TPM was being used for a random number generator. This led to stutters during RN generation. Eventually this was fixed in 6.3.x series(or 6.4.x I can’t remember) and then the fix was backported to all lts kernels

Sentau ,

My experience has been positive so far on a laptop with RDNA1 graphics(5500m). There is no true graphics switching. The iGPU is responsible for drawing things on the screen. What it does is offload heavy rendering tasks to the dGPU and then draws the rendered output provided to it by the dGPU. This leads to a small performance penalty but gives graphics switching on laptops without dedicated hardware to enable it.

So all in all, hybrid graphics works well in laptops with an AMD dGPU. I would argue the experience is better than the one in windows.

Weird ass line in the middle of my screen sometimes (Fedora Linux)

Finally back on a gnome distro that supports GRUB2, and loving it so far. The exception being that every time something moves, there is a weird line in the middle of my monitor that almost “splits” the screen in half, like it’s off by a pixel or something. this isn’t really present in static images though. it’s pretty...

Sentau ,

This fix is applicable only if OP is using x11 and not Wayland.

Sentau ,

Wine doesn’t allow donations from my country. Is there anyway to get around this restriction¿?

Sentau ,

Unfortunately that is way too expensive for me at this moment. Maybe I will buy it when I am a little better off money wise

Sentau ,

In the article, it says they haven’t tracked him down yet.

Sentau ,

Wow. I was not expecting this especially considering that feature freeze was in place for gnome 46.

Bluetooth issues on Bazzite OS (lemmy.world)

Hi, I’ve been having issues with my network adapter on Bazzite OS. Both WIFI and Bluetooth do not work, and the the utility nmcli device confirms this. I used lspci to find my network controller, which is a `MEDIATEK Corp. MT7922 802.11ax PCI Express Wireless Network Adapter. I’m unsure how to proceed further. Thanks.

Sentau , (edited )

This is not a fix though. This is some sleep related issue that even I faced in my laptop for the mt7922 wifi card. Ensure that fast boot is disabled in the bios. Also all the kernels since 6.2(I think¿?) have patched this issue so you should not be facing this issue now. I no longer face it.

Edit : though in my case, it was only WiFi which was not working because the mt7922 kernel module was failing to load at startup. If this issue occurs again, post the output of journalctl so we can see what the exact issue is.

So I see people on the phoronix forums complaining that this is a bad thing because they have TVs which are HDMI only. From what I read, the HDMI 2.1+ spec is only needed to support extreme cases like 4k@120Hz and above. So my question is how many people are there who have a TV old enough to have no display ports but be of that outrageous specification.

Edit : it seems I am mistaken in thinking that new TVs have display port.

Sentau ,

I have good new my friend. The vrr patch was just merged into 46 beta as an experimental feature.

Sentau ,

Flathub does provide thiswarning like system.

I don’t think we can filter using these though

Sentau , (edited )

You don’t have to worry. The folks at fedora have decided that the X11 session will remain in fedora 40 so you will be able to use X11 if you still face issues in wayland.

Edit : I was not clear enough. Want I mean to say is that the kwin-x11 and other required packages will be part of the fedora repo and people can just download them to enable the plasma-X11 session

Sentau ,

At today’s FESCo meeting, we agreed on the following proposal:

>AGREED: KDE packages which reintroduce support for X11 are
allowed in the main Fedora repositories, however they may not be
included by default on any release-blocking deliverable (ISO, image,
etc.). The KDE SIG should provide a notice before major changes, but
is not responsible for ensuring that these packages adapt. Upgrades
from F38 and F39 will be automatically migrated to Wayland. (+5, 0,
-1)

For additional clarification: this means that all users performing upgrades MUST be migrated to the Wayland session. They then MAY opt-in to the X11 session by installing a package for that purpose. We are explicitly not providing detailed technical implementation requirements here, but we expect all parties to follow the spirit of this decision when making technical decisions.

Sentau ,

The bottles flatpak is the official release so people not on an arch based system can/should use that

Sentau ,

No way pop os will ship with snaps. System76 devs have already said they prefer flatpak

Sentau ,

Considering all the competitors are windows based, they already have access to steam. And the open source holo iso(steam OS) is available if they want to use it.

Sentau ,

Holo iso is completely open source. The reason for the compatibility issues is that it is forked from software meant for a very specific device so there will always be issues on other devices if it is used as is

Sentau ,

Fedora silverblue or rather the ublue image.

I am not a power user and do casual gaming, document reading and processing, mail checking and video watching so the ublue main image provides the simplicity and stability I need.

Sentau ,

The flatpak steam issue you pointed to has been long since resolved. I use universal blue’s rebase of silverblue and the flatpak install of steam has been working fine. Also since proton is packaged with steam, it does matter which distro you are one. It works when steam does.

Sentau ,

The flatpak version of steam works on fedora. That is an old issue.

Sentau ,

Also if OP is hell bent on testing DEs on hardware, I recommend installing fedora silverblue and rebasing betweens the spins to try out KDE, Gnome, budgie, sway(and a few more provided the universal blue developers). This way you can can safely try out the DEs without the mess of leftover packages and without losing your data.

Also @Doctor_Rex remember to install the nvidia specific images from ublue. They will come the nvidia drivers preinstalled.

But the result of those gestures(the overview) is not as useful as the overview in gnome and you have to swipe up to go to the overview and swipe up(not down for some unfanthomnable reason) again to leave the overview. A new gesture system has been added to plasma 6 which looks promising. The dev who made it said he has taken a lot of inspiration from gnome.

Occasional diagonal screen tearing? (kbin.run)

Running latest Pop!_OS on a Dell G5 5590 (i7 9th gen, 16Gb RAM, 1660ti mobile). Occasionally, I'll get a tear in the screen going from bot. left to up. right corner. I'm on latest driver as far as I can tell (Pop!_Shop shows both 470.199.02 and 545.29.06 as installed) any ideas? Tearing only happens on second monitor, not built...

Sentau ,

If you have not fiddled with any display settings from the command line, it is safe to say that you are X11.

Sentau ,

Dont. Pop OS uses a older version of gnome which has a lot bugs under wayland. It is why the default is X11 and why the option to enable wayland is ‘hidden’ behind the command line.

Instead see if the issue is resolved by turning on ForceFullCompositionPipeline in the nvidia settings

Edit : The option might also be labelled ForceCompositionPipeline

Sometimes war veterans who have been in combat suffer from PTSD and react to loud gun like noises as if they are shots being fired. That is not the case here as it seems he did not take part in any combat while deployed but it certainly can be trauma.

Pop! OS hasn’t been updated in a couple years now, making it an absolute relic. As far as I know none of the Pop! OS apps have been either.

I think you are a bit misinformed on the situation. The core gnome-apps are struck on version 42.5 (which is ancient) but apps like Firefox, libre office, steam, etc. have been getting updates to keep them up to date. They might miss a sub version here or there but these are more or less upto date. The kernel and mesa graphic stack are also relatively up to date (not as modern as arch, fedora or opensuse tw but close enough) while the nvidia drivers are just as modern as on other distros(its their USP after all). Native packages of other 3rd party apps might old but you always have flatpak for those.

What I am trying to say is that pop os is still recommendable. I was using it until a few months ago when I changed devices leading to some distro hopping after which I have settled on universal blue’s rebase of fedora silverblue. It is completely possible that if I had not switched from nvidia to amd, I would still be on pop os.

Sentau ,

Yeah but it only works if the source is moving towards the observer

Sentau ,

As for discover wanting to restart to do their update, that’s a fedora thing for an extra level of safety while updating

That shouldn’t trigger for flatpaks though. No risk of breaking the system while updating flatpaks

Sentau , (edited )

I suggest rebasing to ublue. universal-blue.org/images/

Packages from rpmfusion (codecs, mesa-freeworld) are all added to the base layer of silverblue so shit works ootb

Sentau ,

Which core Unix principles though¿?

Sentau ,

Instead, a few elite scientists (likely from a well connected family) will be conducting research

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how research at CERN works. Tens of thousands of physicists from all over the world work either on the information gathered by CERN or to design experiments to get further data from the colliders under CERN’s purview. Many of the people contributing to the research are students from different stages of academia. They are not rich or connected people but just smart people motivated to contribute and better our understanding of the universe

Sentau ,

Was this app removed from flathub¿? I wanted to try this after reading about it but can’t find it on flathub. The flathub link given on the project gitlab page also leads to 404 page not found error

Sentau ,

You have got to be the biggest promoter of immutable distros on lemmy.

Good job though. While there are some pain points with immutable distros, i feel they are great for the casual users who will just browse the web, play some games and maybe do some document reading and editing.

Sentau ,

I am confused a little. The space taken by silver blue increased by around 3 gigs but the space taken by workstation increased by 4 gigs. So flatpak actually resulted in less space being used the apps. Is this some sort of faulty space usage reporting¿?

Sentau , (edited )

Are runtimes from the fedora flatpaks remote used by apps that are downloaded from flathub¿? Because the gnome apps that are installed by default in silver blue are from fedora flatpak remote so I am guessing the runtimes are also from the same remote

Sentau ,

It is the nuclear power vs fossil fuels vs renewables debate all over again. Nuclear is much greener than fossil fuels but comes with its own challenges regarding cost, safety and waste disposal. Renewable energy like solar, wind and hydro are better than nuclear but the point is that nuclear and renewables are not enemies rather they are allies who have to band together to beat fossil fuels.

Public transport is like renewables, the best solution but one which needs time because years of underdevelopment and under-funding means that they are not as developed as they should be.

EVs are like nuclear. Not the perfect solution but have the capability to serve areas and use cases that public transport (renewables) can’t. There are issues like them costing more than the alternatives and that the disposal of waste produced by both is a problem with an unsatisfactory solution.

ICE vehicles are like fossil fuel energy plants. The worst of the worst with regards to their effect on the planet. Their only advantage is that they offer convenience.

So I think we should stop the narrative that EVs(nuclear) are bad because the are not the best solution at hand but rather combine increasing adoption of both EV(nuclear) and public transport (renewables) to combat the true threat that is ICE(fossil fuel energy plants).

Sentau ,

There is enough money to fund both EVs and public transit. No need to cut money from one to give to the other. We should take this money from the funding for military or religious purposes.

Sentau , (edited )

Could be an NVIDIA issue where the fact the external display is connected to the dGPU is causing issues. Nouveau optimus support(rather lack of it) for quattro could also be leading to the issue.

Sentau ,

Yeah but to achieve this paper gains I would wager a lot of people have been screwed out of their real money

Sentau ,

If you dont mind me asking what is the difference between sexual attraction and being horny?

Sentau ,

So does arousal have no trigger in your case¿? Is morning wood an example of such arousal where it is not directed¿?

Thanks for indulging my curiosity.
