An isolated friend of mine in Montreux, Switzerland, who is already in an incredibly rough situation, just had their Samsung phone break to pieces. It's their computer / writing tool / appointment scheduling tool / connection to the outside world. This is a major crisis, more than I can convey.

  1. Are there charities in Switzerland or Europe that help people with replacement phones?

  2. Are there charities that help recover data off old phones?

The library will help with providing a link to those who can help, rather than direct help. That's what libraries do (among other things).

I would suggest that your friend contact the largest local library, as they are most likely to have specialist help staff with the knowledge your friend needs.

Good morning booklovers,

if you, like me, have bookshelves stuffed with around your house, then Eva Wiseman has got news for you... they signify more about your life & the society we live in than you thought.

'bookshelf wealth' (a new design trend), is not the innocent amassing of things to read, we may have thought...

@ChrisMayLA6 The only real bonus I've found to having books (beyond not having to leave home to read them) is that they are a good way to insulate a house that is 1/3 sash windows and 2/3 single brick walls.

For this of us accused of buying too many - Umberto Eco was on our side:

'It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones'

Books (if you have enough) also provide a bit of insulation. Also, if you are lucky, they - on very rare occasions - increase in value.
