First OS, WinXP.

Later when win7 was discontinued, I kept windows 10 on my desktop and Ubuntu on my laptop. It wasnt until Valve started working on proton and most of the games I play became playable on Linux that I ditched windows entirely.

I distrohopped around for a while, but always found myself landing back on Ubuntu, so it’s what I’ve stuck with to this day, although if anyone else asks me what distro they should get, I will usually recommend mint.

Redderthanmisty ,

Oh, but they did.

It just doesn’t resemble the bourgeois ‘democracy’ we have in the west, but rather something else entirely that better fits the 'for the people, by the people, of the people" definition of democracy.

I’m willing to bet some techbro either already has, or will in the near future propose an Ai toilet that will do something exactly this.

You can get Google play working by sideloading it with adb, and enabling graphene’s microG service in the apps menu.

Any further apps installed with Google play, and Google itself, will still be under the default restrictions imposed by graphene, instead of having full access like with stock android.

It can be a little clunky starting out, but once you get used to it, the only major downside I could find was that I couldn’t verify my bank details to enable nfc payments, because Google hasn’t whitelisted Graphene in their API for “security reasons”

I’ve been loving Andy Weir’s space trilogy (The Martian, Artemis, Project Hail Mary). I haven’t been able to put his books down, and another one of his stories is currently in production for a film.

Redderthanmisty ,

1000/1000, £25/mo. Plus an extra £5 which included some mesh AP’s and a static IP not behind a CGNAT.

Meanwhile, in the UK, our towns are completely flooded every couple of months

Redderthanmisty ,

The spoon is too small, at least by lemmygrad’s standards.

Redderthanmisty ,

I have been using Linux since the windows 8 days, and still see no reason to return.

Redderthanmisty ,

I thought the hardware term was called a “paper launch”

Redderthanmisty ,

Yeah, there’s still plenty of issues I have with my framework laptop, but I’m ultimately happier with it than I would’ve been will Dell, Lenovo, Asus, etc.

Redderthanmisty ,

IWW has entered the chat

I pay around £15 per month in membership fees at my Union. But if it weren’t for them, I’d have lost my house when the energy companies hiked their prices, end everyone else did the same to compensate.

Was it garaunteed that they’d win these negotiations? No.

Would I have been better off begging to my managers? Fuck no.

Not the collective ownership of everything, just the collective ownership (and eventual abolition) of private property, which differs from personal property in that they are assets which are used for the purpose of capital accumulation (e.g factories, real estate, farms, supermarkets, etc.)

If you bought CSGO, you automatically got access to prime mode when the game went free to play.

It’s a separate matchmaking pool that puts you in servers filled with only other people who also bought the game, substantially reducing the likelihood of encountering cheaters and bots who just make endless free accounts.

This also carries over into CS2 as far as I’m aware.

Redderthanmisty ,

YouTube is already far ahead on that front.

I remember when any ad over 15 seconds was skippable after 5. Now, if I turn adblock off, I may receive dual minute-long unskippable ads, even less than 5 minutes apart on an hour long video.

It’s actually more egregious than cable TV

Redderthanmisty ,

I have a pi zero running as a doorbell camera, alongside a couple more CCTV cameras, and a pi4 running in kiosk mode connected to my motioneye server displaying said camera streams on a crappy old TV in my home office.

Redderthanmisty ,

It’s actually cheaper than getting an Amazon Ring too, provided you already have mains access from an existing doorbell, and a 3d printer on hand.

Redderthanmisty ,

Nowadays, Its actually harder to find a game that flat out won’t work. Thanks to Proton, the only games that you can’t play on linux are ones that the developer has specifically forbidden from working on linux via whatever AC they use.

Redderthanmisty ,

Not spiralling downwards over here… plummeting.

Hell, we didn’t even get to vote for our last two leaders, both of whom did more damage individually than Thatcher.

As for the alternative when we do get a chance to vote, well they’ve abandoned just about every principle and policy they had now that victory is practically garaunteed, so they’ve effectively become diet tories.

Redderthanmisty ,

Did you receive an election ballot for either Sunak or Truss? 'Cause I didn’t.

The comment at the time I replied said “how are things over there”, without the “in canada” bit.

I assumed that because he mentioned that he became a canadian citizen, that he was currently living in canada, and because the post is about a UK policy, that wanted to know more of what it was like in the UK currently in case he ever wanted to come back.

And while I am aware that we live in a parliamentary system, I find calling it a democracy, like most tend to do, is pretty ridiculous if we only get to participate in it for a few minutes every five years, and afterwards, whoever wins isn’t held to account when they end up failing in their duty to represent the people who elect them.

Housing is an example of property given freely in Socialist states such as the USSR and PRC.

Hell, if even North Korea can do it, why can’t we?

It may be nice having rights like that, but if you can’t even exercise them, what’s the point to begin with if your material conditions remain untouched?

Redderthanmisty ,

We live under capitalism. When profits are threatened, human rights go out the window.

Redderthanmisty ,

What’s so brutal about him exactly?

The purges weren’t just stalin going around shooting his opposition, they were a series of anti-corruption trials aimed at removing revisionists in power who were intent on seeing a return of capitalism. It was only in the worst cases, people who had deliberately committed espionage or sabotage, who were sentenced to death. Everyone else however, was largely either just barred from political life, or sent to jail, or not prosecuted at all as they hadn’t done anything yet.

Redderthanmisty ,

AMD’s your friend now, but they’re only undercutting NVIDIA like this to get on top of the market. Once they’ve done that, it will be NVIDIA doing the undercutting, and AMD will be the one clamping down and exploiting their position.

It has happened time and time again.

Don’t simp for corporations. They’ll never return the favour.

Redderthanmisty ,

Still a thing for some enterprise users… and the elderly.

Redderthanmisty ,

On desktop, Firefox + ublock origin is my goto.

On Mobile, the best I can really do is Youtube revanced and PiHole, but that doesn’t cover everything, and often breaks other functionality.

Redderthanmisty ,

I believe uBlock Origin has very good adblocker blocker blocking capabilities.

Redderthanmisty ,

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Redderthanmisty ,

I chose to use the copypasta because it does an excellent job at answering the question asked, ‘What is Linux?’.

The answer being that it is but one part of a complete OS, rather than the OS itself, and that if he chooses, he may indeed be able to incorporate the kernel into his own OS project.

Nobody said you have to use GNU, just that it’s by far the most common form in which a Linux-based operating system takes.

Redderthanmisty ,

Because reality uses Raytracing instead of Screen-space reflections!

Redderthanmisty ,

Only in america can you do whatever the fuck you like to someone because they cant afford legal defence.

Redderthanmisty ,

I named America in particular for its infamous promenance of SLAPP suits.

Redderthanmisty ,

Its 3am, and I’m on a 12hr overnight work shift.

Are there any good apps for texting on a computer?

I’ve tried Google’s Messages for Web, Microsoft’s Phone Link, and KDE’s Connect. They all seem to have the same problem: they lose connection constantly and have to be unpaired and re-paired. Is this a problem inherent to the way that Android works? Has anyone managed to solve it, or is there a setting to fix it?...

Redderthanmisty ,

So the soviet union had a single famine 8 years after it was formed, compared to the hundereds before, in the middle of a great depression and complete isolation on the international stage, and you condemn the rest of its existence as being ‘plagued by starvation and hunger’?

P.s Heres a link to a declassified CIA document stating that compared to the average US diet, the soviets ate approximately the same amount of food, and had a more nutritious diet overall.
