Never heard it called something like this, but it seems like an interesting idea. I assume they’re going to expose the kids to a bunch of books and hopefully pique their interest?

PotentialProblem ,

Hah I kinda like the idea of tasting random foods from books. Sounds ridiculous, but who knows, might be fun!

PotentialProblem ,

Heh. The world is a small place. I live very near here! I had no idea they were doing this! I’ll check it out.

I had no idea there were other bellinglemmings! (That doesn’t have the same ring to it)

PotentialProblem ,

Much much better

PotentialProblem ,

Since everyone’s mentioned the standards.

I’ve really enjoyed playing Tails of Iron (metroidvania with a focus on learning bosses attacks) lately. For programming games, I really liked Shenzhen IO (You create hardware with something resembling an Assembly language and a printable manual) and Human Resources Machine (drag and drop assembly programming)

I also have a soft spot for anything from Ska Studios (I maed a game with zombies in it, salt and sanctuary, salt and sacrifice, dishwasher, Charlie murder, and a bunch of older games that are probably not playable anymore)

Also looks like everyone else forgot to mention the great game that is Undertale as well.

PotentialProblem ,

Thanks for the info! I had no idea this existed!

I’m old and haven’t grown out of video games and now enjoy playing them with my kids! Video games rule for all ages!

PotentialProblem ,

I’m really interested to see how they’re going to region lock this. Will it be where the device was sold? Does that comply with EU regulations? Will it be geographical location? If I move to the US, will it lock the side loaded apps? If I grab a VPN can I side load things?

PotentialProblem ,

Interesting thought! This wouldn’t work for iPads and iPhones with no sim (but use WiFi) though

PotentialProblem ,

Only the cellular iPads have the eSIM. The standard WiFi ones do not. Since iOS covers both of these devices, older models, and folks who choose not to have a carrier despite having the ability to do so, I don’t believe this would be a partial solution at best.

Apparently it’s called AI Shark now! Because it uses AI to cheat!

Cells Across the Body Talk to Each Other About Aging (www.quantamagazine.org)

Aging can seem like an unregulated process: As time marches along, our cells and bodies inevitably accumulate dings and dents that cause dysfunctions, failures and ultimately death. However, in 1993 a discovery upended that interpretation of events. Researchers found a mutation in a single gene that doubled a worm’s life span;...

Netflix considers adding in-app purchases and ads to games, report says (techcrunch.com)

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company has had discussions about how to make money from its games for months now, including in-app purchases, putting a price tag on more premium titles and placing ads on games that subscribers to its ad tier have access to. These methods are common (and effective) in the mobile gaming...

Left the house for a walk in the rain with the wife. Lots of mountain bikers were out!

Doesn’t Valve offer the ability to host files on their service? I mean I just assumed that was part of the package. I can’t even think of any changes coming to AWS that would necessitate this.

PotentialProblem ,

For anyone confused about the Netflix bit. If you’re subscribed to Netflix, they offer a bunch of free mobile games that you can download and play. This works pretty similar to Apple Arcade. If you log into Netflix on your phone you should see a row of games that you can play.

Meta Joins Google In Turning Its Back On The Open Web, And Embracing Unconstitutional Mandates That Pretend To ‘Protect The Children’ (www.techdirt.com)

Meta Joins Google In Turning Its Back On The Open Web, And Embracing Unconstitutional Mandates That Pretend To ‘Protect The Children’::A month ago we wrote about Google effectively “pulling up the ladder” on the open internet by embracing age verification mandates as part of a regulatory approach to child safety. As we...

That’s an awfully strange pathway to executive at Meta.

Awesome! I just discovered retroachievements for my newly created counter top arcade machine!

The voice actor for Leela (Katey Sagal) played Peggy Bundy in the tv show Married… with children, which was hugely popular in the 90s. The above picture was a very common scene from the tv show. Peggy with huge hair, sitting on the couch with her husband watching tv and eating junk food. So, it’s a fun reference to her previous work.

PotentialProblem ,

No worries! I always thought of a “joke” as something that was intended to make me laugh. When I first saw this, I laughed as I didn’t expect a reference to her old show. So I personally consider it reasonable to call it a joke. Either way, this all has made me want to go back and watch an episode or two of Married with children. Cheers!

PotentialProblem ,

I love it.

I always thought being able to recognize voices is a common skill? Is it not?

I’ve definitely unplugged it in a moment of panic and that worked.

Looking for game recommendations

I’m a casual gamer who’s been largely inactive for the past few decades, and so I’m looking for some some good game recommendations. I don’t mind if they’re old as long as they came out after 2003 (because that’s when graphics of many games really started improving), maybe between 2008-2019. I’m also quite a picky...

PotentialProblem , (edited )

CounterStrike 2 came out last Wednesday. Basically the same game as CSGO but with some quality of life and graphical updates. Might be worth taking a shot at getting back into it.

There’s some platforming but Hollow Knight is an excellent game if you enjoy metroidvania types.

If you have someone to play with you may want to give local couch games a try. I’m ignoring a few of your thematic dislikes because they aren’t really a critical part of most of these games.

Games like:

Lovers in a dangerous space time

Boomerangfu

It takes two

Untitled goose game (single player is also fun if you enjoy harassing people as a goose)

Unravel

Duck game

Portal 2 (single player is great)

Cup head (single player is also great)

PotentialProblem ,

I agree! I’ve never been able to play the newer patch because I have the switch but I’ve spent many hours playing this game with the family!

PotentialProblem ,

I felt the exact same way. Great style. The actors nailed it… the first act felt like it had a solid direction… and then they forgot where they were going for the rest of the movie.

Why was Barbie being in the real world an extreme crisis just for it to be no problem at the end of the movie?

The mother daughter relationship felt shallow and forced.

Why were the Barbies intelligent but also immediately brainwashed?

They could have cut Will Ferrell and the entire board by the end of the movie as they added virtually nothing to the plot except Will Ferrell jokes. Why did they even go to Barbieland? What did they accomplish? Why were they chasing them just to leave them alone? Did I miss major parts of this movie or something?

PotentialProblem ,

Who is staying with someone that doesn’t listen to them?

PotentialProblem ,

I don’t see a problem with it but there’s definitely a stigma associated with it. (At least in the US) I think folks who pay are seen as not being able to find it elsewhere which may make them appear as not desirable to other people which then may make your partner question if they’re making a bad choice. Unless you happen to be in an area that has well regulated sex workers, I imagine people might think that you’ve been exposed to STDs which may give you a perception of being “unclean”.

I don’t think you should have to lie when finding a partner… but I do think telling them this (at the beginning) may be problematic for you for a lot of people.

I’d love to see sex work well regulated, protected, and normalized in the US but I don’t think we’re there.

Looking for games with strong female leads for my daughter (even just to watch as I play). Came across this link, but they're a bit age-inappropriate. Any suggestions from the community? (gameranx.com)

Edit: Daughter is only 5 so she’s unlikely to play much but she watches me and as long as it’s not too violent, it should be fine

PotentialProblem ,

Haven’t played that particular Shantae game, but I found the series off putting to play in front of my kids due to the high amount of fan service. Seems like not what op might not be going for here.

I hate watching videos! So I asked some AI to provide a summary.

In this YouTube video titled “The Arcade Game that Crashes Itself for Anti-Piracy Reasons,” the speaker discusses the anti-piracy measures implemented in the arcade game Tempest. These measures include checksums used to verify the integrity of the code and copyright strings, as well as checks for genuine hardware. The speaker explains the checksum calculation process, provides examples of the code used, and discusses how the game detects genuine hardware by auditing random number generation in the POKEY chips. The purpose of these measures is to deter piracy and make it more challenging for hackers to modify the game. However, it is now easier to disable or delete these anti-piracy measures, although finding unmodified versions of the Tempest arcade cabinet remains challenging.”

Pretty interesting that they leveraged how the random number generation happened to determine if the hardware was authentic or not.

I had a lot of fun playing ZeeMud back in the day. Apparently it’s still running, but the last time I checked it was mostly a graveyard. I tried to get back on and play a bit… but it feels depressing… like going back to your old home that’s now abandoned…
