Linux distro for selfhosting server

So I have been running a fair amount of selfhosted services over the last decade or so. I have always been running this on a Ubuntu LTS distribution running on a intel NUC machine. Most, if not all of my services run in a docker container, and using a docker compose file that brings everything up. The server is headless. I...

Potajito ,

Omv, that is debian with a Web interface basically

Potajito ,

Also you don’t need that on arch /endevour. There are old nvidia drivers on the aur (I’m in the same situation than you and use those)

Anyone been daily driving Bazzite?

Been keeping a keen eye on Bazzite as it seems like a good distro for people like myself who mainly use the desktop pc to play games on. But it doesn’t seem like a “typical” distro for a daily driver? How does Bazzite for example differ from Nobara which is another gaming-oriented distro? I’m just curious as I keep...

Potajito ,

I use endevour on my main PC but bazzite in the laptop, which I barely use, so I wanted something that didn’t mind not updating for a month and be fine, and bazzite nails that. I use distrobox for terminal things and vpn software for work is layered. No issues so far and very tempted to run it in my main PC, probably would do that if when arch breaks.

Potajito ,

Yeah no issues for me. Just ran the script to upgrade and reboot. All plugins are also working.

My client of choice! Nice!

Potajito ,

I’d say distrobox is the easiest and safest way to do that.

Hardware security key options?

I've been thinking about getting a hardware security key and have heard of yubikey before; but I want to see what my options are and if they are worth it in your opinion.
My current setup is a local KeePassXC database (that I sync between my PC and phone and also acts as TOTP authenticator app), I know that KeePass supports hardware keys for unlocking the database.

I am personally still of the belief that passwords are the safest when done right; but 2FA/MFA can greatly increase security on top of that (again, if done right).
The key work work together with already existing passwords, not replace them.

As I use linux as my primary OS I do expect it to support it and anything that doesn't I will have to pass on.

PS: what are the things I need to know about these hardware keys that's not being talked about too much, I am very much delving into new territory and want to make sure I'm properly educated before I delve in.

@linux @technology @technology @privacy

Potajito ,

I use a yubikey (couldn’t chose, it’s from work) and I have no issues with it working out of the box (endevour os). I just touch the “button” and it “types” the key.

Potajito ,

Feishin for me and occasionally strawberry

Potajito ,

If you are in the fedora mood, try nobara os. It’s fedora but with a spin on gaming, patches and some gui tools also. You can also try an inmutable distro like bazzite, which is also fedora and also focused on gaming. My advise would be to try a couple of things now that your system is clean and stick with whatever you like best.

Potajito ,

Using heroic to play avatar. Just add uplay as a game and download anything there.

Potajito ,

Probably the web app works better than the native app. Also, try the flatpak if you still prefer native, it’s better than what’s on the repos imo.

Potajito ,

Endevour os for me. No issues on kde nvidia and wayland, pretty straightforward installation. If I were you I’d do some distro hopping in the new PC. I’d try one of those ublue images, then nobara then endevour and see what you prefer.

Potajito ,

Personally I haven’t had that issue. I had lots of issues with latest 545 but downgraded to 535 and it’s all good so far.

Potajito ,

Yeah, I also gave garuda a try but it was too messy for my taste, like I had to spend time un-costumizing kde because I just wanted vanilla plasma.

Potajito ,

I don’t think an audio distro is needed nowadays. I use endevour os, with a zen kernel or real time one (trivial to set up, just install one package) and used this tool to fine tune the setup codeberg.org/rtcqs/rtcqsThen it’s pipewire, reaper, yabridge and not much else.

Potajito ,

I use teams for Linux, and it has notifications. I used teams Pwa on Firefox before and that also had notifications.

Potajito ,

For me it would be nobara or endevour os. Garuda is too messy imo. I run endeavour, but I don’t know how much gaming is possible on a nuc.

Potajito ,

Another one for the endevour os team. Not looking to distro hop anytime soon.

Potajito ,

The 545 drivers are very buggy, at least for me. I downgraded to 535,hopefully we get an usable 545 soon. Also, if you feel like it you can report the issue in the nvidia forums, it might get some visibility there.

Potajito ,

It’s about to ask you if you have any games in your phone.

Potajito ,

All my windows vst work great and with pretty much no configuration with yabridge. I think some heavy drm’ed vsts are a bit more problematic but most (all in my case) work.

Heroic Games Launcher freezes every single time I try choose something from the file chooser

I am trying to figure out how to fix some issues I have been having with heroic games launcher, every-time I have to use the files chooser for example setting a wine prefix or selecting an executable the entire app freezes. I am not totally sure how to fix this.

Potajito ,

What’s your DE? You can select your prefered file picker with an env flag. I’m in kde and somehow it defaults to gnome picker by default. Maybe it’s the same for you and you don’t have the gnome packages and it hangs? You can also run heroic from the console and see if it outputs any useful info when hanging.

Distro Picking

Hi! You may be sick of these posts by now, but I have been having a very hard time selecting between three distros; that being OpenSUSE, Fedora, and Linux Mint. I have tried linux in the past, I did debian with cinnamon and ran into some issues, so I ended up sheepishly reinstalling windows and getting AME10. I want to give it...

Potajito ,

Give nobara a try. It’s fedora with focus on gaming. Mint is always a good option. Personally I use endeavour os, pretty straight forward to install but maybe a bit too barebones if you don’t know what you need yet.

Potajito ,

Not a fan at all of apple, but isn’t the shift to arm not a “safe” movement at all? Like, they are breaking basically all the ecosystem of apps, legacy, etc… Also, from the outside, it looks like it went well? Sincerely asking, as I don’t know.

Potajito ,

I use endeavour os. Is arch made easy, while still being arch. It fills your needs, you can install any DE you like (kde myself) and a zen kernel with basically one command line. Also for nvidia if you go that way you just do “nvidia-inst” and are good to go. Another nice one that checks those boxes is nobara, a fedora spin focused on gaming.

Potajito ,

Id say nobara if you game, fedora if you don’t. Or just nobara as its fedora with a couple of things on top.

Potajito ,

Remmina or krdc work fine for me. Also parsec (no hosting there though). Oh if hosting, I’m not sure, but moonlight/sunshine work fine for me, even if it’s not the usual desktop sharing app.

Potajito ,

Endevour OS, 100%. Is Arch but without the hassle. I did the same as you, Manjaro then Endevour. Couldn’t be happier. Also we have similar hardware (nvidia 3080) and kde+wayland is working really good here. If you would like to try something else, Nobara is great, based on fedora but with some gaming patches.

Potajito , (edited )

Yeah. Well I have 2 + tv. I get some flicker on some xwayland apps, but right now my only remaining xwayland app is Reaper, afaik, at least the only one that flickers. No flicker on native wayland apps. Also, this workaround is worth at least trying to get rid of visual artifacts in kde:

  • Search in krunner or similar for “Plasma renderer”, under “rendering loop” select “Threaded”. Then reboot, not relog, reboot.
Potajito ,

I actually like that that thing from manjaro and use it from time to time in endevour, I think is called “paman”.

Potajito ,

Nice! It has fixed some issues for some friends (personally I didn’t had bad ones and this did nothing for me). Also I updated the workaround, forgot the reboot part.

Potajito ,

Came to say the same. Endeavour if you are into bleeding edge, nobara if not.

Potajito ,

Plugins should be easy to use and pretty painless thanks to yabridge. Also just running reaper fully on wine is fine option with a ñn asio bridge to JACK. I tried it once just to play around and was impressed at how easy and performant was. Shame in the maschine hardware, this is the only thing I could find about that github.com/wrl/maschine.rsI also got triggered by win11 to switch to Linux half a year ago and couldn’t be happier on endeavour os, no problems so far on the music production side, even with heavy drm’d plug ins. Work flow s also much better, as I can run higher sample count with lower latency than windows thanks to pipewire.

Potajito ,

Check gourou! Also if you use arch there is a bin there on the aur for knock.

Potajito ,

Endeavour is great. Running that too. I sometimes think of distro hopping (nobara, cachyos?) but endeavour just checks all the boxes for me.
