One of the most tired genres of academic posting is complaining about your students. A lot of it is mean-spirited (how dare these kids not treat my exact passion with the seriousness I did!), but a lot of it is also just fucking lazy. Congrats, as a trained expert in your field you managed to nitpick a freshman to death, or discovered that they (gasp) skipped a reading.

@seanbala @Zeb_Larson @academicchatter Yeah it’s a little bananapants to me that you don’t have a research track and a pedagogy track. There are a lot of researchers who hate teaching and a lot of good teachers who just go through tie motions of “publish or perish.”

So while I was up in Canada scouting out safe places to wisk my family to n case white people start acting up again this fall, I missed Fani Willis testifying. A friend sent me a link to the full testimony while I was in the airport Sunday. Just watched it last night...so I am compelled to point out...again...the hypocrisy of white America and how they still don't know a damn thing about how black folks live. A thread...1/4?

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@fulanigirl @blackmastodon White Americans are so weird about cash or having more than a certain amount of cash on you (full disclosure, I am white). They act like there is no legit reason to have a lot of cash.

I keep having to tell other white people that hey, there are many people in the world who live very differently than you do.

@actuallyautistic

Since my diagnosis, I have realized the main reason I never considered that I was autistic is because every depiction of autism I ever saw was so far from my own experience. But if anyone wants to understand it better, seek out books written by autistic people instead of those discussing it from the outside.

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@unabogie @actuallyautistic This is also a thing for people with ADHD and it made the condition much more difficult to cope with (for me) until pretty recently even though I was diagnosed early.

Autism and ADHD are often framed in terms of how they make you mismatch with the neurotypical world or make you annoying to neurotypical people. This does not help you, the neurodiverse weirdo, with coping and living your life that much.

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@unabogie @actuallyautistic What helps more is: how does this thing affect how you encounter and process the world?

Like how does it affect your working memory? Your emotional regulation? Your ability to prioritize things? Your ability to sense time passing or estimate how long something will take? Whether something exists in your awareness at all?

This is all you stuff.

/2

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@unabogie @actuallyautistic Then you can start figuring out what you really need, what your limitations actually are, how to organize your stuff and your life so you can actually take care of yourself and shepherd your energy, set your boundaries, etc.

It might have to do with how you present yourself to neurotypical people sometimes, but mostly it doesn’t.

@shreddy_scientist Trying to water it down so they can vote for it without upsetting Israel? That’s not going to work. There is no way to have this both ways. Either everyone will feel the same as they do already or everyone will be upset.

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@shreddy_scientist If they can secure funding for Ukraine they can pull aid for Israel (Israel doesn’t actually need it, a lot of people don’t understand that) and then transfer that business to Ukraine. It will keep Lockheed et. al. happy, and get them invested in lobbying to set up a permanent stream of aid/military support to European countries bordering Russia.

Oh great someone posted a thing about how “ADHD and autism are only disorders in a capitalist society” again.

Speaking as a person with I say unto you all that this take needs to die. I can’t speak for people but ADHD is difficult in a lot of ways that would still be difficult in, like, a post-scarcity space socialist paradise or whatever!

@cynaq @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I had seen something a while ago about pregnant people’s exposure to air pollution being linked to higher rates of autism in their children too. And yet we are fine having gas-powered cars and coal- or shale gas-burning plants everywhere, in spite of those air pollution effects and other more firmly established and definitely harmful health effects.

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@cynaq @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd There is a lot of debate over whether ASD is a bad thing to have in and of itself, how much of the challenge of ASD is caused by having it vs. living in a world that is hostile to it, etc.

But this kind of ignores the fact that there are presentations of ASD where people living with it have some real problems where they can’t live independently and there are also some common physical comorbidities that may have the same root cause.

/1

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@cynaq @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd There’s a lot we don’t understand and IMO being hung up on getting rid of micro plastic pollution as a way to eliminate autism in the human population is the wrong take.

The fact that it has an effect on human physical and neurological development is absolutely something we should be alarmed about.

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@cynaq @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I have ADHD and I have been in the same therapy groups with y’all and had most of the same things said about me, I am not pulling this out of nowhere.

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@cynaq @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd So this is a “journalists who don’t know science attempt science journalism” thing, because we don’t have journalists do dedicated beats anymore . :/

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@Vincarsi @guidedbywire @cynaq @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd It’s why I have learned to gently but firmly set boundaries and be insistent about what I need (related to things like my schedule, having clear instructions and expectations, etc.) so I am not left in a crisis and begging. I know I have to be proactive and not let people get anywhere close to draining my batteries because, well.

Of course, it took me a while to get to the point where I could do this.

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@Vincarsi @guidedbywire @cynaq @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I don’t talk about burnout or whatever I just say “I’m not going to be able to stay after this time, I can do this but not that, yes I do this and I am going to keep doing this.” And I don’t volunteer any explanations about why or apologize about it because that just gives people an opportunity to argue with me.

I've just been told to “advise ahead of time” because I had meltdowns.

I guess “normal” (pfft) people file sick leave because they knew they'll have a fever ahead of time.

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@youronlyone @autistics @actuallyautistic Oh and when you’re like “this situation is stressful for me and I need to go somewhere quiet so I won’t have a meltdown” they tell you to just grin and bear it right?

MisuseCase ,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@youronlyone @autistics @actuallyautistic This is why at this point in my life I’m very firm about my working conditions and accommodations and unless it’s strictly necessary I don’t even ask for permission, I just do it my way. I am just like “I can’t do it now, I need to do this first” or “hold on please” and I don’t even make reference to whatever condition I have, I am just firm about it.

I recognize that not everyone is in a position to do this.
