Just saw an interesting post by someone missing the simplicity of their childhood. I know that most people wear rose coloured glasses when they’re feeling nostalgic, but I wonder how many autistic people read such posts & think, “No way!”?

I had lots of fun & interesting times during my childhood & adolescence, but there was also so much complexity, confusion & distress. Learning to mask made it easier. I could at least pretend to understand what was going on & therefore attract less negative attention.

@Susan60 @actuallyautistic

my childhood was a mixture of me excelling at reading and writing while always getting in trouble for talking the same prolific way I wrote and read. Very confusing!

I do have a formal diagnosis, but let me say that anyone who spends the time to dig into this rabbit hole the way you have is almost surely also autistic.

When you're assessed as an adult, you've likely acquired so many masking skills that all they can really do is ask us how we feel. And that will very likely match our "dossiers"

Any recommendations for good SFF/speculative books that are written first person? My wife and I are really enjoying reading the Murderbot books aloud to each other. Part of that is the great writing and sparkling personality of the main character, but I think part of it is also the different vibe of first person writing, where the narrator is telling a story to the audience. I'd like to find more books like that.

Not sure it's this is the genre you're looking for but The Man Who Folded Himself is a classic.

An interesting question for my @actuallyautistic neurokin.

What was your first special interest?

The very first one you can remember as a kid.

Mine is/was cats, starting at like age 3 I think. Absolutely enamored with them (and still am) and wanted to know everything about them (and still do). 😻

Since my diagnosis, I have realized the main reason I never considered that I was autistic is because every depiction of autism I ever saw was so far from my own experience. But if anyone wants to understand it better, seek out books written by autistic people instead of those discussing it from the outside.

unabogie OP ,

@actuallyautistic

The main reason is that what shows up on the outside varies wildly depending on the amount of energy a person can expend in an effort to blend in. What makes a person autistic is how their brain processes the world. What makes a person seem autistic is how much of their outward behavior conflicts with social norms. They are not the same and do not always correlate.

@actuallyautistic If a person tells you they are autistic and that surprises you, don't say that "we're all a little autistic!" or "you don't seem autistic to me!"

If you are surprised, it's likely because your understanding of autism is lacking. The best way to learn is to ask your friends and do your best to listen. It's a fascinating topic!

That's great. I also like the mental model of a sound mixer. Everyone has the same sliders and knobs but we vary wildly in how much we have each slider turned up and how the frequency dials are turned. If the Intense World Theory is correct, ours are just turnt up way more. And so no two autistic people are the same, and not everyone has these frequencies on their mixing board at all.

@actuallyautistic A lot of people on here talk about meltdowns as a regular, visible thing. I know we're all different, but this is so far from my experience I started feeling a little impostery. I have had melts before, ie I've completely lost control and either: fled to save myself and others from me, or sort of left my body like a blackout (while still walking/talking) ... 1/

I'm the same way, and it's the main reason I was undiagnosed for so long.

Editing dog genes to "create autistic dogs"

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37848710/

One thing to note is that their conclusions are not that these dogs are actually autistic, just that they think they've proven that creating "mutant" dogs is a good way to study human brain types and mental "disorders" like the autism "disease."

unabogie OP ,
@unabogie@urbanists.social avatar

@actuallyautistics

So aside from the immoral nature of abusing dogs in this way, it's not even clear what they've claimed to have done. They are using CRISPR to edit genes of these poor animals and then using their lowered trust of humans as proof of their supposed "autism" and "anxiety"

unabogie OP ,
@unabogie@urbanists.social avatar

@actuallyautistics

This is just junk science, and the fact that it's only being picked up by Chinese tabloids is just further proof of that.

I rarely support animal testing, but in this case it's just completely abhorrent and serves no ethical or medical purpose, and the goal of this whole study is to prove that dogs make good candidates for further torture
