So it is a conflict and not a “special military operation”?

How is it possible to partition a HDD without corrupting its contents?

A moment ago I unmounted my 1TB HDD with 400GB of content and I partition it into two different partitions, obviously keeping the space that was already occupied. I did because I don’t care if the content get corrupted, but after I did it everything is still working perfectly, when I thought everything would be corrupted....

Mindlight ,

Essentially it only moves the borders of the partitions and “repairs” the filesystem inside each affected partition.

If there is data in an area inside the partion you are manipulating gparted has to move the data to an area inside the partition that is unaffected or move it to the new parts of the partition. This can take a long time even if modern PCs easily move 100MB/s

Also, even if gparted is mature software and the devs probably have implemented a lot of security measures you should always backup your data before manipulating the partitions. Especially when you’re playing around with filesystems that aren’t native like NTFS or more complicated filesystems like ZFS. I know people often nag about this but trust me… Blow 2TB of your data and you really really regret not spending 10 minutes backing up the essentials.

I’ve been using gparted for as long as I can remember and only once or twice has it caused dats loss. Since I’m very old school (started playing with PCs when 386DX 16MHz was fairly hot and RLL disks were a thing) and nerdy I was able to use data rescue software that looked for filesystems over the whole disk and guessed where partition borders should be.

Avoid this type of anxiety by backing up all data or at least backing up the data you can’t live without.

Also, if you have a spare disk, it’s faster and much safer to partition the spare one and just clone each partition. Sometimes it’s even faster to clone the disk this way and then clone it back.

As I understand it it’s the anti-cheat that is the problem. If this is the only problem there is essentially only two possible ways to get Fortnite running in Linux:

  1. Get Epic to support Linux
  2. Crack the anti-cheat.

Since a major part of anti-cheat systems is preventing people circumventing it I would say that the easiest path would be getting epic to support Linux. One valid argument would be to play Fortnite on Steamdeck .

Putin dismisses importance of U.S.-supplied weapons to Ukraine (www.nbcnews.com)

A Russian missile attack killed two civilians in an apartment building in southern Ukraine on Wednesday, local authorities said, as President Vladimir Putin dismissed the importance of a new U.S.-supplied weapon that Kyiv used to execute one of the most damaging attacks on the Kremlin’s air assets since the start of the war....

Mindlight ,

I’m pretty sure it has been proved that the weapons supplied by the US dismisses the importance of Putin.

While high speed trains reach speeds up to around 350kmh ordinary trains reach speeds up to around 250kmh.

So while high speed trains can go about 50% faster than ordinary trains the price tag for building and maintaining is many times more expensive compared to ordinary railway.

So let’s start maintaining the railways we have and build more. Making sure that it’s possible to go from point A to point B safely and in time

Then we start building high speed railways, connecting major cities.

Slovakia will ending their support for Ukraine isn’t a problem as to what will happen when the US and EU stops supporting Slovakia.

The amount of money the US and EU has poured into Slovakia the last ten twenty years is far from insignificant.

If Slovakia decides to stop believing in Europe then Europe will stop believing in Slovakia.

Cyberpunk runs 30% faster on linux than on windows 11 (m.youtube.com)

The YouTube channel “Maximum Fury” conducted a technical test of the new Cyberpunk add-on called “Phantom Liberty” on an older AMD hardware system, testing it separately on Linux and Windows 11. The Linux system, specifically the Fedora distribution called Nobara, performed significantly better, delivering 31% more...

It’s a well known fact that every second major release of Windows is crap.

  • Windows 95 was not the best.
  • Windows 95OSR2 was the one you wanted.
  • Windows 98 sucked.
  • Windows 98 2nd ed. worked as the former should have.
  • Windows 2000 was great but had no support for running games.
  • XP solved that and made people leave Windows 98 (I deliberately left out the clusterf… Windows ME.).
  • Windows Vista sucked balls.
  • Windows 7 was what Vista should have been.
  • Windows 8? Metro on phones, yes! On desktop? No no no.
  • Windows 10 got Microsoft back on track again.

I thought the new upgrade scheme (2 editions per year) Microsoft introduced with Windows 10 would be like “every second release will suck” but it started to look like Microsoft were able to break the curse…

…and then Windows 11 happened.

Mindlight ,

W2k was awesome. Great stability. However, the legacy from Windows NT meant that applications had no direct access to hardware which games of that time required.

That was a showstopper for most users outside the enterprise world.

Microsoft cuts ties with the Surface Duo after just 2 Android version updates (www.windowscentral.com)

Microsoft is done supporting the original Surface Duo, three years after it first launched on September 10. The company has stated from the very start that the Surface Duo would receive just three years of OS updates, meaning today is the last day that Microsoft has to stay true to its word....

Mindlight ,

Yup. Just like my Nexus 10. Even though no one loves it I still do…

Mindlight ,

We do but Illuminati made sure it’s only available to about 1% of the population…

Mindlight ,

I second this. Here in Sweden we used to have a movie site where they applied some magic to the calculation and presented how you would rate a movie on a scale 1-5 and they were always correct within ±1 point. So fx a 3 could be either 2, 3 or 4 etc etc. While the site still exists it has seen better days so RT had been my go-to site for movie scores and reviews.

What statement do you mean is untrue?

Mindlight ,

It seems that you think something can’t be bad if there’s something else that’s worse.

You bringing up things that doesn’t even share a similar context is either plain stupid or very deliberate.

I’m voting for the latter.

By the way… You do agree that the Russian aggression against Ukraine is caused by Russia attacking Ukraine and that Russia have a deliberate strategy of killing civilians in Ukraine, right?

Mindlight ,

Wikipedia:

I got curious about the last statement in the article about war crimes and wanted to find information on what war crimes the division was responsible for.

According to Wikipedia there has been numerous investigations which all (as I understood it) has been unsuccessful in finding hard evidence.

Now, I’m not defending Nazis and I’m not saying this division was nice in any way or not guilty of war crimes. I’m just concluding that most things in life are not just black or white.

Fukushima wastewater released into the ocean, China bans all Japanese seafood (www.reuters.com)

Japan started releasing treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, a polarising move that prompted China to announce an immediate blanket ban on all aquatic products from Japan....

There is a risk I’m wrong but… I’m pretty sure that if something is released into the Japanese part of the Pacific ocean it’s not contained within the Japanese borders…

That’s because you have been doing some criminal shit and I promise you that she’s not the only one who wants you behind bars.

This.

And to add to it. If you were making 10 million dollar and someone approached and said that they could make it so that you keep 1 million in taxes if you pay them 100 thousand you would most likely be one of the ones doing it.

If you make enough money you can afford hiring people to find new ways to keep your expenses down. Tax is an expense as any other to many rich people.

What do you propose the government should limit/stop spending on to reach over 0.5% of the real yearly earnings of Gates, Musk, Bezos, the Waltons and all their billionaire friends?

(Note that I’m not even asking about if the actual real yearly earnings of millionaires.)

Mindlight , (edited )

What I know or don’t know is irrelevant . You came with unsubstantiated claims and I asked you to own up to your claims.

So let’s try it once more: what exactly do you suggest the government stop spending money on each year to reach savings equivalent of 0.5% of the real yearly earnings of Gates, Musk, Bezos, Waltons and their friends?

In Sweden, where I live, the equivalent of FDA (I guess) says that firm cheese is fine too eat as long as you cut off 2 cm from the moldy part.

I second number 4.

Since Microsoft does what Microsoft does you might run into trouble with not being able to boot Linux after the first time you bored into windows again. It’s not a biggie. Google solutions and you will be able to restore Grub easily.

I run dual boot and I’ve been doing it for over 10 years. Best of two worlds.

Mindlight ,

Grub is a bootloader. Instead of starting Windows immediately when you turn on the computer there is a program called grub that is started. In grub you get a menu where you can choose what OS, Windows or Linux, you want to start.

Now, Microsoft doesn’t like that because in their world there is only one OS so why would you even need to choose? 😉 So what Windows does sometimes is to remove Grub and make sure the computer starts directly into windows.

If this happens you just Google and you will find how to boot up on your Linux DVD/USBstick and run some commands to get the menu (Grub) back.

Mindlight , (edited )

Remember that when you Google solutions, check the date on the results you get. A posted solution on Reddit from 2018 might not be adequate for your situation.

What if Teslas own self driving software causes an accident/death?

Mindlight ,

Does Teslas still have a disclaimer that the self-driving features aren’t self-driving and that if the driver is using the self driving features and there is an accident Tesla can’t be held liable?

Mindlight ,

So it doesn’t matter whatever you’re using Teslas or a 3rd party software since you, as the driver, are responsible for the outcome.

Mindlight ,

So you’re claiming the software in Teslas have been tested and approved by the authorities?

Mindlight ,

I did read it. They opened an investigation like 5 years after The Model S was released and people have died. Now, 6 years after that, something actually happens. 6 years of more accidents.

The same could be done with 3rd party software so there’s no difference and it’s not the same as the car system being regularly inspected.

Mindlight ,

It seems you are trying to prove that “random software” is unsafe compared to Tesla’s when you actually have no idea how safe Tesla’s is.

There are multiple companies and universities developing software for self driving cars.

What if the “random software” was developed and maintained by Volvo, would you still call it “random software”? Would you still claim that Tesla’s software is more safe to use?

Mindlight ,

So you’re not fine with Tesla’s even?

Since there is no such testing you’re talking about.

Mindlight ,

…or maybe made a documentary about it 20 years ago…

“There’s no chance NATO’ll grant Ukraine membership. It is right next to Russia, and NATO is scared to upset Putin.”

While I agree that the chances for Ukraina bring admitted is next to slim I definitively don’t agree with your opinion on why it will not happen.

You do understand that Ukraine is literally the only democracy in Europe that shares borders with Russia and is not a member of NATO?

When I started playing around with Linux 25 years ago Debian and APT was a small revolution in how good it worked out of the box.

I tried to get into Red hat and SUSE and I always wanted up in trouble even before I got any Windows manager up and running. Don’t get me started on RPM and dependency hell

Debian just worked. I had stuff up n running BEFORE I had to go down the rabbit hole to understand how all things was connected.

For a beginner that was a game changer.

I don’t get what’s controversial about Netflix making sure their customers keep their promises.

The good thing about Netflix is that they don’t lock you in for 12-24 months. So you’re free to cancel whenever you want. Compare that to the agreement you have with your internet provider.

With that said, you who cancelled Netflix because of this change, what streaming service did you move to that didn’t enforce on account per household?

Mindlight ,

If you read the agreement you agreed ro it clearly says they are allowed to change the terms and you are free to cancel the subscription.

They didn’t break any promises.

Mindlight ,

Ok. Then you probably didn’t need Netflix anyways?

Mindlight ,

“…but I didn’t bother to make my own account when I got booted from my parents’ account. Because Netflix doesn’t make enough good stuff to justify it anymore and they cancel everything too quickly.”

So you actually don’t care about Netflix enforcing the agreement since you don’t care about Netflix.

I agree on Netflix not making much good stuff. A lot of the Netflix movies people are praising today would never have passed the pre production phase in the 90’s or 00’s. It just seems like there has been a general decline in quality the last 10 years and people had just gotten used to it and get happy for whatever is better than the latest upcoming remake/sequel.

I also agree about Apple producing quality. In my opinion they’re the only streaming service that doesn’t fill their catalogue with bullshit just to look bigger.

All other services not requiring one account per household is simply not true. Netflix is probably the only service actively stating that account sharing is okay. For example, Disney Plus terms states that you are not allowed to share your credentials to a 3rd party.

The reason that some services are more lenient on this issue is that they are still focusing on gaining market shares. Next phase is starting to focus on how to getting profitable.

Netflix might be the first one cracking down on this but they are definitively not the last one doing that.

If the streaming services don’t make sure it’s enforced the copyright holders will.

Mindlight ,

As I understood it you cancelled Netflix and didn’t sign up for a substitute.

Mindlight ,

Then you’re not in the target group for Netflix. (Neither am I since I never stopped using my Kodi setup).

Piracy was the only thing that brought us Spotify, Netflix and affordable games on PC.

Mindlight ,

The reason I chose the word “promise” is because people often, especially in discussions regarding Netflix latest nice, tend to forget/ don’t understand what it means when you sign an agreement.

I personally don’t care if people get angry if Netflix hold them liable to the agreement they signed out if they get angry after getting a parking fine.

Regarding the ToS, do you mean that Netflix never made a change in the terms regarding sharing account before enforcing the new stuff or do you agree that the terms now regulate who you can and who you can’t share your account with?

Mindlight ,

I have never claimed that Netflix is a good company or that they offer a good product.

All I’m saying it’s that Netflix are free to change the terms and the customers are free to stop paying if they don’t like the terms.

Mindlight ,

So what do you think is the reason why people are mad at Netflix? Is it because Netflix didn’t stop some customers from not following the agreement earlier or is it because the customers can’t continue to not following the agreement?

Mindlight ,
