We own 3 rental properties. 1 we bought from my wife’s grandpa because he was about to sell it to one of those “we buy houses scams” and we’re currently renting it out for about 60% the rent on comparable properties…tenets have been great except for a few months several years ago when dude got hurt and couldn’t work. We worked with them through that, and they haven’t been late since or caused any damage. The other 2 are friends/family that couldn’t afford a place on their own, so we bought it, and they rented it. We generally lose money on those 2. I grew up poor, and we had to move every year or two when we got evicted or when we were actually doing things right, but the landlord wasn’t paying the bank.

There’s a lot of scummy landlords out there, but there’s several of us who aren’t. We charge just enough to cover mortgage and maintenance. The payoff comes after we retire. We can sell the homes (hopefully to the tenets if they’re interested) or supplement our retirements.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

It’s not necessarily about feeling defensive. It’s about trying to stay grounded. I’ve lived in rentals before, but I don’t now, so my experience may not match the experience of renting today. There’s nothing wrong with asking others for input about your own place in society or how you can be better.

The Guardian US: Trump cancels North Carolina rally due to storm in first public address since New York trial (www.theguardian.com)

Trump follows with postings about how the beautiful mother nature whom he’s always respected has joined the witch trial by continuing to keep him from speaking. But at least he could catch up on some rest.

Huh, I’d heard somewhere he like (golden) showers…

Jimmyeatsausage ,

And it literally can be as simple as you picking 2 outfits that are appropriate for the day and letting them pick which one to wear. That’s not to imply anything about the OP or the ER story…obvs every individual case is unique, and I’m not implying that picking your own underwear can cure psychopathy.

But, things as simple as this can cure neurotypical cases of children acting out if that behavior is rooted in a need for self-determination or control.

Nobody wants to think of the guy in the latest drone video as the father of a 6 month old who’ll never know their father because he was drafted by an authoritarian government to fight in an unjust war. I’m sure a lot of those Russians are full on board with the war, but I’m certain a lot of them aren’t, too. Same reason people have such a hard time empathizing with both the Oct 7 victims of Hamas and the Palestinian people. It’s horror enough thinking of these things as good vs. evil…it’s so much worse when you see all the grey. As an American, I can’t help but see Israel making the same mistakes we did after Sept 11. I’m sure they feel the same rage and fear I felt then, and I imagine it’s making them blindly lust for revenge just like I did. It’s all just so fucking bleak how easy it is to convince ourselves that our enemies aren’t people.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Casualties are how most militaries think about losses. A soldier in a hospital is just as bad as a dead soldier from the perspective of force management… Neither can participate in combat or act as a reserve. In fact, a wounded soldier is ofter worse than a dead one during combat because there’s likely 2-3 other soldiers trying to save them.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

If I had to guess, it’s likely a weirdly written local ordinance… maybe something that had good intent, like ensuring room for crosswalks, but it’s being applied in scenarios that don’t make sense or weren’t considered when the rule was written strictly for compliance reasons. It’s definitely something that varies by city/town.

We could have someone that helps more and does less evil.

Really? Who?

You “genocide joe” folks keep saying there’s a better choice, but nobody will give me a name, a website, a campaign address I can send money to, anything. Show the candidate that can literally win in 7 months. Otherwise, you’re asking me to put my family at additional risk for the payoff of helping exactly 0 people in Gaza… unless you define helping as Israel “finishing the job.”

Jimmyeatsausage ,

I actually voted for Warren in the primaries last cycle. As far as I know, she isn’t running this cycle and isn’t on the ballot in any states that have already passed the8r registration deadlines.

I know for a fact that 7 months isn’t long enough to run a presidential campaign because, again, you have to have filed to run usually a year in advance. Unless you’re suggesting that Warren is running the best write-in campaign in American history. I’m happy to help her, but I’m a little worried I haven’t heard a word about it from her or any PACs.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

If the bar for running a campaign is “knowing it’s hard to win the electoral college if you aren’t on the ballot” then yeah, I guess I’m qualified…but being so smart, I know there’s quite a bit more to it than that.

I think that campaigns start during or before the primary…you know, when the media starts talking about who’s gonna run and what their positions are…then all the commercials start running…that all feels pretty campaigny to me. So I can’t really comment on why you think the DNC doesn’t let folks campaign before the convention. Feels like that’d make voting in all those primaries a lot harder.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

We’ve seen 2 attempts to overthrow the federal government. 1 in the 1860s and 1 in 2020. Neither time was the government acting tyrannically. Neither time did it work. Neither time did guns help. Maybe guns aren’t the answer to that problem, either.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

I might change my position on the 2nd Amendment if you can show me that access to so many guns prevents a government from ever becoming tyrannical. So far, that access has only made society itself tyrannical and given the police all the excuse they needed to be able to use tanks, APCs, and other military equipment against us.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Eh, link there’ll blame their diarrhea after taco night on the Biden administration.

The US is the 2nd largest milk producer on the planet…and that’s only IF you count the EU as a single entity. Otherwise, it’s 1st. Also, the largest economy on the planet. Things that happen in America matter elsewhere.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Weird that this one isn’t filled with a bunch of instructions to be an unbiased raging white supremacist conspiracy theorist.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Well, we also can’t let communities discriminate like that…you say you’re “not saying you have to accept [them] in your community regardless of legal status” but I’m assuming you don’t feel loke people should be able to chase other types of minorities out of town if they don’t approve. That’s kinda the whole point of law - to set the rules for how we treat each other. I haven’t thought enough about this particular topic to know how I feel about it. I see the state’s interest in reducing incestuous births, and I’m definitely not ok with the state making reproductive choices for people more generally.

What’s really disgusting is that I bet the entire reason they’re even debating this is because they don’t want to allow any exemption from their abortion ban.

Yachts, on average, burn 20-50 gallons of fuel an hour.

Super yachts and mega yachts have fuel capacities of 10k-50k gallons and burn 100-500 gallons per hour.

Before I had a PEV, I would run through about 10 gallons a week. I had that car for 10 years, meaning I used less fuel in a decade than a mega yacht does in a day. I traveled around 130k miles on around 5200 gallons of gas and that car had pretty shit MPG of 25.

Cruising speed for yachts varies quite a bit, but assuming a speed of 50 mph means a super yacht gets between 0.5 and 0.1 MPG.

Then there’s the private jets, the 30k sq ft houses, and the fact that 80% of emissions can be tracked back to 57 atate-owned or private companies…none of which are owned or run by the poor or working class. All of that is only considering the western world and it’s definition of poor, the poorest 100 nations only account for around 3% of total emissions…so yes, its the rich people.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

0.1% of a billion dollars is still 10m. Since we’re on track to see our first trillionaires soon, I’d argue we need a 100% tax bracket as well. 0.1% of a trillion is 10 billion.

It’s got to be an absolutely wild experience going through life thinking there is no middle ground between inviting strangers (many of whom are dealing with addiction or untreated mental illness) to sleep with you and your children and putting spikes and bars on all publicly accessible places to make life harder for those suffering the most.

I’m guessing you love factory farming, animal abuse, migrant abuse, and child labor since you eat food?

Jimmyeatsausage ,

I am just applying your own logic to you. You eat vegetables that were almost certainly picked by underpaid Central Americans and wear clothes that were fabricated in sweat shops made from fabrics harvested by children. If you’re living on a reservation funded by a casino, you’re likely benefiting from the drug trade or human trafficking as well. I’m as responsible for colonization as you are for the tribes that decided to help with the colonization for short-term gain. I acknowledge the atrocities of my ancestors - my family was also on the wrong side of the civil war. I also acknowledge that, despite having 1st nation’s heritage, I don’t present as native so I enjoy all the continuing privilege of whiteness. We ALL need to acknowledge that we can’t help but participate in systemic injustice, even if we’re fighting against it.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

There are more liberal people, but they are usually concentrated in dense urban areas, which dilutes their power.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Well, we should be outraged. This is as bad as wearing a tan suit or eating different mustard!

I agree that home prices are unsustainable, and that’s not a good thing.

I don’t know that the increase in multigenerational housing is all bad, either. It does help with housing supply, which should lead to lower prices and less interest in corporate ownership. It’s also a way to increase housing density without changing zoning laws, and I can’t imagine the NIMBYs are gonna have a good argument against allowing this. Multigenerational housing could have a positive impact on the loneliness epidemic…if we’re really lucky, it may even lead to a decrease in radicalization by decreasing social isolation.

I know there’s lots of people who can’t stay with family or wouldn’t want to. We definitely need to get housing supply under control and this isn’t a situation that I would want anyone forced into…but it being more normalized and less stigmatized is, I think, a good thing.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

They’re actually reporting a much higher increase in anti-LGBTQ activities (141%) that antisemitism (30%), so I’m not convinced that’s the whole story here.

I agree that some of their ‘antisemitism’ was tied to support for the Palestinian people…but I also think it’s true white supremacist ideology (including christofascism) is on the rise even after accounting for their anti-palestinian bias.

Jimmyeatsausage ,
